fixo Family Emulator v0.02

Some might say it's weak-NES but this sure seems to be a NES week! FE, another Japanese NES emulator for DOS had it's second ever update released today. Don't expect another Nesticle just yet from this command prompt interfaced emu, though taking a look at the .cfg file reveals support for about 30 different controller inputs. lilac DC-Emu Project a Fake
(posted by lilac - 11:02)

That's right. Totally fake.

The screenshots are obviously doctored. There should be NO blur on an emu-in-progress screenshot. Some distrotion and other mistakes are possible, but nothing as severe as this. If anything the pictures should be clearer and simpler (less colors, less effects) than the real thing. And to top it off the DC is a 3D based graphics system, so there should be no square-shaped 2D graphics displayed like the ones in the first screenshot. Take a look at the nearest wall to you at an angle. You know its rectangular but from your point of view the far edge looks shorter than the near edge. It's simple depth perception that everyone learns about in art class. There's absolutely no explanation for a supposedly next-gen system emulator to display 3D graphics as perfect squares because that's a clear sign that there's no 3D rendering happening.

All the author has done is resample a game picture to a smaller resolution then resize it to a larger res. Try it on any image and you get the same effect.

    lilac Meka 0.55 RC1
    (posted by lilac - 19:30)

Our good friend Zoop has given birth to more Meka goodness, with the big thing being 3D glasses support. On to the low down on what's new:

    • Added builtin text viewer for the documentation.

    • Added both software and hardware 3-D Glasses mode:
      • Software mode let you play 3-D games by showing only images of a choosen side (left or right).

      • Hardware mode supports REAL Sega 3-D Glasses connected on your PC through the communication port!

    • Added CodeMasters cartridge mapper emulation (for both Master System and Game Gear modes).

    • Fixed sprite collisions in certain cases. The following Colecovision games are now perfectly playable:
      • Carnival (Bonus Level is ok)

      • Jumpman Junior (Ladders on level 3 are ok).

      • Pitfall 2 (No false hit on the third screen).

      • Venture.

    • Fixed hard pausing. You can now safely take screenshots when pausing and with messages shown on the screen, as they won't be shown on the screenshot.

    • Fixed loading of very small ROMs, which affected Tic Tac Toe on Colecovision, and maybe your very own demos programs.

    • Fixed the Eagle blitter which was not centered and showed garbage in some machines. Also fixed the default Eagle blitter configuration which limited speed to 30 FPS even on a very fast system. What a loss!

    • Plenty of minor fixes here and here.

    • Changed the key to save screenshots from F12 to PrintScreen.

    • Added F12 shortcut to hard pause emulation.

    • Added various name and checksum entrys, corrected existing ones. Should have noted out all Game Gear games running in Master System mode, fixed some Colecovision names and date (thanks to Luke2).

    • Added new GUI themes, and more pictures available from the homepage.

Everyone on the licensced users list knows where to find the new binaries.

    (posted by Aber - 14:38)

Howdy guys....I hate to do this, but unfortunately "real life" has made it impossible to continue my news posting position here at Emucamp. I'm in the Air Force, & am currently working on designing 3 websites as part of my job. With only myself & one other person working on the project, I simply have no spare time to devote to EC. It wouldn't be fair to myself, the rest of the EC staff, and you, the site visitors to try & stay on & do a half-assed job. So, I must resign, much to my dismay, as I had hoped to be with EC for a long period of time. I want to thank both Zoop & Frogacuda for the opportunity to work for the Best emu news site out there. These are two of the nicest guys involved in the scene, and the emu community would be a far better place if more people acted like them rather than people like Dave from you-know-where. Anyways, thanx for all the kind emails & such, it's been fun.

    (posted by Frogacuda - 13:27)

Marat Fayzullin has updated MasterGear, one of the oldest SMS/GG emulators in existance. Here's what's been done:

    • Added many new command line options: -sg1000, -fm/-nofm, -drums/-nodrums, -eeprom/-sram, -static/-nostatic.
    • Added YM2413 (OPLL) FM chip emulation (-fm/-nofm). It works best with MG-Windows midiOut sound drivers or MIDI soundtrack logging.
    • Added option to simulate SN76489 (PSG) noise channel with MIDI drums (-drums/-nodrums).
    • Added 93C46 serial EEPROM chip emulation (-eeprom/-sram). World Series Baseball and Majors Pro Baseball can save and load data now.
    • Added special SG1000 mode (-sg1000).
    • Added ability to load 8kB cartridges.
    • Added static color allocation option (-static/-nostatic).
    • Added separate handling for line and VBlank interrupts.
    • Changed the way interrupt enabling flags work.
    • Changed interrupt and display enabling flags in VDP.
    • Saved state (.STA) file format has changed.
    • Fixed mapper problem affecting state saving.
    • Sound API has been rewritten to accommodate MIDI instruments, dynamic instrument changes, drums, etc.
    • New sound and MIDI logging APIs have been integrated.
    • Added F6 to save emulation state in MG-Unix.
    • Changed Setup Panel GUI in MG-Windows.
    • Fixed window resizing when changing model in MG-Windows.
    • Fixed several problems with MG-Windows waveOut sound drivers.
A heft list of changes, but even still probably not enought to bring it up to par wit BrSMS or Meka. But unlike those emulators MasterGear is easily portable. The FreeBSD port is online, and the other ports should follow soon.

    Zoop Some thoughts..
    (posted by Zoop - 18:08)

As you have probably heard already, Sega shutted down several sites related to the Dreamcast warez scene recently, sending them a letter explaining their point and asking the site to be closed or else they will take legal actions against it. Well, EmuGaming.com has posted up a rebutal letter about it, with which I do not agree at all and that I'd like to comment.

I think the problem of people arguing the same way as the guy at EmuGaming does, is that they are either completely out of reality, or else full of hypocrisy. To be honnest, I am a bit sick of the general hypocrisy being around in the mind of several people in emulation, and that is why I wanted to comment about it.

The first fact is that only an extreme minor of copied games are for backup purpose, the second being that only an extreme minor of people do buy games they like after pirating them, and of course not in the case of all games. Oddly enough, it is usually people the most familiar with piracy and the scene going around that do buy games.

Any talking regarding making backup copy to preserve your own games is pure and simple hypocrisy, period. If you buy a car then burn it, it doesn't entitle you to steal a second car. And if ever one of your games stops working, then you'll be surely able to find a copy of it AFTER this unlikely event.

At my opinion, sites like dcisos.com or dcwarez.com dodid mainly promotes piracy, even if some or their content are not - who said development ? You must keep in mind that most development projects going around with free technical informations that is supposed to be given only under contract is also out of law, so are the cover and manual scans - which obvious purpose is to let you get backup copies of your covers which got accidentally burned, right?

This not a rent against piracy. I may have 400 or so ROMs in their original and legal cartridge form, I'm also sure I have ROMs from cartridges I don't own myself. Being honnest, I never have much cared for the law around video game piracy, so I bet are most of you. But I do follow my own rules (which of course are legally not valid) which are not to hurt anyone, and pirating games for recent and still selling systems is hurting, not Sega mainly, but developers behind those games who are humans and who need to feed their family. On the other hand, I'm convinced that spreading Master System ROMs is a non harming event for anyone and so I do it with a clean conscience. Between being a hypocrit pirate and a pirate, I prefer being a pirate. Long live Sega!

Of can make of this text what you will. And surely you can voice your opinion on our EmuGaming Article

    Frogacuda ElectrEm beta 4
    (posted by Frogacuda - 16:01)

This spiffy Acorn Electron emu with DOS, Linux, and Windows/DirectX ports has been updated to beta 4. This is a BIG update. Here's the full list:

    • reformatted and rewrote large parts of the source code. Most of the mess, and the increasing problems are now gone. Much easier for others to follow also.
    • closer again to correct Electron timing. I'm fairly sure modes 4-6 are now entirely correct, but I still haven't chanced upon the correct scheme for modes 0-3. Most games use modes 4-6.
    • fixes to the buffered sound engine. It now works quite well. In Windows for example, a best case latency of ~348ms has become an always case latency of ~46ms
    • optimised the palette changes in a great way. Which means a faster emulation of many programs, including BASIC in mode 2 (16 colour mode).
    • Small fix so that the load file path in the config file is not ignored in some versions of Windows
    • added configurable keyboard mapping. Two maps are currently available - physical/game (where PC keys are mapped to Electron keys via their relative locations, as in previous releases) and logical (where PC keys produce their correct symbols, regardless of location on an Electron keyboard). The keyboard maps reside files external to the main executable, so adding others and correcting those already provided shouldn't be hard. I'll add a proper menu for the next beta, hopefully. A side effect of this is that the 'enter GUI' and break key (still hard mapped) have been moved. See the docs!
    • improved fast tape loading - some (a small number) games load now that did not before, including but not limited to Bug Blsater, Sphere of Destiny, Psycastria and Ravenskull.
    • changed the way screen start address &0000 is interpretted, at least fixing three Bug Byte games (one about Ice Hockey, one about Cricket and another one I forget, but which is very visibly based on the same code set as the previous two). This may be a mistake - the accurate way may be to treat one of the screen start address bytes as a trigger, or it could be that the bits that 'must' be 0 in the low byte have effects when not 0, I shall have to investigate.
    • did away with the sudden quit approach to unknown opcodes. Now a GUI screen pops up informing you of what has happened with some fairly basic information and the option to carry on regardless or to reset the Electron.
added support for external GUIs with information passing via the config file
    • added *cat to the vDFS
added straight SSD and DSD loading to the disk drive mechanism. Both are assumed to be DFS types (i.e. 256 bytes/sector, 10 sectors/track, 80 tracks/side)
sound volume and overall speed is now adjustable
the code is now much more specific about what fails when it tries to init, so it should be easier for me to diagnose problems via e-mail. Its also much more stringent on making sure it starts okay in DOS & Linux.
    • the cheat related code has been removed. Due to optimisations made to the CPU core since its addition, placing persistant values in the zero page (or indeed the stack page) is now impossible which - without checking - would mean many games would not be cheatable in the expected way. The code will probably rematerialise next time I have a change of heart
    • some small memory allocation & deallocation bug fixes here and there and such like
Quite alot of work. Grab the new version now at the link.

    • Blanked out the incorrect engine sound, to save our poor ears for the time being...

      v0.017

    • Changed the scanlines method (to avoid vertical banding effects on cards which do bilinear filtering).

Zophar has left the site that he founded almost 4 years ago. His reasons are not scene related, but rather that he wants to focus on his education. From now on SwampGas will maintain Zophar's Domain. ZD has contributed alot to this scene, and for a long while it was the best emu site out there. It's sad to see Zophar go, but I agree that real life must be the priority. Emucamp wishes him the best of luck. Head to ZD to read his full departing post.

    Lopantu Laser Progress
    (posted by Lopantu - 19:29)

I have been working on Laser, trying to get the release out that was mentioned in JoseQ's Rumor Mill. I have some good news and some bad news regarding this release.

    First, the good news:
Laser has moved to it's own domain. It can now be reached at www.laseremu.com.

I have been working on adding more games. 4 Player Bowling has started to work.

    Now the bad news:
I've come across a stumbling block. I can't figure out how to emulate some of the controls. ie: The 2 player controls in Space Invaders, and the controls in 4 Player Bowling and Chess.

If you can help me with these problems, I would be greatful. I have looked through every source I could think of to no avail.

Thank you in advance for any help,

With this release it is now much easier to emulate an Amiga harddisk. Unfortunately the sound emulation problems on some systems have not been fixed. But if you are in Amiga emulation you should of course download this new release.

Of course we have also added other games like "Thromulus", "High Reflection" and many others. Please check our newspage for a detailed list of new additions.
Besides credits for further 200 Amiga games have been added. Also the muic section has been updated with many new soundtracks of Amiga games. The new Deliplayer for the PC is ideal to listen to these tunes because of some exotic sound formats. Coverscans (front and back) for another 30 classic Amiga games complete this update.

People at Demiforce opened a page about their upcoming translation project: Radical Dreamers for Super Famicom/Nintendo. Released in 1996, this is the real sequel to the famous Chrono Trigger, before Chrono Cross was released, and it covers points about the plot not in Chrono Cross. Demi (heading the project) is looking for experienced (read: experienced) Japanese speaker in order to help translating the game. He's also looking for a programmer familiar with "LZ77 compression method and its variant". I guess anyone with Super Famicom technical skill could figure it out with some goodwill and time. So if you are interesting in helping out with the translation of what is surely a good game (Super Famicom, 1996, hmm..), be sure to do so!

The post (rant) by the FPSE team yesterday understandably upset the PCSX team (and damn near the whole emu community), and prompted the PCSX team to call it quits. However, it appears that the positive reaction by the emu community towards PCSX (and some cooling off time)has helped reverse yesterdays decision to call it quits. Hopefully this will all just go away so we can continue to see these projects progress. Go to the link below for more info.

    Aber CMNES v0.12 a & b
    (posted by Aber - 21:45)

CMNES, a Win32 NES emu was updated today with a new release. Here's the what's new:

    • Running faster now due to some really small changes. The author of Handy told me that 95% of the gain comes from 5% effort and this is a good rule to work with when looking to improve speed.
    • Some palette problems finally fixed, smario and others are looking pretty good now!
    • Fixed transparency problems with spy vs spy and cmclogo. (code from version 0.6)
    • Added ability to swap from full screen to windowed using Ctrl+W (not perfect)
    • Fixed a few cosmetic interface bugs.
    • Fixed 8x16 sprites again! Gradius sprites now look correct.
    • Added mapper 2 but it is not working correctly, the x-men title screen is displayed and you can select your character but then it locks. Other titles don't even display the title screen! Thanks to Eli / Delta from the Pretendo team for help getting my head round bank swapping efficiently.

In addition, the author is asking for some help with the following:
    • Gamepad does not work with m-tetris, what is different about this title?
    • Why does mapper 2 not work? (very simple mapper) - I suspect the problem is not the mapper code.
    • I suspect that the title screen of smario makes use of mid hblank VRAM writes, can anyone confirm this?
    • Why does the drill in digdug display as a red block?

    Frogacuda Gameboy Advance Emulation!
    (posted by Frogacuda - 21:38)

Well no sonner did Nintendo flood the world with its GBA dev kits do we have not one, not two, but three working Gameboy Advance emulators! At least two are able to play the famed Yoshi's Story demo to some extent, the only real availible peice of software you'd want to run at this point.

GBAEmu: This emu which is being hosted at Gameboy advance Development is being coded by an anonymous author. It plays Yoshi's story, and shows sprites, but is still very early. Download it/read more here

FireFly's GBA Emulator/Debugger: This emulator, coded by Tim Schuerewegen, is currently the more advanced of the three it seems, but unfortunately it is not public. You can head to the homepage and check out some screens at the homepage.

IS-AGB-Emu: This is the third GBA emu, written by Intelligent Systems, but this one's in japanese (or another asian language I don't have the font for) so I really know nothing about it. Download it here.

I don't really know what to think of this. This, to my knowledge, marks the first time there has been a working public emulator of a system a full year before it's launch. You must admit, though... it is a very cool preview of what's to come.

    Aber FPSE Starts A War
    (posted by Aber - 22:52)

FPSE, the new PSX emu for several platforms, had rather odd update on their page today. This is what I'm talking about:

    • WOW... we make and all Other copy :-))
    • 1) Jackal (I think it's dead)
    • 2) Sope 0.4
    • 3) Pcsx
    • 4) ePSXe
    • And now????
What emulator do U want to make with our sources today?

Hmmmm.....hate to see these things flare up...however, a claim like that needs some proof in my book, and with _Demo_, one of the main coders for the ever popular SNES emu zSNES, being part of the ePSXe team, makes the claim a little hard to believe. The fallout from this? Well, PCSX, the recently released PSX emu had this to say at their homepage today:
I am in the diffucult position to anounce I am abandoning the Pcsx project since some lamers accused me of copying their sources (sounds familiar fpse authors?). Pcsx contains 100% clean code that was written from its authors (Nocomp,Shadow,Roor). If the Fpse team believes that what all we can do is losing our time to seeing their buggy sources, perhaps it's time to change their minds. I am sick to hear unbased accuses made by people that are in the PSX emu scene less than me.
If someone can claims that we "stole" something,it's PSEMU PRO, since we are useing its plugin system for which we had taken the permission to do. So after all these facts I made my mind to abandon the Pcsx project. The continuation of the project will be decided in a week or so, when will see how things are going. If the emu scene doesn't do something about this then count Pcsx off the PSX emus. The stupidity of some people is sometimes out of limits

It's a shame to see these developments, as the PSX emu scene was finally beginning to approach the same level of excitement & anticipation that we saw prior to Bleem's release. Hopefully this will soon die down, afterall, it IS just a hobby, right?

ClrMAME Pro, the popular rom auditing utility, updated it's homepage today with this info regarding the recent 1.8 release:

    • When using the MAME or the MAME DATFILE engine you should see 3 systems (Standard, NeoGeo, Nintendo Playchoice 10) in the scanner and the rebuilder ! If you only see "Standard" you should remove the file "_last.cmp" and restart ClrMamePro.
    • The progressbar doesn't work properly when doing a fastscan....Don't worry....It looks a bit weird but the scanner works correctly...It's just a display problem.

If you've encountered these problems with the current version, this should help ya out.

Some odd happenings over at the MAME WIP page today:

    • 13th September 2000, 20:35 UTC: The lifepod contained more surveillance video, giving more proof to the "Giant of Light" theory.
    • 13th September 2000, 19:48 UTC: One survivor has been found floating in a lifepod.
    • 13th September 2000, 17:14 UTC: Devastating new weather patterns have developed, causing massive floods and rains in the Asian region.
    • 13th September 2000, 14:20 UTC: Security video of the Antarctic happenings has been leaked. The only interesting frame of video was captured and sent to various newsgroups.
    • 13th September 2000, 11:56 UTC: Conflicting reports of the actual happenings circulate the Internet. Some claim that this is a revenge from various gods, but no proof has been provided.
    • 13th September 2000, 08:00 UTC: United Nations has issued an official press release. The reason of the catastrophy is a huge meteorite which hit the Antarctic over 10% the speed of light. Several countries are in a state of emergency.
    • 13th September 2000, 06:39 UTC: First satellite surveillance photos have been taken. This is the horrible truth that replaced what was previously a beautiful frozen continent. All in the Antarctic continent are presumed dead, body count in southern hemisphere countries' coastal areas rising.
    • 13th September 2000, 02:42 UTC: Enormous tidal waves are reported at south coasts of Australia and South America. Huge casualties estimated. Reason might be a huge meteorite impact on the Antarctic continent.

And what did all this lead to? Dunno, but at least some new drivers added some semblance of normalty to good ol' MAME. Here's what was (finally) added:

    • 13th September 2000: Nicola Salmoria added Macross II to the Bombjack Twin driver. Jürgen Buchmüller fixed some bugs in the new NES sound core.
    • 12th September 2000: Nicola Salmoria fixed the missing Macross background and merged it with the Bombjack Twin driver. Luca Elia added Blaze On to the Kaneko16 driver. Matt Conte submitted a NES sound core update, and it definitely sounds better now.
Sure is an interesting way to introduce a new update, eh? Check Here to see the pics which accompanied the previous story (and turn yer speakers up while yer at it :0)). You can also see pics of Macross II in action as well as some other cool screenies at the link below.

    Aber Emuloader 1.3.1
    (posted by Aber - 23:47)

Emuloader, the slick looking Win32 MAME frontend was updated from last week's release. This version is mainly to correct some bugs. Here's what's new:

    • Fixed the Categories Manager. It was not updated with the latest core
    • Added the resource files to the list (NEO GEO BIOS).
    • Playchoice-10 BIOS will be added when it's ready
    • Added a file with game sizes (in Kbits or Mbits
    • Select a game and look at the right side of status bar
    • Mode View is back again! (Large Icons, Small Icons,
    • List and Details) This feature is re-activated so Emu Loader can have real icons instead of those color pacman ones.
    • I'm planning to use MAMu_ icons
    • Disabled the filters option. This feature will be disabled until it's finished
    • Fix an "I/O Error" when trying to build a database and all .dat files are already created
    • Changed the favorites folder. Now all .fav files are in "resources\favorites" folder
    • If you have favorite lists, please, just copy them to this new folder
    • Updated file "el-readme.txt" with copyrights of all components used in the frontend

Also added were the following "Important notes":

    • Be sure to rebuild the database so Emu Loader can create the game sizes file.
    • Don't forget to take a look at the files "el-bugs.txt", "el-todo.txt", "el-readme.txt" and "el-listformat.txt" before use Emu Loader...
    • If you get an error when building a database or after the built, please delete all .dat files from "resources" folder and try again.
    • The XAudio DLL's do not need to be copied to the Windows folder. You can put the in the same folder as Emu Loader's executable.
    • Make sure that the file "categories.ini" is replaced with the new file from this release. It is updated to the latest MAME, 0.37 beta 7.

This is one the better frontends available & should definitely be checked out.
