Aber SNK Japan Closing?
(posted by Aber - 21:06)

NeoRageX is reporting that come October, SNK Japan will close it's doors for good. This comes just months after SNK was bought out & pulled out of the American market, killing the popular Neo Geo Pocket Color here in the states. If this is in fact true, it will be a sad day for gamers, as SNK was a big part of videogming for more than 2 decades. In addition to the ill-fated NGPC & Neo Geo, SNK was responsible for some great games like Baseball Stars for the NES (still the best console baseball game ever, IMO), the Metal Slug series, and of course, the popular& long running King of Fighters series.

Check the link below for more on this sad news

Aber Genesis Power release #238
(posted by Aber - 20:22)

The Batman theme continues with release #238, Batman Forever. Also added was this news tidit:

We have had a few requests for some sports games. We are happy to comply. In the next few weeks, we will add some sports games to the mix of our releases. Often we will release multiple games in a series on one day, spaced out over the entire day. Watch the "next release time" clock at the top of this page and check back often for new releases.
Excellent news, considering that sports games were considered the Genny's forte. Can't wait to see if my fave Powerball will be included in the upcoming releases.

31st August 2000: Jürgen Buchmüller simplified the makefile handling. Nicola Salmoria sent in a driver for World Beach Volley, again without sound due to an undumped PIC chip. Nicola also sped up the graphics decoding a bit and did some cosmetic changes to Xexex, but most of the graphics is still missing. Brad Oliver fixed Winter Bobble to work on Macs.

Frogacuda Frogacuda, signing off...
(posted by Frogacuda - 17:32)

Well the time has come, at last. I am moving away from home and into my dorm at 7:00AM tomorrow. It seems like it will be time for me to pack up my computer soon, so it looks like I'm done for the day. I don't know what kind of hardware I'll need to get setup on campus, so I might be a few days before I'm able to resume posting. Until then I leave the news to the rest of the staff. Well... bye!

Frogacuda After Burner Emu
(posted by Frogacuda - 17:20)

JoseQ put up an interesting link. It seems someone has finally figured out the sprite hardware for After Burner. While what appears at this link at first appears to be obviously fake, if you follow the site through you'll see some pretty convincing evidence. This could be what we've all been waiting for. I would also like to draw light to the fact that one of the coolest shooters ever made, Thunderblade, is also unencrypted (at least the japanese version), and runs on the same harware, so who knows what the future will bring. Keep an eye on this one.

Frogacuda NESten WIP

The homepage for this great Windows NES emu has been updated for the fisrt time since April. Here's the progress report as it appears on the homepage:

  • Thanks to efforts made by Quietust & Co, MMC5 is now working better than ever...
  • I have made NESten's XLater (Basically a color space converter) into a DLL file. What this actually means, is that you can now make external DLL's with your own custom image effects.
  • Some interesting bugs in the File loading window have been removed.
  • VS games now work, and you can insert coins.
  • A little code cleanup.
  • Still looking for a bug concerning cheats.
  • Need to redo .ini system...
  • Need to redo mapper interface...
  • Need to complete XLater DLL interface.
Good news indeed. Head to the homepage to check out some screens. Thanks to JoseQ for the news.

Well, this is becoming quite the habit. The Sega System C2 WIP was updated yet again today, with some info on 2 of my fave puzzle games. Here's what's new:

Puyo Puyo 2 gameplay now seems to work more correctly, Columns now accepts coins etc instead of being locked to freeplay and aside from colours now appears fully playable. Columns 2 likewise is now playble in C2emu (or at least should be when/if there is a new release sometime) with sound etc. although the colour palette is still incorrect.

Their is some more MIMIC WIP posted on the MIMIC page. This WIP states that the author fixed a bug in the z80 core and more about the GB driver. Here is the official word:

Fixed yet another bug in the Z80 core. This time the whole concept of HALT was wrong. This fixed SMS:Gauntlet. I also got the Gameboy VDP displaying something sensible. I wonder what else now works. I don't think many arcade games use HALT, but consoles seem to use it alot to sync with vblank and doing raster tricks.

    Blue => ROM is Ok
Red => ROM has wrong size or wrong crc

  • Added ability to cancel the creation process of database (on 1st time). If you want to cancel the building, just press the "Cancel" button and Emu Loader will be terminated (not when it's already started)
  • Fixed the MP3 pause when a game is loaded. It was generating an "Audio Initialization Failed" message sometimes, forcing the user to restart Windows to fix it
  • Added the current MAME version in use on top of the main screen. Now everytime the database is built or the executable is changed, Emu Loader will check it's version
  • Added an option to Enable/Disable the Average FPS after exiting a game (Preferences screen)
  • Fixed some spell
  • Fixed some colors (all screens are supposed to be in "Silver")
  • Fixed the MP3 files format (now you can play any MP3 format)
  • Added a popup menu to the pictures preview with new features. Just right-click with the mouse and select an option
  • Changed the pictures preview limit to 100 (for each game). Now you can have 300 pictures total (snapshots, flyers and cabinets)
  • Added more info for pictures (resolution and path). You'll find them at the bottom of the picture (main screen)
  • Added a picture selector (the 10 picture buttons is no more!). Just select the desire number on the drop-down list
  • Added a "previous" and a "next" picture button (at the bottom of the picture)
  • Now you can change the pictures by clicking on it (mouse left-click). It will change one by one (slow)
  • Updated file "EmuLoader.ini" with new options
  • Fixed the Grayscale option in Preferences screen. Now when the "Show Picture" option is disabled, pressing "Grayscale" will no longer show the game picture if the the .png file is found
  • Ripped out the "Filters" section in "EmuLoader.ini". Those lines are not being used at this moment
  • Change the format of file "MergedGames.txt" for future use
  • Take out from Vector Box the option "Gamma" (MAME Options screen). This is not used only for vector games
  • Some optimizations

    Lopantu iMAME 0.3
    (posted by Lopantu - 17:42)

The port of MAME to the IPaq Pocket PC, iMAME, may able to only use one button press at a time, but that hasn't stopped development of this MAME port. Bits of the source from MAME 0.21 and 0.36 have been compiled to run such games as Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, Space Invaders, Frogger, and Burger Time. Here's the full list of what's new in this release:

  • I'd like to say I'v finished, but Nicola is too fast as always! ;) So thanks to Nicola we have GALAGA!! And very special thanks to Martin Scragg that provided us crucial information on custon I/O chips.
  • Thanks to Dark Schneider (DS wanted to be anonymous, so I'll call him this way) that provided 6809 support and the first driver working on this CPU: Super Pac Man. The driver is based on the super-detailed KEG file of Replay emulator by Kevin Brisley (kevin@isgtec.com). Thanks to everyone.
  • Ville Laitinen provided a driver for Kangaroo, based on the Arabian hardware. I'v also adjusted the number of frames per second to 60 to the two drivers. Sync with sound should be better, though.
  • Thank to Virtu-Al (Alan J McCormick (gonzothegreat@JUNO.COM)) Amidar and Turtles now have 100% correct colors.
  • Arabian has correct colors now.
  • Fixed a bug in all games with starbackground: using a frameskip > 0 introduced slowdowns. Now the speed remains unchanged.
  • Fixed tempo speed in 1942. It was playing at half speed. Should be correct now. Also fixed a bug in noise volume of PSG. Noise was playing at half volume.
  • Added support for Donkey Kong japanese version
  • Minor adjustment to Space Invaders color strips
  • Mad Planets doesn't crash anymore with the new samples (shorter!)
  • Added colors to Warp Warp. Thanks again Chris.
  • Fixed Dipswitch in Elevator Action. YOU'LL HAVE TO DELETE THE PREVIOUS DSW FILE IN "ELEVATOB" DIRECTORY IN ORDER TO GET IT RUN CORRECTLY.

I just loaded up the Tetris ROM and it ran first go. Only took 5 minutes!!!However, I did spend the rest of the day trying to get it looking like a GB. Of course, its not playable, yet, and there are about a billion things missing. But, it looks VERY promising.

    Frogacuda New MSX?
    (posted by Frogacuda - 07:43)

Well if what I just read at Zophars Domain is true then the MSX may be making a comeback. Reportedly it is a joint venture between ASCII and Sega, and will begin with a new emulator from K-Tech which will run under Windows, PlayStation and MSX (erm....MSX emu for MSX?). Following this, software (both new and old), will go on sale via internet downloads, and if that goes over there will be a new MSX machine which will feature 4MB of RAM and 4MB of VRAM, and a Z80 running at 100-120Mhz! Yes, that's right. A 100Mhz Z80. Don't ask me, I'm just posting. It is also reported to have built in cell-phone connectivity, and is expected to sell for 19800 yen (about $185 by my reckoning). Don't expect this one to hit US shores, folks. Anyway you can follow this link to read more about and stay tuned to the link below for further updates.

Slasher FPSE Good and Bad News
    (posted by Slasher - 16:53)

I'll give you guys the good news first:Chrono Cross is working on FPSE. =^) There are even pics posted on the Homepage. And now for the bad news, read this:

Here there is a small message I didn't want to put online.
FPSE may work or not, but his name means FREE PLAYSTATION(tm) EMULATOR.
Unfortunally it seems somebody doesn't know what it means the word "free", or they can't read since I have written a file called TERMS.TXT
FPSE comes with his sources because I like opensource and I wanted to make FPSE as a nice tool for coders (so that's why the hated "Rs232 emulation" still exists).
But, again, someboby doesn't know how it's hard to do it.
      So, for the last time:
      1) If you use my sources, please tell me what you are doing and what you have planned to do.
      2) You can't distribuite any modified version of FPSE without my permission, even if you changes are really small.
You know what happen if a 'DeleteFile("*.*");' is hidden somewhere in the code, right?
      3) If you use some parts of our code, please remember to the users where you have taken the informations from.
      4) And finally, you can't change the name of the emulator.

FPSE0.09 should be out with XA and MDEC audio support, SPU working (in win32 version, 3D sound hardware like EAX is supported) on all platform: Win32, Amiga, the unreleased Linux and the work-in-progress BeOS.
Now I don't know if I should continue this really hard work.

Let's all just hope that the author releases. =^( Let's all just keep our fingers crossed.

    Slasher Snes9x v1.31
    (posted by Slasher - 11:28)

Well another Snes9x, SNES emulator for windows(buggy as hell OS) release. This one makes tons of changes to the directsound code. Here are a few name:

    • Snes9x DirectSound code modified - the mixing block size is now always 10ms for Windows 95/98/2000 and 20ms for NT 4.x, now there should be no need to
enable Sync Sound when a large sound buffer is required (helps emulation
speed). The maximum sound buffer length values have been updated to reflect
      the smaller mixing block size.
    • Changed the DirectSound code back to use an offset from the play position
as the place to write new sample data into the sound buffer - on NT 4.x the
write position seems to vary randomly rather than being a fixed distance
infront of the play postion as documented. Now I know why I used the play
      position originally!

    Frogacuda ChronoMix #2
    (posted by Frogacuda - 23:00)

The first and only Emu MC, Retrobase's own Chrono has released his second track. This one's a bit more downbeat than his decidedly funky first release, and also alot more sophisticated. The premise of this song centers around what would happen if a certain ROM loving Brasillian took over the emu scene. It's definately dope and definately funny. I think Chrono deserves a big hand for his unique contributions. If you're still having hesitations about downloading the full 4 meg song, here's a 45 second, 180k, low quality clip to whet your appetite. Now head on over and show him some love.

    Frogacuda EPSXE
    (posted by Frogacuda - 18:31)

Seemingly out of nowhere there's a new Playstation emu in development, called EPSXE. And it looks to be one hell of a competitor. It's being programmed by Charlie, Zulu, and Tango and has been shown to run Crash Bandicoot 3, Soul Calibur, Driver, Spyro, Time Crisis and more nearly perfectly. It appears to support enhanced graphics reolutions and hardware acceleration a la bleem! and is reported to also support sound, plugins and Memory cards already! Almost sounds to good to be true. Keep your eye on this one. Head to Emulatronia to check out the screenshots. Thanks to JoseQ for the news.

    Frogacuda ROMulate/SRS confusion
    (posted by Frogacuda - 18:03)

Earlier we posted on a program called ROMulate, which we were informed was a file sharing utility for ROMs a la Swapoo. The authors have informed us that ROMulate is infact a program designed for leeching ROMs off of the author's ftp. SRS (Swapoo Really Sucks) is the ROM sharing utility currently being developed. I apologize for any confusion or frustration this has caused. Head for the homepages to learn yourself right.

Frogacuda Site of the month: OC Remix
    (posted by Frogacuda - 07:46)

Apparenly OverClocked ReMix has been named site of the month by EDGE Magazine. Here's their blurb:

    • The beauty of the internet is not that it builds communities or that it has created a buisiness revolution in the form of ecommerce, but that it allows one man to remix the music from Bubble Bobble in a hilarious drum 'n' bass style and make it availible to anyone with a computer and a modem connection. That one man is DJ Pretzel, and thanks to him the Edge office has been buzzing with various mixes from the likes of Space Harrier, Chrono Trigger, and Shinobi. As well as being clean in its design and easy to navigate, and will particularly user freindly for downloads, the site acts as a meeting point for other like-minded tinesmiths by hosting their work. Much of the content sounds raw, and some of it postitively grates (check out the Jazz reworking of the Super Mario Bros theme if you're feeling particularly masochistic) but rarely does it fail to raise a smile.
For the record I kinda liked the Jazz Plumber Trio. Anyway, congrats go out to David Lloyd. So head on over to OC Remix and catch up on your game music downloads.

    Frogacuda Boycott WIP
    (posted by Frogacuda - 16:06)

Richard Bannister has updated his page with news about the next release of his Macintosh Gameboy Emu Boycott. Here's what's been done so far:

    • Added a key for disabling the speed limiter temporarily.
    • Added cheat support. Boycott currently supports Game Genie, Pro Action Replay, and Game Shark codes.
    • Added smoothed video mode.
    • Added the ability to select colours (in B&W Gameboy emulation).
    • Added the ability to adjust the interrupt timing for those few troublesome games that require it.
    • Added an attempt at supporting Hi-Colour video (used by a few CGB games, for example Tomb Raider). It's not perfect, but it's pretty fast.
    • Fixed the bug that caused 4MB ROMs (including Tomb Raider) to crash the emulator.
  • Head to Richard's Software page for further news.
