Frogacuda More on Sega
(posted by Frogacuda - 20:54)

There's a few things Max missed in the below post so I thought I'd do a follow up.

  • First, the Dreamcast harware is NOT dead. The Sega version of it is. Sega has lescensed out the Dreamcast hardware, and there will be 3rd party dreamcasts and dreamcast variants availible.
  • Second, there are a few more games announced: Sonic, Puyo Puo, and Chu Chu Rocket are official for GBA, and Space Channel 5, Crazy Taxi, American Pro Trucker, Zombie Revenge, Sakura Wars, and 2 "Let's Make A..." games for PS2. This is all basically what we all expected, until Sega dropped one major bomb: Virtua Fighter 4 will be a PS2 exclusive. This was probably a deal breaker, but DC owners should shed no tears: Sega didn't plan to release the game on DC to begin woth since it's not powerful enough to keep up with the Naomi 2 arcade version.
  • Sega has announced no plans to release it's pending Dreamcast games on any other console in the near future.

I think this new model is very intelligent, actually. Sega will still make DC hardware availible, while ridding themselves of the financial burden asociated with hardware manufacture (selling the DC at below-cost is the reson for Sega's financial woes) and still continue to support Dreamcast, while also introducing their franchises to new platforms, and spreading their audience base. Alot of Sega fans seem to feel let-down by this announcement, but I'm glad to see Sega make the right decision, rather than allowing their dedication to their hardware bury them (I will always respect Atari's commitment to the Lynx and Jaguar, but that commitment is what killed them, and I would hat eto see that happen to Sega). In any event, the DC is now $99 and it already has enough A+ material to make that a worthy purchase, along with all the games on the horizon. In any event, I think DC owners should be proud that Sega has done the smart thing, and remember that the DC has already had more classics than the N64 ever did.

  • Max The Sega thing
    (posted by Max - 19:26)

I think this really needs to be cleared up. There's been a lot of speculation going round, some of it true and some of it is complete bull made up by Sony zombies but the official word from Sega is that there will be over 100 games for the Dreamcast through this year including Jet Set Radio 2, Sonic Adventure 2, Virtua Tennis 3, Daytona 2001 and House Of The Dead 3.

However, Sega have now confirmed that they are going to become a third party and will be releasing games on PS2, X-Box, Gamecube and Gameboy Advance.

The only confirmed games at the moment are Chu Chu Rocket and a 2D Sonic game on Gameboy Advance as well as a a PS2 version of Space Channel 5.

Now before you start crying about how grim the industry is turning, when you think about this it's good in the long run. As sad as it is, the X-Box and Gamecube would kill the Dreamcast so wise Sega are planning the next move and this is to develop for other systems.

By the time the 100 Dreamcast games are out Nintendo Gamecube will be released so I for one am going to wait for then instead of buying the lack-lustre PS2.

At the end of the day it's all good. Sega are going to make LOADS of money now and more money = more great Sega games whatever system they show up on :)

When it comes to consoles Sega have been unfairly dismissed in the past five years and with this move Sega will finally get the respect they deserve. Whatever system the games are on, Sega will always be the best developer in the world so it's not the end :)

If you still don't believe this is all happening then check out the official word at Segadojo.

Lando WinEMU v0.49 default setting problem!
    (posted by Lando - 19:05)

After Monday`s release of WinEMU v0.49 some of you found keyboard bugs running in window mode. Zsolt (Author) has just mailed this info concering the keyboard bug.

When you run the setup for the first time the keyboard setting is on "Normal" by default. This causes the crash. You can find the keyboard option in the setup under Options/Keyboard, set the option to "DirecInput" and it will work fine!
Many thanks for the info Zsolt! :-)

    Lando DREAMCAST IS NOT DEAD!!!
    (posted by Lando - 18:35)

Hey Lee, I did`nt want to read your post below and I guess you dont wona read this.....(snif). Dreamcast is still alive and well and one damm fine machine it is. Sega plan to release games until March 2002 with titles like Crazy Taxi 2 and Shenmue 2 on the way.

No way will I buy a PS2. In my own opinion Sony are killing the gaming world with so many spam releases! Anyone could code on PS1 and many jumped on the band wagon. The PS1 was a cheap money spinner and you all bought a slice of the tastefull cake (bad releases). I can count the good games on my fingers. And we can see this happening again with PS2. Sega always bring out the best and they know how to code class.

When all is said and done, I`m heading for an X-BOX and this should end up as king of them all. The way I see it when Sega do stop making DC games your next step would be X-BOX! So there`s plenty to be had on DC until then. Lets hope VF4 makes it to X-BOX.

N64 is more dead than Dreamcast will ever be!!!

Just to get you back into the spirt of DC fun and if you have`nt cought this site already go now! DC Emulation is here and here to stay!!!

    fixo Some Sunday WIP news
    (posted by fixo - 10:13)

The homepage of Modeler, the Sega Model 1 and System 32 arcade emulator, was updated with a few screenshots from a couple of WIP drivers: Sonic, Rad Mobile and Arabian Fight. These games aren't playable yet but their attract modes work with incorrect colors and plenty of missing graphics and glitches.

Also the Work In Progress page of MAME was updated with following news:

    • 28th January 2001: Phil Stroffolino made a big step forward with the Looping driver. While the game is definitely not playable yet due to the unemulated COP420 microprocessor, at least the title screen shows up.
    • 27th January 2001: Paul Leaman added Vampire: The Night Warriors to the CPS-2 driver, and like Vampire Savior, it will not work before some important 68k core changes are made. Bryan McPhail sent in a Taito F3 sound update, with the sound cutting out bug fixed and stereo sound implemented (it was mono before). Ville Laitinen submitted the Roller Aces driver with sound emulation, though the sound may not be perfect. David Graves fixed the input port settings in the Slap Shot driver and now the single player game works. Phil Stroffolino added VS Gong Fight to the Taito Samurai driver, but it may have some bad colors. Mike Coates separated the 68000/010 and 68020 cores so that the ASM 68k core can be used with the C 68020 core, giving a nice speed boost to all the 68k games. Aaron Giles added another ROM set to the Hard Drivin' driver but it still suffers from a few small quirks.
Check both links below for the screenshots!

    fixo Final Burn v0.083
    (posted by fixo - 07:49)

Final Burn had no less than 3 updates over the last 24h so here's a big big catch up of what's going on::

    • Made 640x480 the default res, because it works quite well for all games. For CPS2 scanlines, make sure the res is 640x480 in finalburn.ini Now just make sure stretch is NOT ticked, and hit scanlines. Voila - fullscreen scanlines.
    • Fixed "VS Screen" rowscroll problem (background effect) and alignment of the hiscore screen.
    • Final Burn now checks for CRC *errors* in a Zip file (i.e. if the zip file is corrupt) as well as checking if the CRCs of the roms are correct.
    • Added Vampire (Jpn), which is also known as DarkStalkers.
    • Note for the rom manager programs about Vampire - I'm considering the files: vam.* in dstlk.zip to be the US parent set, and vamj.* and vamjx.* in vampj.zip to be the Japanese overrides.
    • Input can now be configured from the emu.
    • Added a layer switch for CPS games (Alt-L). Press to toggle background layers on or off. You can use this to show only the sprites.
    • Fixed the Victor ariat 'teleport' bug, which was caused by being able to press left and right at the same time.
    • Fixed some Triple Buffering problems.
    • Refined the sprite priority patch so it only modifies sprites when absolutely necessary, and also added the other priority levels.
    • Rowscroll also fixed (it used to created a bit of a glitch at the bottom of the Iron Horse Iron Terror stage as the train scrolled on)
Download at the official Final Burn page.

Frogacuda A few words aboat the DC scandal.
    (posted by Frogacuda - 17:26)

Recently many news sites, both gaming and mainstream news sites have begun irresponsibly reporting on the "discontinuation" of the current Sega Dreamcast hardware without gathering all of the facts, or taking recent announcements into account. It is quickly becoming apparent (as it always was to all who have been paying attention to Sega's press releases) that the DC is far from dead. Sega does, indeed, seem to be phasing out the current model, it will be bringing in multiple new ones. Sega recently indicated that a DC/DVD combo unit is likely on the horizon and a (get ready emu freaks) hardware Dreamcast emulator would be availible for the PC (similar to the 3DO card released some years back). It would probably be a safe bet that a new model of the basic unit will be out as well (a la Genesis 2 or PSOne).

It seems also that Sega (at least in Japan) is planning on developing for PS2 and GBA. GBA should be no surprise since the release of Sakura Wars on GBC, but some may shudder at the notion of seeing their DC games on PS2. Well according to announcements made by a sega representative several weeks ago, these releases would not be new games. They would be releases of older installments of franchise games (Sonic Adventure 1, Crazt Taxi 1, etc...) intended to spread their market to a new audience. Once again this is nothing we haven't seen before. Sega did it with many Saturn and Sega CD games on the PC. And for those of you who can remember the 80's still, a handful of (crappy) ports of popular Sega Master System ansd arcade games being released on the NES. This is nothing we haven't seen before, folks. Another interesting point to note is that Sony currently has a (stupid) policy against console manufacturers developing on the PS2, so perhaps sony could shoot themselves in the foot on that one. Time will tell.

If there remains any doubt that Sega is alive and kicking read their press release, featured at famitsu.com.

Lando Saboteur Exposed at C16/Plus4 ClassiX!
    (posted by Lando - 23:32)

This could be one of the biggest 8bit related images ever made? It`s the Commodore Plus4 version of Saboteur maped out as one FULL image built up from many, many grabs of the game. The map can also be used as a simple guide to master all 9 levels of skill.

Now finished, the map has also been play tested with the C64 version and can be used in every way. So you can guess the +4 was a port of the C64`s.

The 2 guys standing left and taken from Saboteur`s intro screen just had to be added with emucamp`s cool blue BG! I knew it was blue for a reason ;-)

    fixo Final Burn v0.078
    (posted by fixo - 17:33)

The Final Burn updates are following each other quite regularly in the last weeks in yesterday and today make no difference with updates v0.077 and 78. Here are the changes in these releases:

    • Added support for Vampire Savior (Jpn)
    • Fixed a very large bug in the way QSound sample data was read! All the drum problems are now fixed (e.g. Lei-Lei's music, Morrigan's winning theme), and voice samples are a lot clearer (e.g. Lilith's "Shining Blade").
So fans of the Capcom beat'em ups, be happy and get the release while it's hot!

fixo Snes9x Release v1.35 for Windows
    (posted by fixo - 17:30)

A new Windows port of Snes9x was released over the weekend. This version 1.35 features:

    • Added a recently played game list to the Windows port File menu so you can quickly load up your favourite games.
    • Included IPS patching support based on code from Neill Corlett - just rename the patch file to match your ROM image name but with a .ips extension and copy it into your ROM or freeze-file folder.
    • Added John Weidman's S-RTC, (Real Time Clock) emulation code. The only game that seems to use it is Dai Kaijyu Monogatari II.
    • Included code from Nose000 for games with 128Kbytes of S-RAM. Now Sound Novel-Tcool, Thoroughbred Breeder 3, RPG-Tcool 2 and Dezaemon are supported.
    • The Windows port now has an option to make the 'turbo speed' button a toggle button.
    • The optimised fixed colour addition/subtraction code was ignoring the colour window. Thanks to John Weidman for pointing this out.
    • Added mode 7 and hi-res. hack for Dezaemon from Nose000 - the mode 7 hack looks interesting (to me); I wonder if some other games would benefit?
    • Both Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean need custom sound CPU timing. Hmm. That's 4 ROMs now, there will be more... That means I still haven't discovered all the major SNES timing quirks. :-(
    • Windows port now has an option to save the S-RAM data at any time.
    • Windows port saving SPC dumps now auto-increments the filename.
    • Added work-around for a Super Robot Wars Ex ROM bug - the game was checking the wrong PPU register for end of h-blank. The game must have only worked by chance rather than by design on a real SNES.
Quite a list! Visit the Snes9x page for more info on this project and needless to say: the download.

The Amiga eh? What a machine, Great graphics, Great gameplay and fantastic sound..In fact ORG of ROMLIST emailed us to let you know of his new released Amiga CD audio CD containing the BEST Amiga songs made ever.

    He says...
The CD sold quite well. Now we only have 2 pcs left of it. Even if there still is a slight demand for this CD
I reconned the price for making new ones is far
too high. So, last week I decided to make MP3's out of this CD and put it on the net. Not all the songs
are available yet, but I'm uploading them as fast
as I can. The songs are free, and you may of course download them and enjoy them.

Thanks for that, ORG and he used the magic word 'Free' so

At last a new version of everyone's favorite Atari Lynx emulator!Unfortunately, it's a pretty minor update, but progress is progress, and we finally see working NetLynx support in this release, if only for one game. Here's what's new:

    • Scrapyard dog can throw bug fixed.
    • Eagle mode 24/32BPP Modes implemented
    • Drag and drop of cartridges to main lynx window or Icon
    • ComLynx works for Championship Rally
    • Awesome Golf buttons working again.
    • New background images added (Lynx I/LynxII/Outline)

Too bad the one game that's working has to be the recently released (and therefore unavailible in ROM form) Championship Rally so I guess you'll have to buy it/dump it to test out the netplay. From what I've heard Championship rally might be a worthwhile purchase anyway.

It's a very fun puzzle game, based loosely around Mario Picross style play. The production on a whole is very professional, and the game doesn't have that homebrew feel at all. This is one to bust out the GB XChanger for and take on the road. Give it a look.

    (posted by Lee - 15:36)

Rick Fothergill, the classic gamer from Ontario who poses as Captain Canada in his unending quest to steal every high-score title, has struck again.

On January 6th, Fothergill put together a three-hour Jr. Pac-Man game (thats 3 HOURS!) that reached the 33rd screen --reaching the 795,000 point mark - a new world record.
Fothergill also owns the Super Pac-Man world record and is one of only three classic players to achieve a perfect game on the arcade edition of Pac-Man.

Ken Sweet interviewed Rick Fothergill for Twin Galaxies to find why Jr. Pac-Man, the seventh game in the legendary Pac-Man franchise is,indeed, the hardest Pacman title of all.

I can only get to level 3!! :(

Well, folks, it's been a long frustrating month. Around 4 weeks ago my motherboard blew out. I then went home for winter break, and a few days later ordered a shiny new moterboard. After 7 days and no word from the company I began leaving inquiries on their answering machine, and by email, but alas I was ignored. Eventually I found a way to get through to a live operator who assured me the parts would be sent in a few days. I got variations on this story over the passing weeks, and I decided to cancel my order, but alas it would take 2-3 more weeks to refund my money so it would appear I was condemned to wait it out. And I am still waiting. My order has not yet been sent. Hopefully I will work something out soon, and I will be able to resume normal posting duties. I have my time better organized this semester, so I am looking forward to restoring Emucamp and making it once again the most active emu news site on the web. Please bear with me. Hopefully it won't be too much longer. Once again I extend my apologies. Oh, and NEVER, EVER order from www.desertdevils.com if you plan on reveiving your order the same month you placed it.

    fixo Final Burn v0.74
    (posted by fixo - 10:40)

Some nice updates on the Final Burn end where v0.74 got released quickly after two previous version. Here's the summary of the recent released:

    • Triple buffering in fullscreen mode! For those who don't know what this does, triple buffering allows a 'clean' update of each frame of graphics, without any image tearing. End result - fast moving images look better. It's like WaitVbl or VSync, only it doesn't slow down the emulator at all. Triple buffering is supported on most modern video cards, but if it fails to init for any reason, the emulator will just do the graphics the old fashioned way.
    • Fixed QSound tempo (it was too slow)
    • Interpolated QSound
    • Row Scroll (used for 3D floor on some stages)

A new version of the classic C64 game Jack Attack has just been released for the PC.

Jack Attack 2 includes all of the nostalgic C64 levels plus 70 great new levels.

JA2 has updated graphics and super sound. And now two players can simultaneously play either cooperatively or competitively.

Because JA2 is non-violent, this is a great game for kids (especially the "Just for Kids" set of levels) but definitely more than challenging enough for adults. There are even "special powers" designed to players of differing abilities play together as equals. More info can be found from the link below:

    Max Final Burn 0.069
    (posted by Max - 15:47)

The arcade emulator for Windows has been updated.

    New features:

    • Added a SFZ Region switch to the .ini file. There are six regions.0x00=Japan ("Street Fighter Zero")
      0x01=USA ("Street Fighter Alpha")
      0x02=Hispanic ("Street Fighter Zero")
      0x03=Asia ("Street Fighter Zero")
      0x04=Europe ("Street Fighter Alpha")
      0x05=Brazil ("Street Fighter Zero")
    • The new SFZ decode files are now used.
These are more accurate since they decrypt the whole rom area - emulation is now more accurate (fetches are decrypted, reads are not). With these new tables, the memory check also passes.
    • No row scroll yet.

Looking good! Now you can play the arcade classic at home.

    Max Dreamarena Boycott
    (posted by Max - 16:32)

Now, I know this isn't really emulator related but I do know there are a lot of Sega fans who visit Emucamp.

From Monday 8th of January to Wednesday 10th of January many UK Dreamcast owners are boycotting their Dreamarena service. Dreamarena is basically the Sega Europe equivalent of Seganet. Unlike American Dreamcast owners, British Dreamcast owners must pay for every single minute they are online. The charge does not go to Sega; the charge goes straight to British Telecom and is 1p per minute off peak and 3p per minute on peak. Off peak being after 6PM of weekdays and all weekends and on peak being all other times.

American Dreamcast owners pay $20 a month for unlimited access via Seganet but UK Dreamcast owners do not have the option to pay a flat fee. The only option that exists for UK Dreamcast owners is to pay the local call charge of 1p per minute. Sega have been saying for six months that they are working on a fixed rate deal but nothing has ever materialised, nor have we ever received any real information on the deal that they are working on.

A penny a minute may not sound much to complain about but when you think how important net access and online play is to Sega's survival as a major industry player over the next twelve months then it is obvious that un metered Internet access is a must. People want to play Quake 3 Arena without worrying about the cost; Phantasy Star Online deserves to be played online with people all around the world and without a second thought whether the call will damage your bank balance.

Many people that don't have PCs have been lured towards Dreamcast because of its Internet access. For some, Dreamcast is viewed primarily as a machine with cheap Internet access. Just imagine if you used Dreamarena for the Internet as much as you used your PC for the Internet. For some this is their only option and with extensive DC Internet use comes a massive phone bill. Just one off-peak hour a day on Dreamarena will total up to £18 over the period of a month. This is approximately one and a half times more than the cost of unlimited use of Sega Net.

Just how much Dreamarena was actually costing people was highlighted when Chu Chu Rocket first came out. Due to the addictive nature of the game, many people found themselves with phone bills totalling £200.

This is not on. When our phone bill is mounting up the pennys, SEGA gets nothing. It all goes to BT. Yet if Sega did do a monthly flat-rate fee then they would get money, a lot of money so what's the problem? Why shouldn't we get the same treatment as our over sea friends?

So I urge all UK Dreamcast owners NOT to use the Dreamcast online from Monday 8th of January to Wednesday 10th of January. To find out more info about the boycott see the official site below.

    (posted by Zoop - 15:25)

Bart Trzynadlowski has released today a new version of his Genital68k emulator. Please note that it is only a 68000 CPU emulator only, for use by programmers mainly. This recently released emulator is going to be a good alternative to StarScream (which is powering emulators such as Gens). This version fixes register losses on emulator API calls, memory handler functions has been modified, and a few minor optimization were done.

  • Roni JNes v0.40 Beta 1 Released!
    (posted by Roni - 14:15)

WOW! Looks like I spoke too soon last night, here is the brand spankin' new release of JNes for us all!! Here's all the work done on it in the last year:

  • Implemented audio updates 4 times per frame via queue, might slow down performance so I waited this long to do something drastic like this, sounds great tho
  • 16-bit audio and mixing
  • Raw PCM emulated nicer now..
  • Noise and Pulse volume enveloping corrected I hope
  • Tri counters fixed? (Thanks to Matt Conte for the doc on nesdev a while back)
  • Pulse freq sweeps rewritten finally, put this off a long time
  • DPCM rewritten from scratch, big difference in beat style
  • Vertical scroll problem fixed in TMNT
  • Changed the scanlines back to 262, this makes a game I know not work right but I feel having correct timing is the right way to go
  • Another NSF loading problem fixed
  • Sunsoft Mapper fixes and speedups
  • Implemented an accurate real-time zapper read handler, didnt realize necessary..
  • Small transparency fix for some games (Windowed only)
  • Added ability to load external palettes or keep default, 3-byte RGB triplets
  • Integrated NSF support into the j6502 main cpu core, via small hack
  • Rewrote sign flag, and IP handling in j6502, speedup
  • Window 3X mode added
  • Added an option for NES 8-pixel clipping emulation
  • Sprite0 hits tweaked a little
  • Rewritten Game Genie from scratch, max codes is 64 per game
  • Rewritten PPU Rendering, which removed MMX/ASM speedups, still fast tho
  • Rewrote direct draw frame locking technique, dangerous when jnes crashes..
  • Removed 24bpp rendering support, useless, slow etc, use 16/32
  • Rewritten entire banking system for cpu and ppu, speed boost
  • Added a recent menu into the interface, quite nice
  • Rewrote every mapper, less memory used, faster speed, save state friendly
  • Rewrote sound graph, more friendly to direct draw these days
  • Rewrote bitmap capture code from scratch, faster and nicer.
  • Finally released the partial MMC5 support, not the most accurate emulation, but it is good enough to play Castlevania III US well, which is good enough..
  • Tweaked save states to save the new structures as well
  • Rewrote ppu mapper tile handling, works right now, no hack
  • Started allocating and releasing large chunks of memory nicely
  • Direct Input 2-Player code rewritten, smaller, easier to maintain, as well as the option to completely? tweak the devices
  • Changed quick-save to F7 key, F6 was too close to F5 really, you could hit it accidently
  • Added save slots selection to the Cpu menu, it might of been confusing because it was previously only accessible on the keyboard
Sounds great to me, go pick up the new version at Jabo's site!

    Roni JNes Webpage update
    (posted by Roni - 18:08)

The everlasting king of speedy NES emulators for Windows JNes has had it's first website update since August. The site features a new URL (still hosted by VintageGaming) and a new design. I'll let the update speak for itself, as quoted by Jabo:

"01-04-2001: Welceome to the new site, I rewrote almost every page in favor of a quick access, straight to the point, web site. I also updated the links page a little bit, hopefully it's a little more useful now. The message board is working again, thanks to Tux for getting it working, I can now get some feedback again. The bottom of my page has an new email (thanks emulation64.com!) if you really have something you need to talk about with me.

"So what's going on with Jnes? Well it's one year since the last update (v 0.30a). I've been working on Jnes during the last year, I just haven't had time to release something and work with people to fix the issues that would come up. Basically most of the code base in some form or another has seen serious revisions or complete rewrites over the last year (audio and game genie being the most important), which is a good reason for the long time frame between updates. The only thing I have left I still want to do is hopefully try to fixup my noise channel generation style, possibly convert to using 16-bit audio, and general testing to make sure there are no known issues left still. I may also try to clean up the NSF support as I'm not sure if I really like the way I sort of threw support for it in.. give me some feedback on if you guys like or if anyone actually uses it, via the message board as always.

"I'd like to thank all the people who have been helping me test the latest versions out, Azimer and Quietust especially, and the more bugs I find, the longer it will unfortunately take to make a release, but the better it will be... As far as releases, I have school starting in a few weeks, as I'm sure a lot of people do, so I'm aiming to release before that time."

I know I'm looking forward to the next release!
