Nyef has released (again) a new version of his new DarcNES emulator for both DOS and Linux. Since version 98/12/20a, the following things have changed:
  • Fixed some problems with interrupts in the asm cpu core
  • Moved a loop from ui_x to nes.c
  • Added more stuff to the sound system
  • Added support for extended mappers
  • Fixed mapper 4 so that SMB3 will run
  • Tweaked the interface in m6502.h
  • Minor changes to the Makefile
  • Changed Linux ui (file->exit now exits)
  • Added Zarzon code (doesn't work well, only works on Linux).
  • Some other tweaks here and there
DarcNES is one of the only portable NES emulator with source code freely available. Non DOS users will appreciate.

I received an e-mail from Charles Mac Donald pointing that the Super Mario Bros / Genesis rom posted Tuesday appears to be "an incorrectly dumped multi-game cart, and has five other games in it, including Flicky, Columns, Fatal Labyrinth, Blockout, and Ping-Pong". If you want a proof, Charles has made a little batch file to cut/split the ROM and extract the games inside of it.

Here is a nice rom: Super Mario Bros for Genesis. You would have guessed, it is not an official game. It was probably made by some Hong Kong developers - maybe the same one who made Somari ? Anyway, it is quite good for an un-official game, although it is not exactly the same as the original. Graphics were ripped from Super Mario All-Stars on Super Nintendo, but you cannot kill enemy by jumping on them. You'll have to throw them objects, just like Super Mario 2 USA. Quite strange, heh.

I have just received an e-mail from Sumide about the Callus screenshot posted yesterday, stating it is a fake:

"Okay. I would like to *confirm* the image of this emulator running, as a fake. Let me tell you a couple of things about it.. First of all.. the word out there is.. someone made it as a joke. Secondly, if you take a close look at the image, you'll see that it's actually a stretched out image from another emulator.. take a look at the top energy bars. there's a dark blue-ish pattern which is uneven.. it should be:
- - - - - - -
when it is:
-   - -  - - - -  - -   -
That's a pretty good sign of image scaling, isn't it? :) And the bottom blue bars are.. somehow perfect! inconsistent :) Yet the bottom of the window says it's stretched out to 2x.. so everything should be consistent :P Another thing is.. the image uses only 107 colors. Sure, I haven't played the arcade version, but I'm pretty sure the arcade version uses OVER 256 colors :) I just wanted to point that out. i hate emulation scams. Things like that are tearing the scene down, sigh.."

Just can check the picture here and make your own opinion about it. You are also invited to discuss on this subject on the Forum.

Merry Christmas and here's your piece of coal: ZSNES 0.800. Here's the list of what's new:
  • Fixed up sound speeds. Timers were computed incorrectly.
  • Fixed a sprite priority bug
  • Fixed up a bug that prevented the gui to be disabled
  • Fixed up SPC capture
  • Fixed a bug when VIRQ is set on the same scanline as NMI
  • Implemented an automatic .IPS patcher.
  • Snapshot capture/skip 2 frames option now returns back to the proper menu item
  • Fixed a calibration bug with 6/8button joysticks
  • Fixed up display in 640x480x8 new gfx engine
  • Fixed up hi resolution displays in all 640x480x8b modes
  • Fixed up a bug where Mode 7 becomes corrupt after selecting
  • Save CFG from the GUI
  • Fixed a memory map bug in lorom DSP1 games
  • Fixed a potential DSP1 crashing bug where a negative value is being square rooted
  • Hopefully fixed the modem bug when using an IRQ that is bigger than 7
  • Fixed up an ADSR bug for games that changes ADSR mid-sample
  • Fixed up echo emulation (possibly slowed down emulation)
  • Fixed up a sprite caching bug
  • Fixed up a DSP1 byte check stall bug
  • Implemented a commandline to disable spc700 speed hacks (-7)
  • Implemented SA-1 support
  • Fixed a bug when selecting drive A/B while a disk is not in the drive caused a long check sequence
  • Implemented Keyboard support to most of Option, Sound, and GUI Option configurations in the GUI
  • Changed sound init code a bit. Hopefully improves sound card compatibility, but might also ruin it.*
  • Implemented off by 1 line fix (-9). This may help compatibility and fix some minor graphic glitches, but may also ruin some too.
*: 0.635 has perfect sound for me, 0.7xx had no sound for me, 0.800 crashes without error for me. Seems zsKnight and _Demo_ are making the sound init code worse with each version!

In case you've been at the north pole for the last year and a half, ZSNES is a top-notch Super Nintendo emulator for DOS.

  • 16-bits video modes support
  • Realtime save/load
  • SuperGrafx and Arcade Card emulation!
  • Six buttons gamepad emulation
  • PC Engine Mouse emulation
  • A cooler interface
  • Better battery backed RAM support
  • Tons of bug fixes in HuCard and CD emulation
  • Better sound emulation
  • More PC peripheral supported (gamepad, soundcard..)
  • ..and even more surprises :)
No release date was announced, so please DON'T bother the author with it.

Marat Fayzullin has apparently gotten wind of BouKiChi's overhaul to VGB-DOS, Dboy, and he's mad about it. Word is that Marat has emailed the author asking that all non-original source be replaced or DBoy discontinued. Within a matter of days DBoy stole away all of the former VGB-DOS faithful (including myself) and has already become the leading Color Gameboy emulator. Note to Marat: You've already cancelled VGB-DOS, and you have little or no intention of ever making a public trial version of VGB-Win despite what you're webpage says. Shutting down DBoy will only cause you to be more despised than you already are for your anti-"spirit of emulation" mentality. Make people happy for a change by allowing DBoy to be continued. After all, it's Christmas, <sarcasm>and it's not like he's trying to make money off of it.</sarcasm>

Beginning on Tuesday the 15th, and running for seven days (through Monday the 21st), Our host, Emulation World will be running a contest in which one of our frequent visitors will have the chance to win a Soundblaster Live! Value Edition soundcard. Your task is to find icons on seven of the major Emulation World sites, including this one. Each day, a different site will place an icon of a retrogaming character on their site for 24 hours only. If you find all seven icons over the next week, you will be in a drawing to win the soundcard. The seven participating sites are Emulators Unlimited, Retrogames, RAINE, PSemu Pro, Zophar's Domain, Emulation Camp, and System16. If you are affiliated with any of these sites, or with Emulation World, you may not participate. Entries must have all seven icons identified and show which sites, and on which days they appeared on. Entries must be sent to contest@emulationworld.com.

Kikuyama has released some new translation patches. Here's Square's Tom Sawyer (NES) 0.07 and Hanjuku Heroes (SNES) 0.0025. I don't really know what's new in these, but I think it's safe to say that more has been translated than in the previous patches. The zip for Square's Tom Sawyer contains the rom, by the way.

While some people are announcing fake Nintendo 64 emulators, Lemmy started working on a real one. It's called Nemu64, and it's quite promising. It does runs most demos (as shown on the homepage) and you can even see the Nintendo screen at the very beginning of WaceRace64, proving it's not a fake at all. And since no emulators can be used without roms, we started putting Nintendo 64 demos roms online for your viewing pleasure :) Thanks goes to Daniel Lehmann and Geoff Trowbridge for the news.

Sam Pettus has released an update to his Snes Compatibility Chart. This is mainly a maintenance release, as no new games were added to the (big) list. As of version 1.15, Snes9x runs more games than ZSnes (ratios are 94.5% and 94.0%, on the 1094 games tested).

Believe me or not, but I ported my Sega 8-bits emulator from DOS to Linux in less than one hour (I never thought it would be so easy to do!). It's not as fast and complete as the original DOS version (many features are missing), but hopefully both versions will be synchronized and released on the same time.

Can't get enough of those crazy Japanese emulators? Well here's DBoy 0.31 for DOS, written by BouKiChi. There's no GUI and runs on a 486/66 (heh), since it (from what I can tell) seems to be based on some old VGB-DOS code. The big news, however, is in its Color Game Boy emulation! Be sure and type -cgb at the command prompt :)

More Raine news on the official webpage, seems that there is no official release date for the new version due to the massive code changes of the emulator, especially on sound. But they promise more good news soon.

There are more screenshots of three playable games to be included in the next version, P-47 a great shoot-em-up and Avenging Spirit / Phantasm a platform game also from Jaleco.

Juergen Buchmueller is working on a PC/XT driver for MESS, the multi-system emulator. The current development version is already able to boot DOS 3, and hopefully some old games will be playable in the upcoming version of MESS. For those who don't see an interest in emulating old PC, you may have forgotten that MESS is a portable emulator (non-PC users are able to use it) and most old games are running too fast on recent machines.

Paul Robson, the author of 2001 (the one and only Emerson Arcadia emulator) is about to send the sources of his emulator to the MESS team. Hopefully, the machine will be emulated by the next version of MESS. It is a good point, considering the fact some new roms were recently dumped and are causing problems to Paul Robson's emulator - now let's hope the talented programmers behind MESS will improve it's emulation.

Megabyte has just announced the return of his site, Patent Pending. You may have heard that, just like us, his account on Simplenet was cancelled..

"After a month of downtime after SimpleNet kicked us off for breaking their ignorant ToS, Patent Pending is back! We have decided to create a game site network, under our old emudev name Konfiskated Teknologies. We now have our own domain and are hosted by maindomain (which is a lot nicer that SimpleNet). My computer suffered a hard drive crash, and we were not able to retrieve all of our files. Most notably, the whole Emulators section was lost. We are rebuilding as fast as we can however, and I should have about 50% of the site up by tomorrow night. After that, pages will have to be replaced one-by-one. It will be slow at first, but we have great plans ahead!

Other changes are tons of bug fixes (including the "quarter screen" one) and the following new features were added: scanlines, faster starting sequence, game recording, game history informations, plus other things you'll discover by yourself :-)
Here are the files:

GUI.pak - the Graphical User Interface - 1535 kb
History.pak - Games history informations - 255 kb
Wav.pak - Sound samples - 1182 kb

Please note that having all the packages installed is not necessary to play the emulator, as it's working even without it's rocking Graphical User Interface.

John Seagar has updated z26 to version 1.21 with the following adjustments:
  • You no longer need to type in the .bin extension for ROM filenames.
  • z26 is now a little bit configurable. If you type z26 followed by some command line switches, but you don't include a filename, z26 will remember the command line switches as defaults. These defaults can still be overridden with a command line that includes a filename.
  • The help screen that you get by typing z26 alone on a command line now has multiple pages. It comes up in graphics mode too.
  • A rare bug that occasionally caused graphics to be messed up at startup may have been fixed.
John, if you're reading, please send us an e-mail next time you update, you used to and you forgot this time! ;-)
