Frogacuda Final Burn 0.052
(posted by Frogacuda - 18:52)

Dave updated hit Sega 16-bit arcade emu with a minor tweak:

  • Added a rom path variable 'szAppRomPath' to the cfg\finalburn.ini config file. Final Burn will search in this directory for rom zip files. By default it will search in the folder 'roms'.
Ok, so it's not G-Loc or road emulation, but it is a feature I've been wanting. So it's still worth a download.

fixo Java Arcade Emulator updated with sound
(posted by fixo - 12:47)

Great news comes from Norbert Kehrer's JAE, the online Java Arcade Emulator. He managed to make the first really emulated sound now! As he would say it:

The Namco sound chip used in Pacman, Ms. Pacman and Pengo has now been emulated in Java. This time this was not done by only playing pre-recorded samples of the game, but by constructing the sound for the Namco 3-voice sound generator in real-time.

The result is not very nice, when compared to MAME (due to the limitations ofstandard Java). But maybe I can improve the concept in the future.
"Sounds" like a very nice improvement to me! Head over to the JAE to some serious classic gaming with even sound now for the games above.

fixo U64Emu Fix

The newly released U64Emu, running Killer Instinct arcade, received it's first bugfix. According to the page, this one should fix the draw problem and it might help some of the other problems people have had. Also another tip from the page:

If you are having problems with Killer Instinct games saying "draw" without you getting to play do the following: Delete "ki.dat" after using the emulator so that it remakes that file everytime. This should fix the problem.

fixo KIAME turns into U64Emu and has first release!
(posted by fixo - 18:52)

The highly anticipated KIAME, the Killer Instinct arcade emulator for Windows, was finally released today. The name of the emu has changed into U64Emu, which stands for the Ultra64 hardware found in the cabinets of these series. As it's the first release, here's the introduction post straight from the official homepage:

This emulator was formally known as KIAME but author RCP is hoping that eventually the emulator can be expanded to play others games based on similar hardware to Killer Instinct. This emulator is for Windows and is very fast! It has no sound currently but maybe someone can add it later on. Enjoy :)

U64Emu emulates the hardware that Killer Instinct, Killer Instinct 2, and other games run on. So far it only runs Killer Instinct but if there is a lot of interest in this emulator it might be made open source in order to add support for other games.

Seems that arcade emulation is rocking like never before so head over to U64Emu page right now to download this masterpiece!

Zoop SMS Check 0.2
(posted by Zoop - 18:30)

I have written a small and simple utility to display checksum out of a Master System ROM, taking account of some header informations that previous checksummers would ignore, and thus giving a good checksum on some game that are marked as bad in some listings. Also keep in mind the SMS internal checksum does not always cover the whole data range so a good checksum in certain case doesn't means everything in the ROM is ok, but in most cases with ROMs equal or smaller than 256 kb, it is reliable.

fixo More MIMIC WIP news
(posted by fixo - 14:12)

The official page of Mimic, the Generic Hardware emulator, has been updated once again with some WIP news:

"Added SMS line interrupts (rewroted). Lots more SMS stuff working now. I started checking out DJGPP and managed to get the FIRE code compiled without too many dramas. Problem is it almost made me sick (literaly) because it is too damn quick :) The EXE is quite large for such a simple program, but what a trade-off! And this is WITHOUT any of the optimisation options turned on! Needless to say that all development of Mimic is now completly on hold while I convert the rest of the code. Expect a BIG performance boost."

fixo Mimic news
(posted by fixo - 15:32)

The official Mimic page -temporarily at another URL- has been updated with some WIP news:

"I changed the GUI to allow the user to just type the first letter of the menu entry to jump to the first match. This is pretty much standard in windows (ie. I got sick of all that scrolling when I was testing). I also changed the SMS VDP to be in 320X200 mode to allow me more room down the side for debug. I may allow this as an alternate video mode in 1.05. I fixed the crud that was appearing at the top of the SMS VDP. It seems that the first 28 lines after the vblank are not counted, thus scanline 28 is counted as scanline 0. I also allowed more than 256 scanlines per frame, although only the first 256 will be drawn. I also am going to try using DJGPP as the 32 bit compiler as the licensing quirks that I didn't agree with have been lifted in the current version (for a while actually). I will try and compile a simple graphical program like the starfield or fire (flamefield ?) to see if I can make it do the do."

Though the hosts over at EmuHQ reported the "Cannot find core.dll" error message everyone is getting has been fixed and a new release (fix) should be available soon. In a hour? Today? Tomorrow? Keep an eye on the official page to be there to grab it as it comes.

FreezeSMS, a brand new Sega Master System emulator for Windows introduced here only some posts ago, received already another update. In the meantime, the project moved over to a new host, being at Emulators Unlimited. New in this release, called build 69:

  • Increased (Talk about 400% increase) Speed, should be easily playable on a pentium 100
  • Increased Compatibility: A few bugs from last version should be gone, also a few more games are now playable which should have been in the last version. ie Bubble Bobble

fixo One flew over Pac-Man’s Nest
(posted by fixo - 13:42)

Over the last year or so, sometimes emulation got into a bad daylight cause of certain legal issues and more law related difficulties in which I'm not an expert. Some people are though, such as the publisher of "One flew over Pac-Man’s Nest", which he describes as "An Authoritative Study on Emulators and the Problems that they Pose in Relation to Intellectual Property Rights". Not the easiest read around, but defenitely worth to check out.

fixo FreezeSMS
(posted by fixo - 17:27)

A new Sega Master System emulator for Windows, called FreezeSMS, had it first public release today. Since this emu is still in early stages, what better way is there to introduce is using the authors own words:

FreezeSMS is a Sega Master System emulator for Windows 95/98. It utilizes DirectX 7 for Graphics, Input, and Sound(When thats added). Some of you might be wondering why the emulator is so slow, and well thats a good question. You will probably need a P2-500 to run this emulator full speed at the moment. I think this is partly due to the fact that I'm mixing C(Marats Z80 core) andC++(Windows and DirectX) and the function overhead with doing so. Also there is another way I could speed it up, by adding a tile cache, but I havn't got that far yet as this emulator is only 1 week old :).
Fans of the Sega 8-bit machine are advised to go to the official page right now for the download!

Frogacuda ePSXe goodies
(posted by Frogacuda - 20:52)

Well I finally got the chance to sit down and play with the new greatly anticipated free PlayStation emulator, ePSXe, and I must say it delivers. To varying extents ePSXe delivers on the promises of bleem!, VGS, and FPSE. It outshines bleem! is both speed and graphics enhancing effects. the compatibility (with the 10 or so games I tested) is about on par with VGS, and it's free. For a quick comparison I took a shot of Crash Bandicoot running under ePSXe, and VGS. The difference is pretty remarkable.
Alot of people (myself included, I'll admit it) have had trouble getting ePSXe running. So to help smotth things along PSXEmu has put up a very nice installer fully loaded with all the plugins/frontend/stuff you need to get running. They have also put up a useful FAQ, along with a screenshot section and more. Head on over and check it out.
Oh, and of course the ever elusive BIOS files. I wouldn't forget those. Nab them here.

Dave, never one to keep a secret for long, has put up another teaser screenshot of his latest work... Unfortunately, the sound and graphics ROMs haven't been dumped yet, so it's a little sparce to look at, but at Dave's usual rate of progress we will be playing Rail Chase in no time. While I never considered this one of my all-time favorites, it's definately one of the mre memorable arcade games from the early 90's. I'm eager to play it again.

fixo Final Burn v0.041
(posted by fixo - 10:19)

A new version of Final Burn has been released. This cool arcade emulator running Sega games such as the Afterburners, Power Drift and Galaxy Force II is now up to v0.041. Here's what's new:

  • Fixed the energy display in Galaxy Force II
  • Fixed the speed display in Power Drift.
  • Added sound support to Thunder Blade.
  • Updated DirectDraw code to DirectX 7.
  • Added nDSoundSegCount to the finalburn.ini file. If you want you can lower the value for a faster sound effect response time. You can raise the value if the sound 'echoes' or breaks up.
  • Slightly changed the flag bAppUseVidMemory to nAppUseVidMemory, with -1 meaning don't specify video or system memory. It's the default. Hopefully video card drivers will pick the fastest option!

Frogacuda Ages 0.22a Borg
(posted by Frogacuda - 02:58)

Working SegaCD emulation. Yep, the race to emulate SegaCD has ended, and the surprise last minute enty has taken it. We shouldn't be too surprised though, considering Quintesson is the only only one to successfully reverse engineer the Sega 32X (GENSX author Tim Meekins is an ex-32x coder). Here's the full list of changes:

New GFX render: supports rasterFX and now runs Genesis games at full-speed with no frameskip on a 350 MHz PC.
  • Compatibility boost: numerous Genesis games + Afterburner 32X, Fifa 96 32X, and Primal Rage 32XRAR'd file support
  • In-memory IPS patch loading (somebody please test this and inform me if it works right or not)
  • Sega CD driver
So what's missing? Well you can get everything you need at Eidolon's Inn. The emu will run real sega CDs, copied Sega CDs, and ISOs. You can take advantage of the special set of ISOs being offered at Sega Xtreme on some real, old fashioned http space, too! Falls into place, nicely, eh?

fixo nester public beta 2
(posted by fixo - 13:23)

Over the last weeks, emu pages were flooded with news concerning unofficial updates of nester, a nice open source NES emulator for Windows. For the first time in months, the official nester was updated with following message from the author:

Most of the changes from the unofficial version of nester will be rolled into nester, and will be included in an official release as soon as nester reaches a stable state again. If you want an experimental, cutting-edge version of nester, use an unofficial copy.If you want a version that's more likely to be stable, use the official version.

Frogacuda Final Burn 0.040
(posted by Frogacuda - 15:51)

This is the updaye many have been waitng for... Galaxy Force II now runs under Final Burn. But wait! There's more!:

  • Galaxy Force II!
What was up with the GF palette? Turn out there's a palette reference into an EXTRA palette (a possible 32768 colors), which in turn goes into the normal main palette (16384 colors), which in turn goes into the GLOBAL palette (4 million colors). The word 'nightmare' comes to mind, but it's sorted now! Power Drift almost totally ignores this 'feature' (apart from the spinning wheels), which is why that worked okay.
  • Added a new option for Auto-Centering Keyboard!(Thanks, Dave! ;) To use, first you must load up the game you wish to play, bring up the menu panel if it isn't already visible (press Escape), click Input, and then click Keyboard (Auto-Centering). It works really well with Galaxy Force II, Power Drift (in-game anyway!), ThunderBlade and Out Run. For After Burner however, it's much easier to aim if you select the normal Keyboard option.
      * In fact, Keyboard with Auto-Centering works so well that I have also made it the default. People who want to use a joystick should now configure games by clicking Input and then Joystick 1 (only need to be done once per game).* Note, now F = Burners, G = Brakes (or you can use A and Z if you are using Joystick 1 2-button or Keyboard.)
  • Galaxy Force Hardware uses a powerful tilt/rotate effect, which isn't emulated yet.
  • Lots of glitches - don't e-mail, I know about them!
  • Galaxy Force II uses a LOT of sprites in the tunnel sections (each wall has about 50-100 sprites). It slows down my computer, so you probably do need a P3 this tim (for the tunnel sections anyway). A shame.
Go, Dave, go! Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to spend some quality time with this emu right now.

fixo Jagulator news
(posted by fixo - 18:26)

The official Jagulator page, home to the only known for real Atari Jaguar emulator for Windows, has been updated today with the following news:

Jagulator has been progressing well over the last few days and it is near fully running its first demo. JDC (Jaguar Development Club) Demo v1, coded by Lars Hannig, now displays the title screen and zooms into view the JDC Logo. There are couple of minor bugs to quash and then the demo will fully run with Joypad support also. The running of demo's is new functionality that I have added into the debugger. Whereas a standard game cartridge will load itself according to the embedded program counter etc, demo rom loads need to specifically identify the address space they occupy.
Author RealityMan also put up some screenshots of the above mentioned demo running in Jagulator.

fixo Sintendo news concerning release later on
(posted by fixo - 07:26)

Sintendo, the WIP SNES emulator for Dreamcast, will have it's first early beta preview version -which won't really work- released today. That's right, the author has been working very hard and promised a release by today and he's going to keep his word. Some things might run in it and possibly show graphics but please don't expect miracles. Here are some excerpts from the latest news straight from the Sintendo homepage:

Sintendo beta v0.01 does not work. If you burn it, don't even think about complaining to me about it. Constructive critism is very welcome, but don't start a "man Sintendo sucks" rampage on the open internet just because a very early beta version doesn't work...because it doesn't and I told you that. The release will be posted some time before 12 midnight EST. It will include a menu and a reasonable frameskip will be implemented (resonable meaning all games will run at full speed, but some of the slower games will be noticably jurky). Almost every element of Sintendo is slated to be improved in later versions. Release by midnight; barring an unbelievable miracle, it won't work.
Check the page for the full news and who knows, be there right at the moment of the release.

Frogacuda Power Drift ROMs
(posted by Frogacuda - 01:15)

At long last we have a Power Drift emu, but what good is it without a good ROM set? I don't notmally do this, but I thought it's be nice to upload a rom set since it is just such a great game. And despite what Dave put in his readme, a Pentium 3 is not nearly nescessary. It runs full speed with sound on my k6-2/350 (should get similar performance on a P2/266). Anyway, download it here.

Frogacuda Final Burn 0.030, 0.031
(posted by Frogacuda - 20:42)

This release is a big one (at last). This sega arcade emu for Windows now emulates Power Drift! Here's the full changelog:

  • Added support for the Triple-68000 game Power Drift! You need a very fast PC to run this game fullspeed (a Pentium 3).
  • Sound support for Power Drift (the easiest part believe it or not!)
  • It is very playable on a Pentium 3, but...
    • ...there are many glitches all over the game.
    • I've also noticed that the whole display doesn't tilt.
    • I have noticed all the problems, so please don't report any to me (otherwise I'll be reading my e-mail forever)!
    • Unfortunately Galaxy Force itself is not working yet at all. Since I couldn't get anywhere with Galaxy Force, I decided to go ahead with Power Drift emulation without it, to see if it might shed any light on what is wrong with Galaxy Force. Unfortunately it hasn't yet.

  • Modified the After Burner HW so that the controls are read 'properly' using interrupts rather than just inserted into memory (cheers to Phil from the MAME team for noticing this!). For the user, you'll see no difference, but the emulation is more accurate.
  • Fixed that occasional "vertical banding" problem that JoseQ and some others were having in the scanlines mode - it wasn't anything to do with bilinear filter after all!
Quite a hefty update indeed. If ever there was a cue to upgrade this would be it. Make a mad dash for the homepage!

UPDATE:Does he ever sleep? 0.031 is now out, fixing the difficulty setting in Power Drift. Download now!

fixo UltraHLE page
(posted by fixo - 17:24)

Last week we saw the real truth behind EmuJag, which almost brought the whole idea behind Atari Jaguar emulation in very bad daylight, right till RealityMan released a development alpha of Jagulator to prove all others wrong. Everyone knows RM is also the man behind the cancelled N64 emu UltraHLE. However, the official UltraHLE page seems to be back online now. What's strange about it, check it and compare it to the former "official" page of the fake EmuJag emu and you'll see.
