fixo VirtuaNES 0.31
(posted by fixo - 08:38)

VirtuaNES, a Nintendo Entertainment System emulator for Windows, has been updated for the second time this weekend bringing it to v0.31. Here's what's new:

Addition:

  • The optional addition that doesn't do CRC checks such as a state, a disk image, a movie. Please turn a clause of "CrcCheck" less than [Emulation] of an INI file into 0. Can set it only with an INI file.
Change:
  • Because disk image save data form included malfunction, change data form.
Revision:
  • Fixed sprite 0 hit processing.
  • Fixed clear timing of sprite 0 hit flag and NMI flag.
  • The title which revised movement defectiveness and a quiver of a screen with a version of this time.

fixo z26 v1.50
(posted by fixo - 08:20)

z26, an Atari 2600 emulator by John Saeger for DOS platforms, has been updated to v1.50 with following changes:

  • Kinder gentler sound routines. Known to work better on some PCI audio cards and with audio built into some motherboards. Don't know if it is any better with XP though.
  • A vertically squished video mode that displays alternate scanlines. You can turn it on with the -h command line switch and it works with the linear videomodes (0 - 3). Although many games don't look good with it, it's the fastest video mode of all for games that look O.K.
  • With that, we've used up all of the command line switch letters. So we probably won't be adding too many new features to the DOS version of z26.

fixo retroDrive Release 3
(posted by fixo - 12:38)

Tim Meekins has updates retroDrive, his Sega Genesis & 32X emulator for Windows, to Release 3 with following notes:

"I’ve been busy working on retroDrive recently and have lots of things under development and coming soon. This update includes a number of bug fixes and a few newly broken games (soon to be fixed). I’ve also been able to tweak the speed of the emulator and it’s much faster now and I believe I can make a lot faster than this. And best for last, retroDrive now has 32X PWM sound!! If you’re computer is a bit too slow for the audio to sound correct, turn on the frame skip mode, though it could make the games harder to play.

fixo Jagulator goes Open Source
(posted by fixo - 12:37)

RealityMan is releasing the source code of Jagulator, the one and only Atari Jaguar emu for Windows. Below statement was posted at the official page:

After some consideration I have decided to release the source of Jagulator to the public. I have two main reasons for this decision: (a) I am finding it difficult to spend the time on this project that I would like, hence causing the development of Jagulator to suffer considerably. (b) I really want others to start developing Jaguar emulators not only for Windows but for other platforms too (e.g. Lunix, BeOS etc).

You might ask, "does this mean that the Jagulator project is over?" - simple answer NO!
It is continuing all the time, just not at the pace I or others would like.

The source to Jagulator v1.5.1 can be found on the Download Page. When extracting make sure you extract with directories so that the correct file structure is maintained. I have included te StarScream 0.26a object file with the source. If you wish to build your own version of this 68000 core then you can find the distribution at such sites as Zophar's Domain.

The only conditions I lay down on the use of this source code are as follows:

(a) If any part of Jagulator is used in any other Jaguar Emulator then do the decent thing and include a greet, thanks or other information that mentions the fact.
(b) Don't just recompile the code and release it as something else, thats just plain LAME !.
(c) Have Fun :) :) :)

Lopantu Modeler 0.9.2
(posted by Lopantu - 16:29)

Nice surprise for the weekend: both the Linux and Windows versions of Modeler, a Sega System 32 / Model 1 arcade emulator, have been updated to v0.9.2. Here's the full list of changes:

  • Fixed some V60 CPU core bugs that were afflicting Alien3 and Title Fight.
  • Fixed Z80 banking for Super Visual Football and Alien3. Both games now play correct sounds.
  • Changed EEPROM and savestate filenames to use the game name rather than the internal number. This allows us to add and reorder games in the future without causing strange problems. You should delete the old contents of your EEPROM folder before running this version to reduce clutter (the old files won't be used anymore).
  • Arabian Fight protection fixed (all 4 players are now playable).
  • Support for up to 4 joysticks (may not work properly until SDL 1.2.3 is released).
  • Hopefully fixed the problem with uncalibrated joysticks (it works for one up/left "wandering" joypad FF had around).
  • Fixed crash when pausing with sound disabled.
  • Second screen is cleared correctly in dual monitor mode (fixes test menus mainly). Thanks Tourniquet.
  • Fixed a sprite positioning bug (Sonic: Double Robotnik, ARF: ppl on carpets, Outrunners: stuff on the road). Thanks CoolBurn and Haze.
  • Fixed a rare hard-to-notice off-by-1-pixel sprite positioning bug (Alien3: energy bars).
  • Fixed Alien3 controls for player 1 (use the mouse, it works great!)
  • Fixed start and coin inputs for Alien3 (they're now wrong in the test menu but correct in the game).
  • Fixed color 0 masking with lineselection and scrolling. (RadRally/RadMobile background). Thanks Haze.
  • Fixed a bug in mouse steering (sometimes it was not detected correctly that the mouse had stopped).
  • Implemented experimental trackball support for Sonic (activate "mouse steering" to try it). Give it a shot if you have a trackball.
  • Fixed a desync bug in multiplayer (the eeprom and backram are not read anymore). Thanks Guile_Charlie.
  • Fixed Z-buffer out-of-range writes (Sonic: portion of background being clipped out). Thanks Torniquet.
  • Reordered game list to group games by type.
  • Alien3, Rad Mobile, and Hard Dunk promoted to "playable", Title Fight added as a "watchable" game (you can play it, but there are some serious graphics
    glitches).

Known problems: (do not waste time on the boards asking about these)

  • Controls do not work if you change the cabinet type from the default. This also happens on the real PCB because 2 player cabinets have a different input daughtercard than 4 player ones. Thus, you must use the US ROM sets to play GA2 or Spiderman with 4 players. Also, you must not change the US sets to "2 player" in the test menu.
  • Sound is not correct in Hard Dunk.
  • The pitch (field for those who don't speak futbol) is not drawn properly in SVF.
  • SVF appears to lock on a black screen after the intro. Not true, just insert a coin to continue.

    fixo MIMIC WIP
    (posted by fixo - 17:34)

The official site of MIMIC, the generic hardware emulator, has been updated over the last days with following Work In Progress news:

  • 25 September 2001: Well, what a week? I found a major stuff up in the SN76489 code. The frequencies I was generating were way too low. The result being that you couldn't hear half the sound. This is fixed along with the noise channel being emulated now. I have also added the option to turn the sound off. I also changed the video mode of the menu to 320x200 (for now). A few 'little' quirks have emerged in the emulation. I will fix this tonight or tomorrow and then do an 'as-is' release :)

  • 27 September 2001: Those 'little' quirks seemed to be holding the code together as, once they were fixed, everything hit the fan :(. I have fixed things up a lot and even fixed the line interrupts on the SMS/SGG/SystemE code up a bit. I also changed the menu background. Release soon as it is stable again.

Daphne, the world's only multiple laserdisc arcade emulator, has been updated to 0.99.3a. Here's what's new:

    • YUV hardware acceleration was not working for dragon's lair, space ace, or thayer's quest in windows. This should be fixed now.
    • Multiple mpeg files were not working with daphne either, although just 1 big mpeg file worked fine. Multiple mpeg files should now work, so you don't have to have just 1 big file anymore.
    • Super Don sound samples have been redone (thanks Warren) and now sound better.

Vera Lanpher has also released a utility which allows you to convert the VOB files on the Dragon's Lair DVD-ROM (not the DVD Video Version) to MPGs supported by Daphne.

    Lopantu bleemcast! News
    (posted by Lopantu - 16:54)

Randy Linden, the developer of bleem! and bleemcast! has said that he dropped the final masters for MGS and TK3 off yesterday at the facility. This means that bleemcast! for Metal Gear Solid and Tekken 3 are going through their final pressing, and should be released into stores soon.

The reason for the wait was a last-minute issue with MGS for the Japanese versions. Bleem has decided to go ahead and master MGS for US/Canada/Europe seperately from the Japanese versions.

Japanese versions of MGS, including Integral, will not be compatible with the bleemcast! MGS pak for US/Canada/Europe, but the disc will run on Japanese machines.

Similarly, the Japanese bleemcast! MGS pak will not be compatible with US/Canada/Europe, although it will run on any DC.

Mastering for BOTH titles (MGS and TK3) should be complete by mid-to-late next week, and manufacturing will begin immediately after. Manufacturing is VERY quick, and usually requires three-to-four days for finished packages.

Direct online sales should begin early next week, and shipping will begin as soon as the CDs have been pressed.

Full details will be posted at the bleem! homepage in the next few days once the production has started.

      • CDD (70%)

    • Added the possibility to force software blit for Fullscreen "Normal" and "Double" render mode.
      • This option can be enabled/disabled only by key-shorcut (see in the shorcuts section) because almost people don't need to use it, try it only for speed issue.

    • Undocumented scroll mode implemented.
    • Undocumented plan size mode implemented.
    • Rewrite the VDP IO control part, little speed increase.

    (posted by fixo - 04:48)

Modeler, a System 32 / Model 1 arcade emulator, has been updated to 0.9.1 with following changes:

    Win32 specific

  • Rewritten DirectSound driver (with inspiration from Final Burn) that fixes the major sound-related slowdowns people were seeing. Also behavior is much better when the framerate is below 60 (sound will no longer break completely up except on extremely slow computers).

    Linux specific

  • Changed "Multi32 second monitor" option to the more useful "Multi32 dual screen". This is also consistent with the Win32 version.

    Common improvements

  • On-screen message added when the mouse grab/ungrab toggle is used.

  • Keyboard steering for the driving games added.
  • Frameskip and autoframeskip added.
  • GA2 black screen bug when fighting Death Adder fixed.
  • Sound clipping in the F1 games and Burning Rival improved.
  • Speed throttle added for no sound mode.

Known problems: (do not waste time on the boards asking about these)

  • Sound can be screwy in the type B and Multi32 games, especially Super Visual Football and Hard Dunk
  • The pitch (field for those who don't speak futbol) is not drawn properly in SVF.
  • SVF appears to lock on a black screen after the intro. Not true, just insert a coin to continue.
  • Due to incomplete protection emulation, Arabian Fight only works with one player.
  • Control isn't great in the driving games or Alien3.

Nebula, a CPS2 emu for Windows, has gotten a bugfix update with version number 1.91a today following yesterday's release. Here's the fixes:

  • Fixed macro support that was broken in previous version.
  • Fixed a stupid bug in default control, hotkeys and macros that prevented it from working.
  • Fixed the size and crc for the NG-LO.ROM file, it should be 64k (65536 bytes) and CRC: E09E253C.

Also the author says he forgot to mention an experimental option called -blade15, which generates 15Khz output signals (for arcade monitors) on Trident Blade3D video cards. You'll need the BLADEIO.VXD file from the Blade15khz package in blade15_24.zip (mirror because the original page is about to disappear).

  • Dialog box "Unknown IRQ index (11)" would appear after short time (due to fake IRQ getting triggered by accident)
  • Console file transfer gave a lot of CRC errors while there should be none (due to calling interrupt handler while it was still busy)
  • Changed the way 8-bit timer0/1 interrupts are handled (greatly decreased the number of triggered IRQ / sec)

  • Lopantu Modeler 0.90
    (posted by Lopantu - 14:21)

Modeler, the only playable System 32 and preliminary Model 1 emulator has been updated to 0.90. There are many changes for this release, so here they are:

    Win32 specific:

  • All-new frontend GUI
  • Kaillera Internet/LAN play support for some games

    Linux specific:
  • Improved frontend GUI
  • Now statically linked against everything except SDL and it's dependancies, so the binary should work on many more systems.

    Common improvements:
  • Completely new graphics engine with tilemap and palette caching, z-buffering, etc.
  • Sourced linescroll, rowscroll, alpha blending, and window effects are now supported.
  • RAM based sprites, indirect palette/priority lookups, and other fun tricks are now fully supported.
  • Correct graphics, colors, and priorities in most situations.
  • Shadow support
  • Perfect audio in type A games, improved in type B but not correct
  • Cool audio filters and effects.
  • Alpha blending
  • System 32 Multi support, including sound
  • Model 1 sound support (only works for Virtua Racing right now)
  • Improved V60 CPU core for better compatibility
  • On-screen status readout added
  • Known problems: (do not waste time on the boards asking about there)
  • Sound can be screwy in the type B and Multi32 games, especially Super Visual Football and Hard Dunk

  • fixo MIMIC WIP
    (posted by fixo - 19:35)

Mike Beaver posted a new WIP update on his MIMIC page:

The SH2 core is about 85% complete and is running the Saturn BIOS. It seems like its waiting for an interrupt or something as Video RAM is not even touched so I don't have any screenshots to show :(
Anyways, it seems like that won't make it in the next release (1.09). I have fiddled around with the sound emulation but it still doesn't sound right. I mean SMS sounds OK, but the SystemE in comparison to MAME seems like only one chip is being written to ...hmmm...
A few things that WILL be in the next release are
    1) An option to turn the sound emulation off. This is for troubleshooting with non-Adlib compatible cards
    2) A different video mode for the menu. This is for the non-VGA compatible cards which are starting to appear on the market.

A little tidbit here to Saturn emu authors: I found out that the BIOS version number is located 2048 bytes into the BIOS. It appears as a string like this...
    BTR_AAAABBCCCCCC
    Where "BTR_" stands for BooTRom
    AAAA = Version number eg. "1.00", "1.01"
BB = Unknown but best guess is either checksum or region
CCCCCC = Date is YYMMDD format
I also noticed this in the Titan BIOS, at the same location, but the "BTR_" is "STVB". The versions I have are (if you have others, get in contact with me)...

    Saturn
    BTR_1.00D1940921
BTR_1.000U941115 - "Sleep" routine moved to begining of ROM
    BTR_1.0191941228 - Copyright changed from "1994" to "1994, 1995"

    ST-V Titan
    STVB1.13J0950425 - Japanese
    STVB1.13U0950425 - USA

    Lopantu Mimic WIP
    (posted by Lopantu - 22:32)

The multi-arcade as well as multi-console emulator, MIMIC, has had a WIP update on it's site:

The SH2 core is coming along VERY nicely. It now is running the Saturn BIOS but is getting stuck in a loop after setting up RAM. I also am trying out the STV Titan BIOS and this too is looping like crazy (at an earlier point, though). This may be a bug in one of the branches ...hmmm... I can't wait until some of the 2D video starts to get used. I must thank Gareth for the STV BIOS and the STV roms that I probably won't be able to get stuck into for a while.
The release will still happen this week, but it would be nice to see the Saturn display something first :)
PS: Anybody got Saturn BIOS 1.01-PAL ?

    Lopantu z26 v1.48
    (posted by Lopantu - 22:26)

The Atari 2600 emulator, z26, has been updated. Here's what's new:

  • Screen capture now works in all video modes. If you hold down the = key, you get a fairly continuous stream of pcx files.
  • New fast video modes. These are accessed with the -e command line switch. This allows the Mode-X routines to do 32-bit accesses to the video card. On my computer this more than doubles the speed of the emulator when running in these modes. Unfortunately, they may not work on all video cards. The -e command line switch also enables tall and narrow 160 pixel video modes for modes 0, 1, 2, and 3. These are very fast modes, and they give your games a Vectrex like feel.
  • Added support for a couple of new ROM images.
  • Fixed a stack overflow bug in the GUI.
  • Thanks to Eckhard Stolberg for help with this version. I did not suspect that so much more speed could be had from the video system.

    Lopantu Sintendo WIP
    (posted by Lopantu - 19:03)

The home page for SNES emulator for Dreamcast, Sintendo, has been updated with a progress report. Here is what the author has finished so far:

  • Preliminary sound has been added, but has been taken out because he's grown quite frustrated at it and want to work on a few other things for the moment.
  • To make up for the lack of sound, Sintendo can now play a wav file, and has menu music. He may also add an option to continue playing menu music once the SNES has begun playing, as though you were listening to a CD while playing a video game.
  • Background bitmap emulation is near completion, and should certainly be expected with the next release.
  • Background bitmaps lead an interesting transition of using the same (or similar) code to render transparencies using the Dreamcast hardware which would be faster than in the Snes9x software

The author will be updating the page later with progress news and a timeline for release.

Thanks to Sega Dreamcast Emulation for the news.
