Frogacuda AGES 0.21
(posted by Frogacuda - 23:17)

AGES, a rapidly improving 32x emulator for windows, has been updated to 0.21. This new version sports some major impovements in speed and compatibility. Here's the list:

  • Massaged GFX renderer: 16.5% speed-up for 32X emulation, 44% speed-up for Genesis emulation.
  • HUGE compatability boost for Genesis games, fixed some problems in 32X games: Afterburner 32X looks much better, MK2 now works, etc...
  • Sega Mouse and Sega 4 player peripherals now emulated, though the mouse is still unusable.
  • Fixed bankswitching. (Guess its not just for 32X eh?)
  • Completed BIOS faking, no ROMs required anymore. (NOTE: Never use this unless you are trapped in the desert with no Internet connection.)
Music to my ears. This emu also supports the Super Street Fighter 2 ROM released by Genesis Power some days back. Head to the homepage for the download. Thanks to JoseQ for the mail.

Slasher ElectrEm Update
(posted by Slasher - 16:11)

Beta 3 of this Acorn emulator for Windows, DOS and Linux has been released. Here is what's new in this release:

  • now a lot closer to correct Electron timing. This has the result of meaning the CPU runs slightly less on a second by second basis, and hence the emulator is a little faster
  • fixed the cassette interface baud rate. In the old beta, a lack of knowledge about interrupts meant it was doing (approximately) 609 baud, when the correct number (and indeed the emulated speed) is 1200.
  • fixed config file stuff in Linux & Windows, and quick save/load of state snapshots in Windows.
  • wrote a 'virtual' DFS, which does a lot of the basics of DFS file loading. This should tide the emulator over with respect to the DFS images available on the 'net until I get a real DFS working.
  • wrote a new buffered mode sound output system. Doesn't quite work correctly yet, but is a good start
  • small things : fixed speed and 'second click ignore' bug in Load Dialogue in the Windows version, and added Page Up / Page Down to Load Dialogue for all versions.

Fixed a bug in SH2 memory architecture, a few more games work.
Tweaked 32X memory access timing. A few games run faster now, a few run a tad slower.
Fixed a bug in the SH2 division unit.
    Optimized the SH2 division unit.

    Summary:
    Doom 32X now runs perfectly!
Knuckles & Chaotix 32X now runs perfectly!
Virtua Fighter 32X now runs perfectly!
Virtua Racing 32X now runs perfectly!
    Darxide 32X now runs perfectly!
Space Harrier 32X runs a bit better.
Kolibri 32X and Brutal Unleased no longer work. Should be easy to fix.

I think that the 2 to 5 fps increase will make my 32X experience more enjoyable seening as I have a 266 with 64mb. =^) Click the link below for more info on this smooth emulator.

    Slasher KIAEP WIP
    (posted by Slasher - 10:51)

The KIAEP(Killer Instinct Arcade Emulation Project for Windows) now has a sister page. Nathan Adams created this news page so he could update more often. It has indeed been updated with great news. The status of the project is as follows:

    • CPU has been emulated
    • Sound processor WIP

Click the link below to see the project working it's magic.

    [UPDATE]
The page has been updated with even more good news. They have the game running up to the Character Select screen. Here is what was stated in the update:
k, good news and bad news... first the good news:i've located all the buttons and switches so i can now navigate the menu
      screens and start a game.
      the bad news:
      1) when i start a game, after player selection the program dies. i think
this is probably just a bug in the CPU or memory mapping.
      2) the KI board sux bad. everythings is done is 'software' with no hardware
assist at all. thus it is slow and looks shitty (well, it looks like it
does on the real KI machine, which compared to todays 3D cards is pretty shitty)
      3) since everything is done in software, it is very slow.
      next steps:
i'll try and track down the problem so that at least you can slowly play a
game. once that is done, then i will need to go into the code and
painstakingly reverse all the gfx code and come up with a system for a high
level interface. this will greatly improve the speed and the quality of the
graphics. this will be very similar to what Bleem! does with the PSX
emulator. this process will take a long ass time.

      Cheers,

      AnonGuy

We've had OverClocked ReMix, the Minibosses, and countless others work with classic game music, and we've had mainstream musicians sample videogames, but I do beleive that that there has actually been a song about emulation. This is a first attempt so the production is a little rough, but the song is alot of fun, and worth the download. Check it out.

    Slasher Atari800Win version 2.6c
    (posted by Slasher - 11:43)

This Atari 800 emulator for Windows has been updated to version 2.6c. Here is what is new in this version:

    • Built from Atari800 codebase 1.0.4, VisC 6.0 Service Pack 4
    • Corrected a keyboard bug that would cause some keys to be lost if you were typing quickly
    • Corrected a registry query bug that could throw exceptions in Win2K
    • Small file dialog (used in the 320x??? screens) is now much more functional and easier to use
    • Hard Disk directory-selector dialog boxes now much easier to use Note: Because of an oddity in the way Windows handles the special directory-selector dialog box, you MUST be in GDI mode to get it. If you are in DDRAW fullscreen modes, you will get a file selector that nevertheless will select the directory for you. I recommend you set this in windowed mode before you go into full screen(remember Alt-Enter will flip between the two).
    • Images from compressed files are opened read/write now for compatibility. Keep in mind that CHANGES are not SAVED when you write to a compressed image. If you are going to be writing to a disk, keep it in uncompressed form. They will be marked read only in the drive dialog box.
    • Various command line options fixed to override registry values. In other words, command line options take precedence over your defaults saved in the registry.
    • Cartridge selection has been simplified; the "hold down option" button was extraneous and removed...either select BASIC, or any other cartridge, or none, and all will be well.

For the rest of the long list click the link below(Reminder:Get your reading glasses ready).

    (posted by Slasher - 17:51)

The Apollo 64, a Windows N64 emulator, homepage has been updated with progress. Here is what Azimer said in this big update:

I haven't updated the developer's log or main page for awhile now. I've been waiting on a few key bug fixes which I believe revolve around the CPU Interrupt handling. Unfortunately, I haven't done an ounce of work on that code so it's pretty foreign to me. While Phrodide is gone I might decide to get involved more in the CPU to get the bugs fixed. It seems Phrodide has left early on his vacation so none of those bugs were fixed last week. I don't really expect to seem him in the next 6 days (before August 1st). If I decide not to work on the CPU, I will continue the plugin development slowly, but concentrate more on my other projects. I would rather work on the plugin using Apollo's executable/source rather then 1964's. That is all for today and my last post until September probably. Check the developer's log for updates until the next release.

    Slasher Snes9x v1.30 released
    (posted by Slasher - 12:34)

Snes9x v1.30 has been released! This is a SNES emulator for various platforms. Here is what is new in this release:

    • Forgot to force GUI surface to be displayed when some dialogs where popped up - problem only happened on full-screen mode with triple or double buffering enabled, or when using 3dfx mode. It appeared as if Snes9x had locked up, but pressing Esc would pop down the hidden dialog.
    • Added a couple of options to the Settings dialog. Now its possible to disable S-RAM auto-save which was causing Snes9x to write to the hard disk every 30 seconds on some games, causing the occational skipped frame.
    • Fixed Reset option which was accidentally broken when Netplay support was added.
    • Added support for Dirt Racer - it leaves the Super FX chip running all the time, so the default CPU emulation method never allocated any time to other CPUs and the emulation seemed to lock up.
NMI timing changed again. Now an NMI can only be triggered once per frame and enabling an NMI after the normal trigger scan line triggers an NMI immediately. This fixes display glitches in Ys 5, Stargate and Daffy Duck.
    • Fixed the WAI instruction to only 'wake up' once an actual NMI has triggered, rather than just waking up when it should have triggered. This fixes Battletoads, broken since version 1.29(ish).
    • Changed NMI again. Made reading or writting to PPU register 0x4210 not clear NMI pending flag. Seems to allow all the NMI timing sensitive ROMs I had on my list to now work without any special hacks. Illusion of Gaia now works again.
    • Another NMI fix - cleared the CPU pending NMI flag at start of frame; Battletoads intro was crashing without this. A long DMA was stopping the SNES CPU so it couldn't and shouldn't respond to the NMI signal from the PPU.
    • Fixed Netplay problem when game didn't have any S-RAM and Sync Using Reset was being used. An error dialog was displayed and the client would disconnect from the server.

    Chris Something for your brain
    (posted by Chris - 07:15)

Today I'd like to present you with a very interesting statement that our friend Lance of Emu Xpress made. It's something to think about twice.

"The little emu scene of ours is like anything else, a constantly changing subculture that pick up various influences from other internet subcultures as time go by.
What bothers me so much these days in the increased hostility on IRC.

Back in the days people had AOL'ers to harass in their own little pogroms. Saddam loving Iraqis that simply deserved to be bombed back to the middle ages was also a popular discussion topic for some time. Not to forget the recent Serbs...

Scapegoats come and go and the most popular one for the moment is probably the "me am brazil" movement. One disturbed individual known as Reirom have managed to bring shame upon all Brazilians on the net with his "spell checker deficiency" and bizarre personality.
The "me am brazil" shit have been around for ages but Reiroms star like appearance added more fuel to the fire. Once in a while you hear site ops testify how their mailboxes become filled with lame mails and the majority of them come from Brazil, and Brazilians on IRC are treated like village idiots (hehe, hello Daemon...).

Everyone seem to know these days that Brazil is an underdeveloped country indeed, Ayrton Senna have disappeared from our collective consciousness and their catholic values is a legal pretext for a kickban.
Soon some major emu news site will release a leaked copy of the "me am l33t brazil protocol" where a Brazilian conspiracy to take-over every emulation related efnet channel is unveiled.

Seriously... Making fun of people might be fun but do it in moderation. If you really need someone to pick on, why not create a list with ethnic groups and countries that we could rotate so everyone had their fair share.
Chinese Muslims sounds fun eh? Jews? a classic! French? Another American classic as seen on "Southpark". The possibilities are endless [...]"

I'm back here posting news, after a terrible hacking of my PC. Well to get back track, I decided to post about the MAME WIP page. It has been updated with this news:

22nd July 2000: Jürgen Buchmüller optimized the ADSP2100 core a bit, but with no visible speed gain. Jürgen also submitted an updated Z80 core with some bugfixes. Takahiro Nogi fixed the foreground graphics in Mahjong Quest.

21st July 2000: Ernesto Corvi fixed the last remaining bugs in the inter-cpu communication in DCS emulation. Mirko Buffoni sent in a driver for Macross, but it lacks background graphics and sound emulation.

    • MAME directories are now better handled.
    • When in slideshow mode you can press (and hold) space to select the game where the screenshot belongs.
    • Press F11 to enable/disable joystick movement through the games list. (solves some problems in Windows NT!)
    • Increased the Play History to the last 21 games.
    • ALT+3 now both opens/closes games history.
    • Changed the BUILD GAMES so now every time you use it to update the database the games are sort by title after building
    • Rewrote almost the whole program, so even with the new features is now smaller and a little faster!
DOS and Windows users rejoice! Go download it now at the homepage. Another thanks to JoseQ for the news.
