Roni FCE Ultra 0.71
(posted by Roni - 04:48)

I just noticed today that on the 28th a new FCE Ultra was brought upon this earth for us all to enjoy. Here is the new stuff:

  • Fixed a 6502 emulation bug that was causing some Koei games (ex: Nobunaga's Ambition, Genghis Khan) to not work.
  • Extensive PPU/CPU timing adjustments.
  • Fixed support for iNES mapper 40.
  • Added support for the following UNIF boards(prefixes omitted):
    • ETROM
    • ELROM
    • EWROM
  • Fixed a few bugs in the UNIF code.
  • Added support for loading and saving cheat files and an interface to search for/add/delete/list cheats.
  • Fixed a few minor bugs in the Windows DX code.
Binaries have been made available for Windows and Linux (SVGAlib) and somehow I managed to get me a SDL binary to compile from the available source, so go pick it up at the homepage.

fixo JAE adds Atari Tetris
(posted by fixo - 03:37)

Norbert Kehrer has added one of the best arcade games ever to JAE, the Java Arcade Emulator. Here is the release note:

"Tetris, made by Atari Games in 1988.

Some nice additions to the classic game idea and a huge number of different levels make this Tetris version one of the most enjoyables.

The emulator does not perfectly emulate all of the graphics, because the Tetris machine used a dynamic color pallette. To compensate for this, a real-time emulation of Atari's famous "Pokey" sound chip was added, so that you can listen to the cool russian-style tunes, that Tetris plays with its two Pokey chips."

Roni NJ speaks and new Neo Geo CD Emulator v0.3.0 released
(posted by Roni - 20:28)

And I quote:

" NeoGeo CD Emulator version 0.2.6 or later requires "original CD-ROM" or "CD-ROM image which is completely same as the original CD-ROM". If you are using illegal copy which downloaded from internet, you can't play it with my emulator. I don't want to support those illegal copies, please use other emulator."

Apparently my post below is false, Daemon Tools must not be what I believe it is, oh well. Since the system itself cannot tell the difference between a copied cd or a real one, I find it hard to say the emu can. I'm curious to actually test this now. Update to follow.

Update: To my surprise the emulator does in fact play my original games, but does not play my 'backups'. Quite impressive. Seeing as my console even plays my 'backups', I applaud NJ's efforts against piracy ;)

Roni BeOS, Linux and Win32 SDL emu ports galore!
(posted by Roni - 20:20)

On some more of my travels online, I came across updates of three SDL emulator ports of BoyCott Advance (v0.22b R3), NeoPocott (v0.38b R2.1) and Handy (v0.82 R1). Win32 releases of BoyCott Advance and NeoPocott will be the last one made available by the SDL team, because they would like to focus on UN*X OSes. From what the site claims all releases sport new gfx code, so by most clues some of us should get speed-ups in emulation. Now I do not know what version of SDL they are compatible with but I'd take a guess at SDL v1.2 as being your most compatible choice. Good job nwagenaar & caz. Now for some testing ;)

Roni NeoGeo CD Emulator ver.0.2.9
(posted by Roni - 14:54)

NJ seems to have been hard at work on his Neo Geo CD emulator for Windows lately. Upon visits to the homepage I notice a few different applications available for download. Namely, a new UOMAME32j which seems to support Neo Geo CD games on it also (or has fixes to his emulation core which were learned through CD emulation progress). And also Daemon Tools which seems to be a set of tools to emulate a cdrom drive for your images (ISO + MP3) of Neo Geo CD games, for use with the aformentioned emulator(s).

fixo Meka 0.60
(posted by fixo - 07:39)

The latest version of Meka, the multi-machine emulator for DOS and probably the best Sega Master System emu around, has now also been made available to non-registred users by EmuCamp's Zoop. Here are the changes for v0.60:

  • Improving timing in Z80 core.
  • Fixed voices that weren't ok (Alex Kidd: the Lost Stars..). Voices in many many games were tested, finally marked them as 'Ok' in the compatibility list.
  • Due to timing improvments, now Space Harrier [50 Hz version] has correct glitches (like on a real system) when running in NTSC mode. It is now configured to automatically use PAL/SECAM by default.
  • Removed the need of specific IPeriod setting for some Codemasters games, meaning that they will now run even if you delete MEKA.NAM.
  • Added sample accurate VGM logging, allowing to log voices. The option was previously grayed, it is activated now that all voices are Ok.
  • Updated to VGM version 1.01, to include original TV type information (NTSC or PAL/SECAM) in the file, allowing to play at a different rate.
  • Fixed minor sprite masking bug affecting scrolling games in certain conditions. Evander Holyfield Boxing (Game Gear) was ffected.
  • Added support for Coleco Vision header/footer in order to load the newly released "Pac Man" and "Dig Dug" ROMs from CGE 2001.
  • Fixed a minor bug when loading an in-game savestate from the BIOS.
  • Fixed file loader sorting so that if present, ".." is always on top.
  • Added/fixed entrys to the checksum and compatibility lists.
  • Added two Sonic themes by H Hog. (uncomment to use in GUI)

  • Added new game : Sailor Moon.

  • Added dynamic graphics list modes for most graphics drivers: vga, modex, vesa (1 to 3), svgalib, fbcon, dga2, directx (all fullscreen drivers). This give you every available mode in the Screen Setup dialog when you change the depth or the scanlines. This also select for you the best video mode available keeping your options (scanlines, pixel double...) for every game you load.
  • Fixed music tempo and sound effects in psykio games (gunbird, sengoku ace, and battle k road).
  • Made the music acceleration in toaplan2 games optional (Set fast_tp2_sound to 0 in raine.cfg if you don't like it)
  • Added a cache for solid sprite to get a 20-30% increase in speed for mazinger and most toaplan2 games (batrider...).
  • Added speed hacks to every cave games : a little faster on slow machines, and animations smoother on fast machines!
  • New palette update function for 8bpp modes for Windows 9x fullscreen modes, and linux fbcon. This function reduces the cpu time for palette update to 0% !
  • Fixed a last bug in hiscores (hopefully !) : when loading a 2nd game in the gui, the hiscores of the 2nd game were erased !!!
  • Added region codes to drtopel.

fixo CaPriCe32 v3.00
(posted by fixo - 19:23)

CaPriCe32, an Amstrad CPC home computer emulator for Windows, was updated to v3.00 with following release notes:

  • Version 3.00 is a complete rewrite in C. Hence the major jump in version numbers. This also marks the first occasion of a Windows native version - hopefully any audio/video/control problems users might have had with the previous DOS versions are now a thing of the past!
  • This is still very much a 'new beginning': not everything is back up to the old standard in user-friendliness. Rest assured, I'm working on it...
  • Things that are currently missing/broken: full-screen support, palette in 256 colour mode, FDC scan commands, FDC overrun condition, tape emulation, screen centering, sound accuracy

fixo Snes9x Developers Journal
(posted by fixo - 17:14)

Gary of Snes9x, home of the famous Super Nintendo emulator, has updated the Developers Journal section. Here's a bit regarding the Snes9x development:

"I've started implementing OpenGL hardware-accelerated SNES graphics rendering to Snes9x. Currently, even if you select the OpenGL output image filter, Snes9x renders the SNES game image using 100% software only, which is very CPU intensive; its only the final copy-to-screen that is hardware-accelerated in this case. With OpenGL direct rendering, Snes9x will make use of your PC's graphics hardware to render the SNES game image, ultimately making the process a lot faster."

  • Moved graphics code to separate plugin
  • Added VertexBuffer support to the graphics code, to take advantage of parallelism with the graphics hardware

  • Added Lkb's changes (up to Lkb-4.2)
  • Lots of code tidying (e.g. use of singleton classes etc)
  • Cleaned up debug logfile handling

fixo MIMIC showing signs of Megadrive emulation
(posted by fixo - 17:48)

The official page of MIMIC, the generic hardware emulator, was updated with the first screenshot ever of Sega Megadrive (Genesis) code in action and following notes:

"Here is the first pic of Mimic emulating the Sega Mega Drive !!! This is the BIOS, which only really displays this message. It then does a HUGE countdown. I dunno what happens when it finishes. All other carts are either hitting uncoded opcodes or waiting for interupts. The VDP code is a major bodge at the moment :). In order to get this far, I had to write some 16-bit memory handling routines which solved a lot of issues. Hopefully, I will be able to get something more exciting happening soon. Doing this made me reinstall Genecyst which (along with Callus) has the best GUI. I may have to poach some ideas and redesign the Mimic interface to be mouse driven :)"

fixo U64EMU2 Public Release Version 1.94a
    (posted by fixo - 13:44)

U64EMU2, the Killer Instinct 2 arcade emulator for Windows, was updated to v1.92a with following changes done by author rcp spending time bug-chasing thanks to the comments posted about the first public release of U64Emu with KI2 support a few days ago:

    • 3D stages were bad, no question. This release fixes that, and probably many other things as well.
    • The movies appear correct now (and at a different rate). It is possible that the *4* CPU core bugs that fixed number 1, also fixed this.
    • Several people have said some wild stuff about the intro. My guess is that their ROM dump doesn't match the HD image. Mine are correct (obviously), so I can say it works with ROM KI2 L1.1 I have noticed ppl talking about 1.4 and 1.5, which seem to me to be KI1 ROMs. I have no pity for them, as it is obvious that don't own the game.

  • fixo MIMIC WIP
    (posted by fixo - 10:57)

The homepage of MIMIC, the generic hardware emulators, was updated with the following Work In Progress news:

"A strange turn of events: on the day of the last release, I recieved an email directing me towards Sega 32X emulation (seeing as I have an SH2 core in development). Knowing that the 32X is just an add on for the Sega Mega Drive, I looked into SMD emulation :) WELL, NOW... the good old SMD uses a VDP very similar to that of the SMS. In fact it has an SMS mode and is a rather good way to develop a 68000 core to boot. So Sega Megadrive/Genesis emulation is next on my plate !!! I am redeveloping the 68000 core to use an array of function pointers rather than the faster (but harder to maintain/develop) embedded switch statements. I have a descent test suite of SMD carts that I will be using to develop with. So far, most carts are initialising RAM/VRAM and the Z80 before running into uncoded opcodes. Hopefully it won't be too long before I get some graphics being displayed. BTW: Mimic 1.09 was the smoothest release yet, with 0 requests for help. EXCELLENT!!! Also, this site has finnaly eclipsed the 100,000 hit mark at a rate of 202 hits a day and 8 hits per hour :)

    fixo PocketNES v0.4
    (posted by fixo - 11:58)

PocketNES is a Nintendo Entertaintment System (8-bit) emulator for Nintendo's latest handheld, the Gameboy Advance. Version 0.4 was released today and here are all the release notes:

Biggest improvement was a menu system that allows for multiple games to be put in one image. In this menu system many new options are enabled for each game. 3 Speed hacks, profiling, and follow character/memory are some of the options. These can help the games to run faster and to be more manageable on the small screen.

If you don't have the GBA hardware tools to this this one and fancy some double emulation, try this one out in GBA emu VisualBoyAdvance as it actually does work.

Frogacuda Farewell to a good freind.
    (posted by Frogacuda - 16:50)

2-D fighting gurus SNK, who has been struggling for some time, seem to be at their end. After the failure of it's latest system (the Neo Geo Pocket), being bought out by japan's largest gambling machine manufacturer, Aruze, and later filing for bankruptcy, much of the staff has defected to once-rival Capcom. Perhaps the hardest blow came today, when the court revoked the company's application for Rehabilitation Bankruptcy. This basically places SNK out-of-buisness with a 308,000,000 Yen debt. King of Fighters 2001 is still set to ship as planed, but future games seem to be in limbo. Our best hope at this point is that SNK's staff an liscenses will be able to stay together under a new corporate identity, or even as part of another company. 'Tis a sad day, indeed.

At least SNK will go out on a high note here in the US, when their finest work, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, hits shelves this November for the Sega Dreamcast.
