FWNes Alive?!
(posted by LrdEFN - 23:26)

Wow! Look what I stumbled upon, courtesy of Cory... FwNES has updated their page! The last update, I believe, was on October 30th 1999! Tuxedo Mask claims that "FWNES IS NOT DEAD, it is just progressing very slowly.". Here are some of the updates:

  • The Mapper90 support is quite advanced!
  • The beta Super Mario World (HK) runs better than the rest of the emulators that do it at this time!
  • Added support for Street Fighter Zero 2(Alpha) which works just right!
  • Sound support and PPU is much more complete than in the public v0.302!
  • The speed is a bit greater! (Note: The author believes it is, but is not quite certain!)

Wow, quite a big update! It may have taken a while, but it looks like it’ll rock!

Also, I would like to apologize for not updating lately.. I have been (and am) VERY sick, so I really haven’t been on the computer a lot lately.. (Yes, a miracle!) I would like to thank uzplayer and the EmuCamp staff for posting for me and putting up with my crap.. And I want to thank YOU guys for dealing with this.. =)

Special Thanks to [Cory] on IRC for this update!

  • Snes9x News
    (posted by Lycia - 11:57)

Snes9x has updated its site with some news about the emulator and other tidbits like netplay! Here's what Gary Henderson had to say on the site:

Over a month with no new release, but I've been busy...

Spent over a week trying out a new sample decompression routine from Anti Resonance, the SPC Tool author. This routine finally allows the wind sound effects in Chrono Trigger and FF3 to be emulated more or less 100% correctly. The bad news is that the routine causes sample glitches on a few other games I tested so it might have to be switchable.

Still relating to SPC Tool, Anti Resonance has offered, well, actually, I asked, if his SPC700 and sound DSP assembler emulations could be included in Snes9x - after all, he did user Snes9x source code as a reference - and he said yes! I would of had o rewrite them in asm anyway, one day, but I'm sure Anti's code would be a lot better and faster than mine. The catch is that SPC Tool code is 16-bit and Snes9x is a 32-bit app. But fear-not, Anti is currently converting his code to 32-bit as I type.

Network game-play (both local network and Internet) on the Windows port is progressing; no GUI yet, but several rewrites later and I can now play multi-player games between machines on my mini-network at home. There are some Windows threading issues I still have to look into - basically if Snes9x can't hit 100% frame rate, the main emulation thread seems to steal all available CPU time from network client and/or server threads and emulation speed doesn't remain constant. Also, I need to improve the protocol: slim-line it some more, otherwise just two people playing will saturate a modem connection, and add additional messages; but its getting there.

On another speed related issue, I found a nasty problem with the auto-frame skip code in the Windows port - if Snes9x couldn't hit 100% frame rate rendering, the auto-frame skip code made it skip even more frames, 16 out of 17 times you ran Snes9x! Whoops! The few Super FX and SA-1 games which weren't fun to play on my 266MHz notebook computer due to speed, are now very playable.

Oh, and I'm hot on the trail of the Voodoo 3 problems people are having, well, I have a theory, at least.

It looks like that the next version of Snes9x could be a major release. Let's hope. And as always, . . .

    Stay tuned!

TNSe has released yet another version of his already awesome NES emulator, NESten. Here's what's new

    * Finally fixed weird colors for good? (Please let that be a yes :)
    * Added a mapper header editor for .NES files.
    * Moved all mappers out to DLL files.

Since the mappers are now external, you, the end user, can make your own mapper support files (if you know how of course, heh). More info on this, plus an SDK with some examples can be found at NESten's homepage linked below, which is where you should go to download the new version also ^_^

ROAR - The VIdeo Game Museum moves

It is rare to say that Emucamp has helped a site get a domain name. You would always hear about it from such sites as Retrogames and Zophars Domain when a site moves to a domain name. Thus we are proud to annouce that ROAR, The Video Game Museum has moved to it's own domain name, courtesy of Emulation World.

In addition, they have started out great as they have two hosted sites. The CVGP which was a previously hosted on ROAR and Neo Geo Pocket Shock which was hosted at the now defunct Geoshock. We here at Emucamp wish Daemon luck on his new site and urge you to check ROAR at the link below.

    Blini! Version 4a Released!
    (posted by LrdEFN - 13:48)

A new version of blini! has just been released! What is blini!? blini! is software that allows you edit your bleem!.ini file. Does that mean I can add support for more games?! No, not quite. Bleem!'s ini file has NOTHING to do with the games that work and the games that don’t work. All it does it tell Bleem! the game’s status. This is not quite UltraHLE.. This was really just a small bug-fix update, but a very important one:

  • Bug fix (The remote button in release 4 doesn't work).
  • A new version of UPX is out (v0.99) and this version of blini! is compressed with it. UPX v0.99 made by Markus F.X.J. Oberhumer & Laszlo Molnar.

    SNAME Version 0.1 Released!
    (posted by LrdEFN - 22:26)

Nicola has just released the first version of SNAME (Simulation and Non-Arcade Machine Emulator)! What is the purpose of SNAME you ask? Its main purpose is to be a reference to the inner workings of the emulated arcade machines. If the hardware these historical games run on ever stops working, the games will be lost, so this project attempts to keep that from happening. As a nice little side effect, to preserve these games, you must also be able to actually play them! SNAME and it’s source code are completely free! It's a small download, so you should give it a try and see what it has to offer!

  • A New Version of Fusion Released!
    (posted by LrdEFN - 05:17)

I have just been informed that Fusion, the Mac emulator for PC has been updated to version 2.2... Fusion allows you to have the pretty little MAC Desktop on your PC.. I posted this because it still falls under the category of emulators, depending on how you wish to define it.. So if you like MACs but are stuck with a PC, you should really give Fusion a try!

Special thanks to Ghola, once again, for this update!

Note: Although it has been updated to verison 2.2, the site currently only has 2.1.. I know, it’s odd..

    A New Gameboy Emulator!
    (posted by LrdEFN - 04:42)

A new Portuguese GameBoy emulator based on HASH has just been released. It's name is GameBBR (I’m guessing it stands for GameBoy BRasil). This is what the authors had to say in their site: (Note: These were translated from Portuguese to English.. Lucky for us we had a translator to help us out!)

  • It’s the first public release of GameBBR.
  • Translation of Hash to Portuguese.
  • Fixes to a few bugs in Hash.
  • Initiated the implementation of DirectInput.

    The author also said:

"Ufa, depois de algum tempo trabalhando em cima do projeto do GameBBr, consegui colocar ele no ar em uma dada interessante."

Our translator translated this for us:

"Pfeww, after a while of working on top of the project, GameBBr, I got to put it up in an interesting date."

The author also claims he’s attempting to figure out how to add sound. We will keep you updated as this emulator grows!

Note: The site is in pure portuguese, just go down to where it says "Faça o download do GameBBR clicando aqui." (Begin the download of GameBBR by clicking here.) to download the emulator.

    CPS 2

  • Street Fighter ZERO / Street Fighter ALPHA: Warriors' Dreams.
  • Street Fighter ZERO 2 / Street Fighter ALPHA 2
Street Fighter ZERO 3 / Street Fighter ALPHA 3 Plays quickly at the beginning of first tune played).

    ZN-1

  • MAME CE Gets it’s Own Domain!
    (posted by LrdEFN - 03:56)

MAME CE, the Windows CE port of MAME has just gotten it’s own domain! You can now find it at http://www.mamece.com instead of the old URL, http://www.vintagegaming.com/hosted/mamece . The author also claims to have a better installation shield (Although it seems to require both Installshield and package for the web to do a self extracting install.) He is also making changes to the ’common.c’ video routines to optimize video performance and setting up a scheme for dynamic recompilation of the Z80 cpu.

DreamWorks Interactive bought by Electronic Arts.
    (posted by LrdEFN - 01:13)

Well, again this is not directly related to emulation, but it's pretty important news in my opinion.. Electronic Arts has stated that they have acquired DreamWorks Interactive. Under this deal, DreamWorks Interactive becomes a subsidiary of Electronic Arts. This is what Spielberg had to say:

"We have been extremely pleased with the working relationship that has developed over the past two years with Electronic Arts. EA brings world-class production processes, strong global distribution, and an unmatched marketing infrastructure to DreamWorks Interactive's top-notch creative talent."

I find this to be good news and bad news.. It’s good because Electronic Arts knows how to use the companies to produce good games, however it’s bad to have a Microsoft in the gaming business..

    NeoMAME v0.36 RC1 Released
    (posted by Roni - 22:29)

Well after seeing a new MAME release today and realizing there is no more GeoShock for a NeoMAME, I had thought of a fitting tribute for the site. I got the new Allegro, got the MAME source and compiled a up-to-date NeoMAME, just like GeoShock would do. This is my way of saying thank you to Haze and katharsis for hosting my page and for being all around good guys since meeting them!

P.S. I only edited one file from the source, and I've included it in the zip, also remember this is a unofficial release, so don't bother the MAME team.

    EmuCamp Newsletter?!
    (posted by Lycia - 07:07)

Yes, that's right, folks! As I'm sure you know, I maintained the newsletter over at Zophar's Domain, but since I no longer work there, I've decided to bring my newsletter over to Emulation Camp! However, I need your help, Campers! I need you to come up with a name for the newsletter because quite frankly, EmuCamp Newsletter just doesn't sound catchy enough. So, what's in this for you? Well, at the bottom of EVERY issue of the letter, your name will be mentioned for coming up with the name! Imagine that? Your name, in EVERY issue! Now, you're probably wondering, What's this thing going to have in it?!? That's a VERY good question. I've decided to include the following:

  • Featured Site: A featured site that will include a short description of the site and the highlights of it including the URL.
  • Featured File: A featured file that will include a description of what the file is, what it does, who wrote it, and where you can go to download it.
  • An Interview: My team and I will interview someone involved with emulation, and give you an inside scoop about the person in question thats being interviewed, how they feel about emulation, how they feel regarding certain topics, and where they feel emulation is going.
  • Viewers Feedback: This is where you, our visitors, get to throw in your two cents. You can send the newsletter team questions regarding emulation and we'll attempt to answer them the best we can and provide them in the next newsletter. Restrictions? We won't accept question regarding commercial ROMs, warez, porn, or anything illegal. Additionally, we will only be selecting 5 questions, so make sure they're good!
  • Featured Quote: I will include a humorous quote from #EmuCamp on EFNET. So, if you feel you are funny, pop in there and shoot your mouth off and who knows? It may appear in the next newsletter.
  • Horoscopes: Andrew, my astrological advisor, will create wonderful horoscopes for you all to ponder. If you're wondering about Andrew, I assure you. Andrew is a certified astrologist and knows his astrology. He's a great asset to my newsletter team and has been a major benefit to me in the past. Thanks Andrew!
  • Much, much more!

So, what are you waiting for? Put on your thinking caps and help me come up with a name for the newsletter! Think of the fame. . .the glory. . .of having YOUR name. . .in EVERY issue . . .and. . .*voice trails off*

Maybe PSXEmu will be back later - When I'm in the mood to continue this - But I won't if it still goes the way it's going right now, since this isn't worth running the risque (what happened now) to loose some real friends.

Sega Power dies along with Geoshock

Well I figured I better post this here since I can't post anywhere else about this. My SMS Power and Genesis Power download mirror site, Sega Power, which until earlier was hosted by GeoShock is also dying along with the unexpected closer of GeoShock. I have no free time to re-upload files to a server, sad really, I was going to do some massive stuff to the site today... unless I find a host for the site (and honestly I'm not really looking) then the unexpected closing of one very good ROM site (GeoShock) has closed yet another good ROM site. I would like to personally apologise to the users of GeoShock, my site, and all the other hosted sites from GeoShock. We never saw this coming. And I'd like to wish all the members of GeoShock luck in their future projects on the internet. It was fun for the short time I was there.

I personally found this to be rather odd, but this was posted at The Vintage Gaming Network from a reliable source:

"It seems that a major developer of emulation software is finishing work on a Sega approved emulator that will play Playstation (version 1, I'm assuming) software on the Dreamcast hardware. Probably will debut at E3. Given the extremely short supply of PS hardware that we will see thru the end of the year and the EXTRE MELY SHORT supply of PS 2 hardware that we expect, this could be a major boon to Sega. Look for Sony to squeal like a stuck pig and for Sega to be showing Sony 3rd party titles in their booth at E3."

I found this to be extremely weird, and I’m not sure whether to believe this or not, but I trust VGN, so I’ll have to approve.. Well, hopefuly we’ll see soon..

Special thanks to The Vintage Gaming Network for this update!

    Emu2Million Prize Change
    (posted by uzplayer - 18:59)

I have decided to replace the ZDU CD Prize with a 3rd PSX CD of your choice. So now instead of getting 2 PSX CD's and the autographed ZDU CD, the 2,000,000th hit will now win an additional PSX CD of their choice.

You're probably asking yourself, "what about the outtakes?" Well, look for them on Emucamp this weekend. I feel that you should be able see them all so instead of including it on a CD, I will be offering all the outtakes (about 10 of them) online for you to watch for yourselves. If you still wish to recieve a CD of it all, email me and we can arrange something.

Sad News - P©SX Has Been Discontinued..
    (posted by LrdEFN - 18:57)

Well, the author of P©SX project has posted some real sad news... This is what he posted:

"It is with great regret that I must announce the end of my work on the P©SX project. A change in work has resulted in my inability to legally continue PlayStation emulation. I have had a lot of fun with this project, and I hope the project will be continued by the rest of the team - I know they have what it takes. Hopefully this will not be another failed emulator."

It's sad to see a growing emulator come to a sudden halt.. We here at EmuCamp request that somebody that has what it takes to try to pick up on P©SX.. NoComp, we wish you luck with your new job, buddy..

I made some great progress, fixing a bug in the controller read operations, and decoding the majority of the pins on the link port. My demo is going a lot better now. Hopefully I will have something worth looking at soon."

    EmuSchool Updates Their Website!
    (posted by LrdEFN - 16:19)

Looks like Lrd just stumbled upon some good news for NES fans! I decided to drop by EmuSchool's site today, and looks like they have just updated.. Here's what EmuSchool had to say:

"Despite what many people have thought, EmuSchool is not dead. I got a new hard drive about 3 weeks ago, and re-installed Windows and Linux. I just recently got everything back to normal and installed Visual Studio again. However, I'm getting a really weird error running (not building) my latest beta. So, I'm going back to the version 0.1.7 source, which is the latest one that still runs correctly. Look for an update soon."

As a Nintendo Entertainment System fan, I really hope they will update soon! I can only hope.. I can only hope.. =)

Retrogames has reported that MAME32 now supports the ACTLABS PC light gun.

The following message was the latest update at the official MAME32 page :

"ChrisK has added support for the ActLab gun system so you can use this light gun through DirectInput. He says it's quite fun w/ the Exidy shooters like Cheyenne, Crossbow etc. Although he hasn't tried it, T2 should also work as would any shooting game using a cross-hair".

That's cool - when MAME adds a Lethal Enforcers driver - such a gun would be great ! I wonder if i can buy this weapon in Germany ?

  • Pole Position
  • Tumble Pop

I am very sad that RAINE has died, and I'm hoping that the site was merely hacked and that the authors have been sleeping all this time, but nonetheless a sad day for every one of us. Hopefully some of these games will be supported by Mame in the time to come, and hopefully someone will be kind enough to continue RAINE.. We can only hope!

    Pretendo Updates it's Website!
    (posted by LrdEFN - 23:09)

Pretendo, the Nintendo Entertainment System emulator by Delta and PrOxY, has just updated it's site! With a new layout, this is what they had to say:

"After nearly a month of not working on Cake (my 6502 core), I had this sudden urge to get cracking again. For starters, I have cleaned up the code a LOT, and re-worked many things. It's now in Object-Oriented C, so it's loads cooler than before. I've also re-written lots of functions/routines to be faster, and more efficient. Unfortunately, I will have to re-do the Address Modes system from the ground up, and change my method of opcode emulation. It's looking a lot better than before, so I shouldn't be complaining. Hopefully it will be complete by the time the next version of Pretendo rolls around. Speaking of Pretendo, PrOxY has completed the cheat finder, and it boasts compatibility with NESten cheat files. We're working on our plugin system also, and we've just added preliminary support for CPU cores. Mapper plugins are also on the way. That's all for now."

I'm a big fan of Pretendo, and according to Delta, they are working VERY hard to get normal sound on the emulator! So guys, stay tuned!

Special thanks to Delta for bringing this to my attention on IRC!

RabidFrog from Total Emulation has informed me that he and BisH (of EmuGaming) are planning on a updated port of "Chaos: The Battle Of Wizards" to the PC. The original was written by Julian Gollop in 1984 for the 48k ZX Spectrum (He is most famous for having developed the X-COM series). Here are some features they hope to include:

  • Sharp 640x480x16bpp graphics, up to 500 frames of animation on each pre-rendered character!
  • Fully pre-rendered backdrops!
  • Mouse control! (A blessing if you've played the original)
  • Support for up to the original 8 players at once but with Online Gaming!!
  • A league for the best online gamers (like UT or Q3)!
  • Use of DirectX7 will make this a win9x only game.
  • It will be a free download!!
