DRR has just made a kick'ass release to DRR-NES, his Nintendo emulator for DOS, made in Quick Basic. First of all, this version should be fifty (50) times faster, due to memory handling optimization. Some mappers were also implemented (six mappers, actually) lot of CPU bugs were fixed. Quoting the author: "Most games run at 12-15 fps on my P166 with the exception of mapper #1 games that do about 1.5 fps because of constant bank switching. Demos go over 60 fps. ".

To prepare you for the upcoming Meka and BrSMS releases, I am releasing the first two SC-3000 roms. For those of you who don't know, the SC-3000 is Sega Computer. The first rom is the Sega Basic Level 3, in it's first european version, and the second one is a music composer program. Although both roms are for the first time publicly released, they were dumped about ten years ago (!) by the group Image/Helsinki/Finland. Thanks goes to Lasse (of the same group) for sending them to me.

Gary Henderson has updated SNES9x to version 1.18 for Linux, Solaris, and SunOS. Quoting directly from the page, new changes are as follows:

  • Implemented a sync-sound mode where sound data gets generated in sync with SPC700 instructions being executed. Finally the sound Williams Arcade classics can be heard. Also helps slight sound timing problems in many other games but doesn't fix Mortal Kombat 2 like I thought it would. :(
  • Added interpolated sound - gives low frequency sounds much more bass similar to a real SNES especially with the playback rate ramped up to 44KHz.
  • Added on-screen messages as various emulation options are toggled on and off using the in-game keys.
  • Fixed a PPU register read bug with the sprite register write position. Thanks to Takehiro TOMINAGA for the bug report.
  • Altered the auto-frame skip timing code to only wait and re-sync to the end of frame when frames haven't been skipped. Again thanks to Takehiro.
  • Speeded up the colour addition and subtraction code using ideas from Takehiro.
  • Linux and UNIX sound code now driven directly from signal timer handler rather than the timer handler just setting a flag which had to be polled in the main emulation code. Slightly faster execution.
  • Fixed the crash bug in the ZSNES Super FX asm code with Vortex - the game's polygons still aren't visible though.
  • Implemented bent-line increase and exponential decay and sustain volume envelopes - they should match, or at least be very similar to the real SNES sound DSP chip now.
  • It would seem ROMs can key on sound channels even if the channel hasn't been keyed-off, Pac-In-Time requires it. Changed code to allow it.
  • Quick mod to ZSNES Super FX code to get Winter Gold working - it was already working with the C Super FX code.
  • Added emulation of the extra 1/2 scan-line per frame on PAL and NTSC - should help improve music speed emulation.
  • Worked around the click sound heard when ROMs use 0 volume envelope attack rate.
  • Removed the 'check for IRQ already happened' H-IRQ position register setting code - it was causing problems for Ninja Warriors and was not required by F1 Grand Prix.
  • Fixed a bug in the new sound code - the sustain part of the attack-decay-sustain-release volume envelope was being skipped if the sustain level wasn't at 100%. The fix has helped some music notes from being cut off early in a few games.
  • Added fix to Pro Action Reply support (again). Thanks to Paul Shoener III for the original fix and Gil Pedersen for reminding me to apply it!
  • Finally fixed the Tales of Phantasia 'bum note' problem! The ROM set its sample directory to the upper-most page and I forget to code for the hidden 64 bytes of RAM, that appear when the boot ROM is switched off, when fetching sample addresses.
  • Adjusted the relative cycle length between the 65c816 and the SPC700 slightly to get Terranigma working again.
  • Oops, the emulated joypads 3 and 4 via the emulated Multi-player 5 interface weren't working. Thanks to Steffen Schwenke for the bug report.
  • Optimised the echo sound code - by-passed the the FIR filter code if only a pass-through FIR filter was defined by the ROM.
  • Modified V and H-IRQ register changing code to trigger an IRQ immediately if V-IRQ is enabled and the scan-lines match and either H-IRQ is not enabled or the electron beam position has already gone past the trigger point. Fixes the screen flicker in F1 Grand Prix.
  • Modified the priority-per-pixel mode 7 code to use BG#1's clipping data if the top bit of the mode 7 pixel is set. Fixes initial track drive-through display in F1 Grand Prix.
  • Modified the sprite priority levels for the priority-per-pixel mode 7 display. Now the car can be seen in F1 Grand Prix.
  • Wrote a sound DSP register recording scheme which 'plays back' the register changes in sync with the sound generation code. I'm bit disappointed, it only improves the sound in a very few games... Scrapped the code, it actually causes more problems than it fixes. Oh, well, another 3 weeks work wasted...
  • Fixed a SPC700 wake up problem for Lufia I - made the SPC700 also wake up when the 65c816 read from one of the four comm ports.
  • Included lots of sound code speed ups and sound quality improvements from Takehiro TOMINAGA - many thanks go to him.
  • Look out for stage 1 3Dfx support (bi-linear filtering in hardware) in an upcoming release and stage 2 support in a future release that will use the hardware to render the SNES screen. Expect a large increase in emulation speed.
Thanks to RetroGames for the news.

P.S. Can someone e-mail me and let me know what distro of Linux I should go for? I used to have Red Hat 5.1 but when I did a full install of the whole CD, kernelcfg still wouldn't run :(

ADAMEm is one of the oldest emulator, as it was firstly released in 1996 (on the same time as Marat Faizullin's emulators). Judging by the changes list, you can consider this version as a major improvment over the previous one:

  • Replaced sound files and improved sound emulation
  • Replaced Marat Fayzullin's Z80 emulation code with Z80Em
  • Improved ADAMNet emulation
  • Replaced the colour palette
  • Added parallel port emulation
  • Added expansion RAM support
  • Added snapshot support
  • Added 80-column TDOS support
  • Added cheat-code support
  • Added reverb and stereo support for SBPro and SB16 compatibles
  • Fixed some minor bugs

Posted on Emu News Service:

"I have a very important announcement to make and I'm not sure where to begin, but I'll try to do my best. A little less than a year ago, I moved this website from its original location on America Online to ClassicGaming.com. Without going into the nitty gritty details, it was a mixed blessing. Sometime after my move, ClassicGaming.com (which is a part of Critical Mass) registered the domain name www.emunews.com. They did so without telling me. In fact, I didn't even find out about it until much later. You can imagine my surprise when I read about it in a posting on Zophar's Domain's message board.

Furthermore, for some reason, www.emunews.com leads to ClassicGaming.com's main webpage, not EMU News Service. When I tried talking to them about this, they refused to discuss it. In fact, they never bothered to respond to my e-mails or ICQs. This went on for months. I finally got sick of it and last week I sent them an ultimatum. Only then, did they finally respond. And when they did, they refused to transfer the domain name over to me. So I sent them a personal letter, pointing out all the things I have done for them over the past year and asked them to reconsider. They refused. I was told, in no uncertain terms, that ClassicGaming.com is not about emulation; that it's a business. They value money over people.

On the one hand, it's only a domain name. In the grand scheme of life it's not that important. But on the other hand, I sort of feel betrayed. I thought they were my friends. I thought they were people I could rely on. But they did all of this behind my back. For months, they continuously ignored my e-mails and ICQs. They handled this whole thing very unprofessionally. And even though I was willing to pay them what they paid for the domain, they still refused.

Before I go any further, I want to make it perfectly clear that I firmly believe that both ClassicGaming and Critical Mass are entitled to run their business anyway they want. I respect their right to run their business as they see fit. I have no quarrel with that. However, it is now clear to me that these are not the type of people I wish to work with or with which I wish to be associated. Therefore, effective March 1st, I am permanently moving EMU News Service off of ClassicGaming's server. It is vitally important that everyone go to this page and bookmark it now. If anything happens between now and March 1st, this page will be the only way you can find out where I've moved.

There's a very good chance that once ClassicGaming finds outthat I've decided to leave, they will kick me from their server. You may come back tomorrow only to discover that this site doesn't exist anymore. So, please bookmark this site now. You may not get a second chance.

With that said, I fully intend to continue to update this page on a daily basis until March 1st (or as long as ClassicGaming/Critical Mass permits me to do so). With any degree of luck, they might be nice and even let this site stay up for a couple months after I move so people can find my new address.

Also, I want to take this opportunity to make a second announcement. I've been working on a complete site redesign for some time now. With the exception of a few odds and ends, it's been done for almost 2 months now. But because I was having all these problems with ClassicGaming.com, I didn't want to debut the new design until these matters were settled. Even though things did not work out in my favor, I will debut the new EMU News Service about a week (or so) after it moves to its new location. It's going to really cool and you can expect to find quite a few sup rises :) I think everyone's going to like it a lot. And for those who were worried that I might change the site too much, worry no more. I have something special planned just for you.

Finally, I want to thank everyone for their support over the last 2 years. It's been a bumpy ride and this webpage could not have survived this long without your support. Thank you very much.

- Jim Pragit
Creator and Maintainer of EMU News Service

Again, please go to this page and bookmark it now. "

I don't think it is necessary to add any comments to Jim's message. If you want to know more about how Classicgaming proceed, you can also read the message on MAME Homepage. As it was not enough, NoFrendo homepage, that was closed on Classicgaming, was shutted down by it's author for the same reasons as Emunews.

  • Some changes in the NES interrupt code for a better PPU support
  • Major changes in the CPU/PPU functions (Read/Write)

  • Detection if there are more than 8 sprites at current scanline
  • Fixed a palette color bug (Darkwing Duck now works fine)
  • Added Mapper #78 (untested, but probably it works)

A guy named Jakesh is (supposed to be) working on a CPS-2 emulator. As he state on his homepage, Kallus 2 does "run" some games, and (black & white) screenshots from X-Men: Children of the Atoms are available. There was two fake CPS-2 emulators announced in the past, so let me talk about this one. First, X-Men: COTA was ported and released to PC, and the port even includes the hardware tests that are shown on the only available screenshots. Secondly, if you go backward on Jakesh's Geocities account, you will notice this guy is a warez collecter, so basically it isn't the type of an emulator author. Third, I don't see a reason why the pictures were streched to 400x300, as it is a very un-common resolution. Now if you want to believe, there is a technical document about CPS-2 encryption on the page, and it seems legit (although I do not know a lot about 68k processors). Now go and make your own opinion..

Another new beta of the Hu6280 Windows port was released. This one adds sound emulation (as in the DOS version), although the author recommends a very fast PC. A palette bug was also fixed.

I'm glad to announce we received our 500000th hits yesterday, as before the (long) downtime the counter showed 350000 but we had to reset it when re-opening. We would like to thanks everyone who kept visiting the site and sent e-mails regulary. Thank you for your support!
Zoop: I will be away for about two weeks, due to exams. So don't panic if you don't receive a quick answer to your mails :-)

After just one day, Jamsponge and Mr. Kipling have released a new version of their Windows port of Hu6280. The most noted fix is that is uses a 16-bit palette so now you can see all 512 colors! Thanks to Zophar's Domain for the news.

Here's a bit of good/bad news: Akujin, someone who was translating Mystic Ark for SNES, found out about another Mystic Ark translation that was making excellent progress.. So he's decided to quit his own translation and move on to a different game. In doing so, he's released a patch that shows his progress up to this point. It's estimated to be about 5% complete, and has not been extensively beta-tested.

Two groups remain who are attempting Mystic Ark (also known as 7th Saga 2): EmuO Translations (which has recently started over with a new team), and a group affiliated with the Confederated Translation Company, which is looking extremely promising at this point, and which has no webpage as of yet :)

Have you been wondering what the HU6280 team has been up too the last two weeks? After all, they seem to release a new version of thier emulator, HU6280, every other day! So what's been the holdup? Wouldn't you know it, it's a Windows port! HU6280 1.89 Beta for Windows runs just as smooth as the DOS based version. Check it out.

Sam Pettus has finally released his long awaited Sega 8-Bit Chart. For those who don't know him (which I doubt), he is the author of a Genesis Chart and a Super Nintendo one. The goal of these charts is to list all games for a specific system, rating them, and comparing their behavior on different emulators. This new document features all Master System, Game Gear and SG1000 games released so far (313 games) and the tested emulators are BrSMS, Massage, Master Gear and MEKA.

Gaijin Productions has finally released a complete version of Rainbow Silkroad for the NES! From the screenshots, this looks to be quite an original RPG. For those who thought RockNES was dead, some news were just posted on the homepage. The upcoming release will feature a more accurate interrupt code (allowing for raster effects) and with emulates the eight sprites per line limitation (as some games depends on it). Last but not least, the speed was slighty improved (there was a problem with the old interrupt system that caused the emulator to slow down a lot). Expect a release soon..

It seems ot work for some people but not for others, but the reason why is not currently known. Thanks to Big Ernie and Erick Hauser for e-mailing me thier specs, which makes hellGB seem to be on par with DBoy as far as function, but for Windows instead like SmyGB.

Also on the page is a completed translation for Technos Ice Hockey (NES) that I didn't even know about. :) You can download the Nectaris rom directly from the TransBRC homepage, since it's a little hard to find. You though they were dead? After a few months of idle, the Dead Serious Clan, authors of the very first NeoGeo emulator (Gekko) have released the long-awaited update to Shark, their multi-arcade emulator for Windows/DX. This version seems to be a complete rewrite, and it already supports fifteen games, including a lot of un-emulated ones - judge by yourself:
  • Flying Shark
  • Sky Shark
  • Hishou Zame
  • Same! Same! Same!
  • Fire Shark
  • Twin Cobra (Europe & USA)
  • Kyukyoku Tiger
  • Out Zone
  • Truxton
  • Vimana
  • Zero Wing / Hell Fire
  • Rally Bike
  • Teki Paki
  • Tiger Heli
  • New Zealand Story
Most of them are running with sound, and the emulation features a cool graphical user interface. As for the (short) documentation, it will be automatically generated when running the program. Enjoy!
