Reiginsei Top50 French Translations Apology
(posted by Reiginsei - 22:54)

Top50 sent me this message about his French Emulator translations. It's basically an apology to the RockNES author and a message to other emulator authors. Here's the message:

Apologies to emu authors :it seems that some people didn't enjoy my translated emulators ...

I noticed this news on Rocknes X website :
About the RockNES X french translation: the author Alexandre da Veiga (Ale) was not asked about a possible translation of his work, hence a permission to do that. If the guy had sent an e-mail saying "I will translate it, ok?" he might said "go ahead, cool", but the guy simply translated the emulator. He does not like that other ones change part of his work without ask him before if they can do, even with a strong "yes" as possible reply. He is not against the RockNES X language translation btw, but they might be asked before. These are his words.

Well I'm really sorry for not mailing the author about the translation. In fact, in the past I already tried to mail some emulator authors (that I won't mentione) that didn't answered my e-mails. Other though that it was none of their buisness since I don't ask them help for translation... So it was a big surprise when I saw RockNES X News... I have to apologize to Alexandre da Veiga. I will remove RockNes X translation if requested without any word. BTW all authors can do the same thing if they feel angry... just mail me and I'll remove all files concerned. But I have always though that translation should increase people that could enjoy the good emulator I translated (because I don't translate bad ones ^_^;) . I have never though that it would be handle as a copyright or source breaking because I only translated the program. So again all apologies come to authors that feel angry because of my work...=(

lilac Meka 0.54 Released to Beta Testers
(posted by lilac - 20:32)

Zoop, man of many sleepless nights, has made a new version of his excellent Master System and Game Gear (and various other Z80-based systems) emulator available to registered users. Some of the new things:

  • Fixed invalid vertical sprite wrapping in video mode 2 (bug introduced in version 0.51, slighty affecting The Castle and maybe other games).
  • Added PSG wave synthesis sound rate setting in the configuration file. Rate is no longer fixed to a weird value like in all previous versions, avoiding the clicks and noise with certains soundcards. You can also change the rate to the default values of 11025, 22050 and 44100 Hz from the GUI pop-up menus.

  • Added separate PSG channel enabling/disabling. Mainly useful for musicians who want to listen to different channels separately, but it is also very fun to disable some channels and play games with somewhat new music :)

  • Fixed FM bug when hard pausing and unpausing in some games.

  • Addams Family, Operation Wolf and Sonic Blast now automatically run in PAL/Secam mode when NTSC is selected, due to the games having bugs in NTSC mode.

  • Fixed the badly positioned line of Hang On in Hang On / Safari Hunt.

  • If brutally forced to close (like when switching to a blitter using an invalid resolution), Meka now switchs back to its starting directory.

  • Added screenshot filename template to the configuration file. You can now configure weither you want padding, short or long filenames, etc..

  • Changed screenshot numbering starting value from 0 to 1.

  • Added "integer stretched" display of the theme's background pictures

Disappointed you can't play it now? Want to be a registered Meka user? Then become good friends with Zoop and send him a rare Sega cartridge! Or donate some money to the SMS Power fund so they can buy those rare cartridges that show up frequently on eBay.

Zoop Monster World 4 (Wonderboy 6) translation
(posted by Zoop - 14:59)

Demi (of Demiforce, authors of a number of great translations such as the one for Final Fantasy 2 / NES) with hacking help from Antiriad (Raine's author) finally released a long awaited translation for Monster World 4 for Megadrive. This game is nothing but the equivalent the non-released Wonderboy 6, so at my unbiased :) opinion it is a great game. So I urge you to check the translation work by Demi, and hopefully enjoy the actual game.

If you ROM image is in SMD format, I have uploaded a tool to convert it right here - made by the good old Diskdude in 1997.

FNM Vegas 0.94b
(posted by FNM - 02:12)

Tim Meekins made this test release of his Genesis/32X emulator available recently... here's some notes about it:

"This is a special test release build of Vegas. I've completely updated the rendering engine and I'd like to get as much feedback as possible on how well it works. If you have frame rate issues, please send me e-mail. I'm mainly interested in frame rates when playing Genesis games. 32X emulation is still slow overall, you don't need to tell me that. Please report CPU, graphics card, and what rendering mode you have problems with. Also mention if full-screen was any different from windows mode. I'm hoping this release is compatible with more graphics cards and is faster. Oh, be sure the game isn't PAL, as they run at 50fps. Also, with the new updates, I think frame-skip works a bit better."
Speeds on my 2 computers are:
- PPro 200, Banshee, 30-40fps
- P3 600, GeForce256, 60fps

Changes:
Fixed 4 bugs dealing with shadow and hilight mode.
Tweaked some Genesis DMA code.
Wrote new rendering pipeline.
Wrote new scanline and screen rendering effects.
Rewrote DirectX code.

Once again, thanks to Emulatronia for the news.

FNM SegaEMU 0.50
(posted by FNM - 02:01)

Atani updated his multi-console (SEGA only !) emulator once again, and here's what's new:

- Genesis/MegaDrive emulation
- Sound - 100% complete... sound funky on some machines
- Video - 100% complete... Not everything works as planned
- Currently setup as one player, preliminary support for second controller.
- Added Scanlines support, this works on all emulated systems.
- Added GUI
- Added ZIPped rom support (all systems)
- Added "Simple" rendering mode, this works on all systems. This option forces the system to render the entire screen only at the end of the frame rather than line by line as normal.
- Added Auto-Country select during rom load.

It's good to see a new multi-console emulator evolving... thanks to Emulatronia for the news.

lilac XBox Interview
(posted by lilac - 10:14)

Vincent Lopez of EBWorld.com was able to corner J. Allard from Microsoft's XBox division and get a few hundred words out of him. Although it doesn't get into the details it certainly sounds like the XBox will not come with keyboard or mouse, so don't expect it to be a Wintel machine for your television. Allard does say that ethernet and broadband will be standard equipment though, along with four controller ports, and a large capacity hard drive. All of this is standard because Microsoft considers future add-on drives, like those employed by Nintendo and Sega, to be somewhat detrimetal to development. Allard also points out that Microsoft's game division will be developing a large number of first party titles and not all will be ports from the PC genre.

FNM Hu-GO! 1.26 sources released !
(posted by FNM - 00:09)

This great PC Engine (TG16) emulator was updated; its sources are out already and the binary(ies) will be out in a day or two. Here's what Hu-GO! author Zeograd said about this release:

Well, I'm a bit ashamed because this version contains nothing new for players. I've been busy with extra emulator pc engine projects such as C compiler and some other stuff so I've only be able to change sources for easing ports. Now, I've moved the main displaying stuff out of Allegro control and I bet it's quite easy to port the main engine to another lib (I may try to do it for test purposes). I'm releasing sources tonite and I'll certainly make a binary release tomorrow but more to keep the rhythm as some people asked for rather than real interest in having the binary. Even if the executable is pretty much the same as the previous one, I'll try to change the environnement in the archive (cheat code updated, other skins ...)
As for the C compiler, I can't say that will be new but next release will certainly be a bomb. David Michel is doing a HUGE work on it and is improving it of an unexpected way...

Very preliminary support for VRC7 has been added as well as preliminary support for FDS. Until I get better information on these they will probably not improve a whole lot. VRC7 will almost definately receive very little attention since it is only used in 1 game that I know of. I also threw in some support for recording the output to a WAV file which does not work very well(inaccurate timing). Use it, abuse it, let me know what you think...

Frogacuda Sad news...
(posted by Frogacuda - 14:16)

You may have noticed that I haven't been posting lately. Well this is the result of some nasty corruption on my main hard drive partition. Well thanks to a nice bug in FDISK both of my partitions were completely destroyed, forcing me to do a low level reformat of my entire drive. The result: I have lost all data from my drives and the most resent backup I have is 10 weeks old. This means that all of my work updating the files section, as well as other recent work has been destroyed completely. Thank you Microsoft. What this means for you, the Emucamp reader is that you will have to wait a bit longer for the update. I will be working hard to get caught up, and we have some great new staff helping out on the section, so hopefully this will not be so tragic for for you EC fans. And now a moment of silence for my Hard Drive:

Thank you.

drewbert SNES 9x Developers Journal Updated!
    (posted by drewbert - 17:56)

Gary made the following announcement on the SNES 9x Developers Journal:

    "Almost there...

I'm getting very close to requiring beta-testers for the new NetPlay feature - it basically will allow up to five people running five copies of Snes9x on different machines to play simultaneously over a TCP/IP lan, or direct modem connection, or Internet connection or, in fact any connection that Windows supports TCP/IP over - although whether a game will be actually playable over the Internet will be down to local ping times...

I've been using Bomberman 5 as my main test ROM - it allows five simultaneous players and its very sensitive to Snes9x NetPlay sessions getting out of sync: it spins a random number generator each frame and uses it to build random screen layouts; one dropped frame and the Snes9x NetPlay sessions are looking at different screen layouts!

I'm beginning to wish I'd never started adding NetPlay - its been a nightmare. Part of the problem is me not having access to a network for 99% of the time while developing the code and the remainder is due to the implementation I've chosen...

I've tried to be clever - most implementations of network game-play just send a joypad update message to another session and then block, waiting for an update message from the other session. This has three problems: it slows down all sessions to the speed of the slowest machine, it only allows two players and it makes no attempt to hide network delays, probably making Internet game-play impossible.

My implementation is different, though not original. One Snes9x session acts as a server and sends out heartbeat and joypad information messages to Snes9x clients. A separate thread in the client sessions queues up heartbeat messages and then the emulation thread uses these to act as a speed regulator, skipping the rendering frames when its falling behind or sleeping when its caught up. Once each frame the client sessions send joypad state information back to the server. The major advantage here is that the server doesn't have to wait until all clients have received a heartbeat message, emulated a frame then reported back their current joypad states.

If you're interested in becoming a beta-tester for the network game-play, post a message on the Snes9x message board (http://www.snes9x.com/forum.asp) - I'll note down names and e-mail addresses and contact people when I'm ready. Please mention how you intended to try out the feature, e.g. direct modem connection to another machine, local lan, etc. so I can choose equal numbers of each."

SNES 9x is one of the best(if not the best) SNES emulators out there. I can't wait for the next release!

Mr. Valenti, of the Motion Picture Association of America infamy(he's the bum who instituted movie ratings and the head of the MPAA, who is currently involved in a full scale assault on consumer rights) gave testimony in the MPAA vs. 2600 case, consisting mostly of "I'm not aware" and "I don't know". The whole lawsuit is because 2600 hosted a program called DeCSS, which allows users to copy a DVD to their hard drive. A list of mirrors is available here.
