Railmaster Short BeOS Review
(posted by Railmaster - 22:24)

For those of you with fast connections and multi-gigabytes (is that a word?) of hard drive space free, I suggest you download the BeOS Personal Edition.

Initial impressions are confused for one who has not used it before. Dubbed the "media OS," it is very fast with most types of media. The OS comes with the ability to play mpgs, mp3, wav, and most other common media formats. In addition, there are thousands of software ports to this system.

I installed BeOS on two computers - flawlessly, with no reformatting or partitioning nessecary.

On both computers, all hardware was detected and used perfectly. BeOS even ported my network card settings over from Windows 98. With literally no hassle, I was using my cable modem again in no time.

I have as yet only installed BeCQ (ICQ for BeOS) and Quake 2. Both perform perfectly.

I mention this on an emulation site because there are several emulators out there written and/or ported to BeOS.

The personal edition is 5.0. I had previously owned BeOS 4.5 and I have seen the OS crash only once - when my anger in Q2 multiplayer caused me to kick my computer, and subsequently causing the slot 1 processor to crash to the bottom of my full tower case. CPU falling out is usually bad. It is a fast operating system. The DL is 43Mb.

Railmaster Technews - Celeron 2?
(posted by Railmaster - 22:07)

Celeron 2 news hit me by storm. Had no idea they were after a two, probably in response to that Spitfire cpu I posted earlier. Either way, news of this cpu has apparently been around for weeks :

"The Celeron II sports a somewhat new SEE-hungry core, the Coppermine128. But don't let the cognomen fool you into thinking that this thing runs on anything but a 66MHz FSB. It's .18 micron, 1.5v core is overclock-crippled in the range of 8.5-9 @ 66MHz, since scoring a FSB of 100MHz would push the tiny beast into the 900MHz range (unless HstCLk +33 is used). Neither reviewer was able to to get the CPU up on a 100MHz FSB, and oddly Anand worked very hard to excuse Intel's choice to keep the Celeron on a 66MHz bus.

I suspect that Intel has made another error in underestimating AMD. With the cost of a pizza separating the Celeron II 600MHz and a 650MHz Athlon, and with Spitfire coming in fast, Intel should've put this sucka on a 100MHz bus, and come out of the gates as strong as possible."

Reiginsei Ys 100% Translation

David has released a 100% English translation of the original Ys for the NES. I play RPGs a lot, and I've never tried out any of the Ys series, but I've heard nothing but good things about them. I guess the first in the series would be a good place start ^_^ David's page also state that Ys II is close to completion, woohoo! You can pick up the Ys translations at the site below.

Opi Holme's Atari 8bit Games updated
(posted by Opi - 18:14)

If you're looking for some Atari 8bit stuff check Holme's site - you wouldn't be dissapointed !

"Thanks to everyone for the offers of help with the new webpage, and logo, I have a couple of very talented people working on the page and logo, so expect a big change soon. I'm not giving any dates as I'm not sure when it will all be ready yet.

I can say though, that the games section will come back at over 1800 games instead of the 850? or so now. Also, look out for Atari console support as well. I'll be updating the emulators section to a seperate page, with ALL atari emulators listed (includes ST & Lynx, and eventually Jaguar as well). Why would I have those when I'm a 8bit site? Mainly for convenience, as many 8-bitters also upgraded to the 16 or 32bit machines as well. That said, there are no plans yet for a ST section. There are many good ST Games sites out there, so I dont want to compete with them".

    Lycia Dreamcast Emulation Anyone?
    (posted by Lycia - 06:28)

EmuForce has just posted a small article about the impact that a Dreamcast emulator could have on the emulation scene on their site. My opinions vary as I like to see new systems emulated, however, I believe that new systems should be given a chance to breath before coders attack it and create emulators for it. I mean, we all know what happened when UltraHLE and bleem! hit the scene, right? Here's a portion of the article here:

Let's talk about the possible consequances of an Dreamcast emulator on the emulation scene. IMO this will kill the scene. I don't want the emulation scene to become the warez scene! True emulation people may remember what happened at the time of NeoRAGEx release. A ROM request and exchange flood!

    Delta Thoughts on BeOS R5
    (posted by Delta - 22:27)

I've taken my time to write up a few words about BeOS R5. You can find it in the news section of the Pretendo site.

Railmaster Technews - More on Spitfire / BeOS is now FREE / Soyo 1Ghz
    (posted by Railmaster - 20:43)

"Athlon core. Intro flavors will be of the 550, 600, 650, 700Mhz variety. Sounds a like the celeron eh? Well, while the celeron line continues to make multipliers into the stratosphere and run 66Mhz FSB, the Sptifire will take advantage of the smoothastic 200Mhz Bus. And what of pricing? Check this:
AMD will be competitive with Celeron, with the cost per chip expected to range from about $75 for the 550MHz to $175 for the 700MHz."

    ***

BeOS fans have finally got what they have been waiting for. The release of BeOS V5.0, is now a free OS! Many of the sites mirroring this file have been hammered due to the incredible demand. You can download it at the BeOS site linked above, if its allowing you to connect. We will try and mirror it here, once all the server issues are taken care of.

For those of you who don't know what BeOS is, it is an operating system programmed for maximum performance on your
PC computer. It is *fast*. I recommend downloading it just
to try it out. 45Mb download. If you already have win9x, you can install BeOS for a multiple boot option.

    ***

SOYO sent a pretty tasty press release our way, announcing that they're coming out with three new KX133-based boards that are specially designed for the 1GHz Athlon and two new VIA 694X-based boards that are designed for Intel's 1GHz PIII. The PIII boards will use SDRAM and not RDRAM. The VIA chipset-based boards in Loki's recent CuMine mobo roundup did really, really well, so I'm looking forward to seeing how the 694X performs. A new contender in the cpu wars.

    * Fixed a bug in the 6502 core, now it runs the entire cicle before going to other.
    * Added handle for 2 more opcodes, used in Mapper #0 games, now 81% of it emulated.

    (posted by Lycia - 22:17)

Dream64 has just reported with some news about their N64 emulator. Here's what they had to say:

We have a new member, Frazzman, who I'm sure you've all heard of from the FutureSF project. He is helping out with RDP right now and since we've had bad luck with graphics coders, I've decided that I'll take it on. We'll see what happens. So far, with the RDP, the OpenGL is coming along great. Well, my fingers are crossed as much as all of yours. Just keep in mind that the project is still very much alive. Also, once they're available, I will post up some screenshots.

Could we see a release next month? Stay tuned to find out.

    lilac Happy Birthday Emulation Camp!
    (posted by lilac - 10:56)

Today Emulation Camp celebrates its third birthday of serving the emulation community. As many of you don't know the full history behind the site, allow me to summarize.

    • March 27, 1997 - Zoop founds Master System Camp, an originally French site dedicated to news about the Sega wonder.
    • January 4-February 1, 1998 - Zoop and I prepare to move the recently renamed Emulation Camp to what was then a more stable SimpleNet.
    • February-August, 1998 - Emulation Camp experiences very prosperous times as one of the Big 4 Emulation News Sites.
    • August 1998 - Simplenet inserts a new policy into thier service agreements. Although we strongly petition that emulators themseleves are legal and EmuCamp hosts no commericial files of any kind, Simplenet pulls the plug anyway.
    • October 1998 - Emulation Camp resurfaces at its current position on Emulation World and resumes is duty as a news site with a new Sonic-theme design.
    • Late 1998-2000 - EmuCamp grows to regain its status as one of the premier emulation sites on the web. Particular articles and the yearly countdown of emulators of the year make EmuCamp one of the most controversial sites in emulation.
    • March 20, 2000 - Emulation Camp recieves its 2 millionth hit, prooving success for us is earned with hard work.

Another milestone occurs on Friday, when Emulation Camp will begin to produce the list of the Top 100 Emulators ever, as voted by you, our readers. If you haven't yet participated in this first-ever countdown, please do. You're part in the Emulation Camp of the future is as important as the staffs. We thank all of you.

and these are changes in v 0.30 released on the same day (emulation is wonderfull - isn't it ?) :

  • Fixed bug in the I/O handler, this makes MANY more games work and fixes glitches in a lot of the already working ones!
  • Added a configuration file. Sound, frameskip, colors and timing related settings are included. Read GEM.CFG for details.
  • Many games seemed to think GEM emulates a SGB, this is now fixed and decreases startup time of these games considerably.
  • Improved balance in sound output volume. Channel 3 was too loud.
  • New pattern conversion routines, they're better and much faster. This also fixes a color fading bug.

Railmaster Technews - 3DFX sells / New "Spitfire" CPU
    (posted by Railmaster - 20:34)

For those of you thinking 3DFX, 3DFX, 3DFX...

The recently announced 3dfx 'special technology group' (Basically old STB employees who were spun off a while ago) have been bought up by Enseo, Inc.
(STB was bought by 3DFX awhile back.)

Also, if you want faster emulation of the more complicated systems, but have little money, these CPUs might be for you :

The Register has pricing details of the Spitfire, which is AMD's "Celeron" launching April 24. On launch they will also cut prices of the current Athlon processors.

    According to Guella's site, a Spitfire 550MHz will cost $79, a 600MHz $99, a 650MHz $140, and a 700MHz $175.

Athlon prices, as we have reported here in the past, will be aggressively pitched against Intel's offerings. The 1GHz will drop to $1071, the 950MHz will cost $722, the 900MHz will cost $589, the 850MHz will cost $429, the 800MHz will cost $323, the 750MHz will cost $242, the 700MHz will cost $187, the 650MHz will cost $163, and the 600MHz Athlon will also cost $163 as it is shuffled out of the equation.

For those of you who have heard a Celeron is cheap, think again. In most benchmarks, my Celeron 450 is only 1% slower than a P3-450. At the purchase time, the prices were $100/$350 respectively.

What this means is that with Bleem! you can play your favorite PlayStation title on your PC, provided Bleem! supports it (which it likely does), often in much higher resolutions and graphical splendor than an ordinary PlayStation console can handle.

Roni Decrom v2.0 and RockNES Page update!
    (posted by Roni - 10:32)

Well last night I noticed this but had not the time to post it here. But Fx3 has updated the RockNES homepage with this to say:

  • RockNES X was having problems due the major changes to suit the new CPU core (hence no new version yet), but now it´s ok, working and in sync with the unreleased version 1.05. Problems with the GUI and general bugs were squashed. Ale is very busy with his band and life, not sure when a new version will come out. About the DOS version, it´s much better, with tons of problems fixed (Mapper #4 mirroring, now Gauntlet works fine), sound cleaned up somewhere and more. I´m using the newest DJGPP package (hence long file names are supported).
  • There´s a new Decrom today (version 2.0), my NES tool. It decodes NES graphics into an ascii file. This version fixes a couple of problems & bugs.

Good news I'd say so look for new versions of both RockNES's soon and for now go satisfy your ROM hacking needs and go download Decrom from the RockNES Homepage.

P.S. Fx3 is still looking for someone to make him a WinAMP skin for RockNES, is it really that hard ?

    Opi zx32 V2.00.03.22 (BETA) released
    (posted by Opi - 10:19)

zx32 is a ZX Spektrum emulator for Windows - the best one in my opinion !

  • Contented memory effects for the +2A/+3 are now emulated in accordance with the guidelines in the comp.sys.sinclair FAQ.

  • All 24- and 32-bit color depths are now supported indirectly (i.e. you're missing the 'direct' bit of DirectX when you use them J). Screen update speed for these color modes should be relative to your video adapter's general 2D performance and about 10 times slower than 8-bit color updates.

Thanks to Navarone's emulation 9 for the news.

    (posted by Lycia - 21:41)

A new version ZD-SPC, an SPC player, has been released! Here's a list of what's new:

  • Added SPCCore from SPCTool to ZD-spc and Internet plugin! Thanks AntiRes!
  • Added SPC altering to ZD-spc for the SPCTool core
  • Added Advanced Configuration for the ZSNES & SPCTool core
  • Changed the ZSNES core to the newest version (Thanks zsKnight)
  • Changed title bars to be less WinAMPish Thanks Saffith!
  • Fixed a bug with volume being reset
  • Fixed more bugs with internet plugins
  • Fixed some problems with changing spc cores

This SPC player is great and seems to run pretty good on lower end processors if you use the ZSNES SPC core. Snes9x's core offers you some benefits as far as quality goes, but you might just want to switch between the two core to see which one you like best.

    (posted by Opi - 03:22)

I was informed, that there was some misunderstandings with our story about the closed NO$GMB homepage and a cracker group called Utopia !

Please note that the person Cloy and the group releasing the keygens and cracks for NO$GMB are totally different. Cloy maintains his own french emulation page and hasn't done any criminal action :

"Just a small word for saying that I'm not the author of the crack of NO$GMB. I respect the authors of emulator and I bought several licences for various emulators. For I think that it is necessary to encourage the small programmers independants against these large companies (that I don't respect) which make only shit for money."

Thanks to the various people which mailed me about this !

    LrdEFN Squeem! Put On Hold?
    (posted by LrdEFN - 18:56)

Unfortunately, Dead_Body, the author of the Nintendo Entertainment System emulator, squeem!, is having a few technical problems. His computer seems to be messed up, and won’t even boot up. Therefore, he is attempting to fix his computer and expects it back within a month. Because of this, squeem! will not be able to be updated. Dead_Body is accepting any donations he is offered.. I wish Dead_Body the best of luck with his computer, and hopefully things will get better for him. Until then, stay tuned to EmuCamp.

Note: Lrd has 3 projects to do, all due on Wednesday, therefore updating is kinda hard.. Children, never put your work aside until the last week when you are bombarded with stuff to do..

Martin Korth seems to be pissed about a crack" or "key-gen" released by a group or person called "utopia" that makes his very good (i lisenced it) Game Boy Color emulator FREE for everyone ! So he decided to close his page (for a while ???) to explein his reasons - he wrote:

"No$gmb seems to be published by somebody called "utopia" now, so this webpage doesn't appear to be of very much use anymore. Please inform me if anybody knows the identity (real name, and address) of this so-called "utopia" group or person. For anybody else, I haven't decided yet if I continue to release freeware/shareware updates in future. If I decide to do so, then it will be probably limited as follows:"
