Roni Back to the Roots - Amiga News
(posted by Roni - 17:50)

A great site supporting the Amiga computers, and supporting legal free distribution of Amiga games and more has had an update. I feel it is best to quote the mail I received directly:

"More scene demos were added, and in the games section you'll find the game "Skidmarks" from Acid Software - a company who's now supporting our mission for offering classic Amiga games legally and for free. Included were also some extremely hard to find adventure games from Infocom plus other highlights of the Amiga games history.

"We're also happy to present you a review of the brilliant music CD "Merregnon". The music was composed by well known musicians like Chris Hülsbeck (Turrican), Allister Brimble (Superfrog), or Markus Holler (Tales of Tamar). We've done an interview with the Amiga demo group "Reason", too. Maybe you're interested to know how they see the demo scene on the AmigaOne.
"

Sounds like a good update to me, go check it out at the link below.

    (posted by Zoop - 14:38)

_Bnu has e-mailed us about an update he made to his site: the X68000 Games Pile. Covering both X68000 and PC98 Japanese systems, this site is one of the few english ressources of this kind on the net. This time, three PC98 games have been added: Custom Mate 1, 2 and 3. They are best described from Bjorn '_Bnu' Astrom words:

The Custom Mate series is a series of games where you choose the attributes that you like about a girl and then based on your desicions you get to try to charm a girl and get her into bed, basically. :) There are lots of combinations to try, but don't just try one game in the series, try 'em all! ;)

Generally speaking, X68000, PC88 (uncovered on this site) and PC98 are very nice machines that every gamers should try. Most currently famous Japanese games company started by making games for the PC88, and thus you can find many gems on them. Did you know that the recently released Silpheed for the Playstation 2 is a sequel to the very original one.. not on MegaCD, but PC88 - Check it out by yourself!.

PocketNES, and NES emu for various Palmtop computers. Here's what's new this time:

    • New logo and controller artwork.
    • Speed improvments. iPAQs average about 40 frames per second now! Even more with sound disabled. The MIPS version is faster, but it is still too slow to play most high action games.
    • Cutomized key configuration. This should make PocketNES fully compatible with all PocketPCs now. The new controller settings are under the Option menu
Rev 2 also brings some major speed improvements on top of those listed above. You can grab a copy at the new homepage.

Aldo, author of several popular PSX emulation tools for nearly every PSX emulator has released one of the handiest utilities seen in quite some time. Memory Card Manager 1.0 allows you to manage several memory card slots with a few simple clicks. And in case you missed it yesterday, he also released a VERY handy memory card converter that combines all his various tools into one simple to use prog. I've tested this extensively myself, and it works extremely well, allowing you to swap your VGS memory cards over to Bleem! or ePSXe & vice versa in just seconds. In addition to all this goodness, Aldo also released the 3rd edition of his VGS Video patch for FFIX, that allows this fantastic game to finally run under VGS. You can grab all these goodies here at his homepage.

Finally, the ePSXe Compatibility List hosted over at Psxemu.com continues to grow by leaps & bounds as the list now is up to 319! entries last I checked about 20 minutes ago. You can help out by submitting your results with any games you've tested out with ePSXe. Max Turrican 3 coming in April!
    (posted by Max - 11:57)

Two years ago we saw a promising preview of an up and coming C64 sequel to the amazing Turrican 2, and now after some hard coding and a different team, Turrican 3 is on its way, bigger, better and with a new team behind it... and boy, it looks good!

It was two years ago when Turrican 3 became known to be worked on. But due to its preview being spread too early, its coders decided to abandon the project... A big shame, the game looked and felt good.... very good. All was lost.... until now.....

Smash Designs have decided to do their own "Turrican 3" project, and bring us a game which could possibly surpass the incredible Turrican 2, without the assistance of Manfred Trenz this time. And wow, it really looks like Smash could pull it off.

So far what we have, is a massive preview of the first level, along with a cool looking introduction screen.

The game plays just like Turrican 2, with most of the weapons from that game... but the thing you will notice at the moment, is that the guns and weapons are a lot more jazzed up and powerful. The explosions are more convincing, and the main sprite looks a little better. Otherwise, the game is basically Turrican 2 at the moment.... little difference in map style or anything like that....

But this demo is only a very slight insight of the finished game.... Turrican 3 will be featuring better weapons, bigger bosses, new style levels, a cool sideways SEU later in the game, better enemy intelligence, and some stunning music and sound effects in the game (The first Turrican game to feature music on the platform areas). But there is a lot more which will feature in the game, along with about 5 worlds to explore.

If Smash Designs can implement this game like they do with their demo's, then we are onto a winner here.... a BIG winner. With what looks like a massive release on the C64 for many a year.

There maybe bugs in this demo, but there won't be in the final game... and it is gonna rock!

The release date is planned to be well into 2001, estimated to be around March/April. Smash Designs said that its to make sure that plenty of effort is put into the game, and not just release a final rushed version. The actual selling/distribution of this game is unknown but will be released soon.

I'd like to christen my return with some news regarding two excellent support sites for the hands down best PSX emulator, ePSXe. The first is ePSXe Fanatics, headed up by Wormie, and the second is a fan page hosted over at Psxemu.com that can be reached Here. Both offer helpful compatability lists, as well as screenshots, messageboards & of course downloads for the various plug-ins for ePSXe. You can help both sites out by submitting your results with any games that you've tested with the awesome emu. Also, on the Psxemu message boards, Galtor, one of the authors of ePSXe stated that a new release should be seen before X-Mas, with better support for MDECs and according to Bobbi of Psxemu.com, with FFIX no longer locking up at the first battle!.

    (posted by Frogacuda - 17:50)

I thought I should fill you in on the whole Famicommunist situation, since I know a little more than what has been publicized. CyberBry is claiming that upon arriving home he fiund his harddrive completely unusable and all sources destroyed, and CyberBry has gone into hiding as a result. To most this will sound like "the dog ate my sources", and in all objectivity they would probably be right. Most evidence does indicate that FCommie was a rip. The only one who can prove otherwise now is CyberBry. I am still perplexed as to why somone who is capable of writing a real NES would write a fake one. Cyber has told me that he is considering starting over and writing his own core, and hopefully he will do so, and will be redeemed, but right now it seems that Famicommunist is no more. We have taken down the page until Cyber decides to step up once again. It was fun while it lasted.

  • Boosted Sega CD compatibility, but not by nearly as much as predicted from preliminary testing. :'(
  • Eliminated need for preformatted Sega CD internal BRM. AGES will automatically format it if the file is not present. If the file is present and is somehow corrupted, you will have to delete it or use the BIOS to re-format it.
  • Added error message suppression (for instance the UnRAR.DLL error)
  • Made file filters dynamic (.RAR is not shown anymore if UnRAR.DLL is not found)

    Frogacuda FE goes Communist
    (posted by Frogacuda - 18:39)

This is a weird one, folks. The NES emulator FE has apparently gone communist, or at least the homepage has. I'm not really sure what the meaning of this is, but it almost certainly relates to the recently released Famicommunist which has come under fire for it's use of Nester source code. Could this be a sign of support? Judge for yourself at the link below.

    Frogacuda Nester vs. Famicommunist
    (posted by Frogacuda - 20:57)

Nester has sent out some scathing accusations against the newly launched NES emu Famicommunist saying it is nothing more than a source rip. CyberBry, the author of FCommie has responded, sayng the accusations are completely false. Basically here is the score as best I can decipher:

Famicommunist's release was rushed and it was uploaded with very preliminary docs which did not cite cores uses/docs consulted (or much of anything else for that matter). CyberBry does admit, that he used a minimal amout of blitting (screen drawing) code from NESter, but nothing else. He has apologized for this confusion, and uploaded a zip with complete documentation. Another factor contributing to the confusion is that both Famicommunist and Nester share SPU and Sound cores (but these are not the property of Nester). The emu will be open sourced tomorrow when CyberBry gets home to prove it's validity. I urge everyone not to jump to any conclusions until tomorrow.

    Frogacuda Famicommunist 1.0
    (posted by Frogacuda - 14:26)

In light of the recent election confusion it has become apparent that Democracy just doesn't work. Welcome Communism into your life. Famicommunist is a brand new NES emu for Windows from the author of the DOS NES emu RADARnes (which is defunct as of this release). I've been given the chance to play with various betas of this emu over the last week and a half, and I must say I've found myself using it quite alot. It has good sound, stable speed, quick savestates, and a nice simple gui. Here's the features breakdown:

    • Vertical/Horizontal Scrolling
    • Very nice Pallete
    • Sound
    • Fullscreen, Doublescreen, and Window mode
    • Mapper supports for mappers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 15, 43(partial), 114(small portion), and 199 (partial)
    • Frameskip(auto)/Framelimiter
    • Savestates 1-10
    • Configurable controls
I'd like to point out that this is a very strong showing for a first release, with 2 previously unemulated mappers, and all the standard features. It is already one of the better Windows NES emus, and I don't doubt that before long it will become a major player. This is one to watch for.

Yape (Commodore Plus4 emu) now has some cool new features, one being the C64 TAP format! This is a world first for the C16/Plus4 fans and some time soon C16/Plus4 ClassiX will also have a whole bunch of Tap files to try out! New features in Yape are:

    • exact TED timings at last, including "correct" color and character buffering (this actually broke some already working games...)
    • MTAP support, the same tape format that is used in CCS64 and VICE, is now supported! (you should even be able to save/load to/from external TAP files now! Turboloaders also work)
    • timers are now decreased in every second TED clock cycle only...
    • preliminary SID emulation (courtesy of Csabo)
    • full ROM banking via dialog window
    • reorganised menubar
    • you can now load/save user settings and they are reloaded at startup (yape.ini)
    • screen is now centered in all full screen DirectX modes
    • modified the redistribution package to contain one of all supported image types
    • various small fixes
For me, being able to load Real C16/Plus4 tape images into an emulator is the dog`s! Also big thanks goto Markus Brenner author of Mtap for making this format possible. As ever head on over the the Yape homepage and pop back to check out Markus Brenner`s cool Mtap homepage!

I am currently trying to find the Space King 2 ROMset that Team Japump just dumped so I can give a shot at adding it to Laser. Space King is already supported by Laser, and as far as I know, Space King 2 uses the same hardware, so it shouldn't be that hard to add. If you have this ROMset, please contact me.

In other news - I have managed to get the game Lupin II to be fully playable - and I have made more progress in making the semi-supported games more playable: Boot Hill now runs without the characters on screen. I have also added preliminary support for Clowns.

I will release another version of Laser as soon as I get the Space King 2 Romset - which hopefully should be soon.

    Frogacuda ZSNES 1.10
    (posted by Frogacuda - 19:20)

Well we're back, and so is ZSNES! We have a brand spankin new update of the legendary DOS/Windows SNES emu. Here's what's new:

    • Fixed games that turns on the x239 resolution (eg. Chrono Trigger battles) when scanline mode is enabled
    • (Win32) Fixed up crashing bugs on extra long filenames with underscores
    • (Win32) Hopefully fixed the odd colored interpolation in 1:5:5:5 16bit color settings
    • (Win32) Hopefully won't crash anymore when the temporary directory exists prior to unzipping a .zip file
    • (Win32) Fixed loading of .zip files with more than 2 '.'s in the filename. Thanks to DCX for helping us troubleshoot this.
    • (Win32) Fixed up short filename saveram/save states loading when the long filename has spaces in it.
    • Added TCP/IP Support. It is recommended that for playable netplay, you'd have an average ping time of less than 300ms (type ping in dos) and that packet loss is minimal for TCP/IP (not UDP). At the moment, you cannot have more than 2 connections
Thanks for all the testers for testing this, especially DooMStalK, GreenImp, and TeleKawaru! Also added back buffer support. This will sacrifice cpu power for netplay to make it much more playable. WARNING: High cpu speed recommendations (~450mhz+). Please see netplay.txt for details.
    • Added save states to netplay (just use them like you normally do)
    • Save Ram is now defaulted to load/save on the server's side
    • Save Ram are not supported in SA-1/SuperFX games due to their size, but you can use save states instead in that case.
    • Increased chat line length in the out-of-game chatbox by a lot
    • Partly increased the chat line length in-game
    • in-game chat text now stays longer on-screen by 2 seconds
    • Added reset in netplay
    • Fixed up movie recording feature
    • (Win32) Mouse shouldn't get stuck on the left side anymore.
    • (Win32) Video mode 3 (256x224FS) shouldn't crash anymore. Thanks to kode54 for his assistance on the above 2 bugfixes.
    • (Win32) Fixed the instability bug where the window can sometimes start shaking for no reason and takes away windows resources.
    • (Win32) Re-wrote keyboard character input routines
    • Fixed up FF2(4)'s music in lower sampling rates
    • (Win32) Coded in the UDP protocol as a replacement for TCP/IP.
Some network configurations won't work with UDP. However, it is strongly recommended that you use UDP if you can because of the speed increase. In order to disable UDP and use TCP/IP, both sides must de-select UDP.
    • (Win32) Added a small multiplayer game list (multi.txt)
    • Added an updated Windows FAQ, courtesy of TuxedoMsk of VGNetwork who updated it.
    • Added a more user friendly input selection routine (changed Direct Input to Keyb/Joystick and it also auto-sets keyb/Joystick when you set a key)
    • Hopefully fixed up the sprite priority problems (eg. FF2/4's damage points)
    • (Win32) Added rewind support for up to 8 levels (in 8 second intervals) (NOTE: Windows Port only! - Sorry DOS Port users). In order to activate this, assign a key to the Rewind Key in the Misc -> GameKeys option.
You can download version 1.10 for DOS and Windows now at the ZSNES homepage.

    DeadBody Some words from Delta
    (posted by DeadBody - 22:12)

Delta, one of the creators of Pretendo, has let me know some important things. Here is a quote of what he said:

"Hey all. Short update regarding Pretendo related things. I had meant to update the site with a real news update last night, but to my surprise, someone, or something decided to remove the entire contents of the /cgi-bin. As a result, the site looks quite poopy, and there's no way I can do news updates until the problem was resolved. Basically, the whole site was powered by a bunch of Perl scripts I wrote. They're now useless, so as is the site. Anyways, the post was to contain some information regarding Pretendo, nescience, and PrOxY's Fakestation. As for Pretendo, I picked out a silly slowdown. I now have the renderer decode a tile-line at once, instead of going one pixel at a time, so things are somewhat quicker now. As for PrOxY's Fakestation, it now shows the BIOS screen! So we know that he's progressing very well. I'll ask PrOxY to get a screenshot up sometime. Okay, final stretch of my rambling. I've been devoting a bunch of my free time towards working on nescience. The GUI is nearly finished. You can see a WIP screenshot at: http://www.pretendo.org/~delta/nescience_gui_wip.jpg It's only WIP though, so don't expect the works. I pulled the CPU Interface right out of the Pretendo codebase, and with a few minor modifications, it will be up and running. Basically, what this all means is that I will soon be able to focus on the new sound core! I'll upload a sourcedrop sometime next week, hopefully. Okay, I think that about covers it. Hopefully I can get the CGI problems fixed soon, and the site will be functional again. It's in the hands of xo now, so we'll have to wait it out."

    fixo HydraHLE project

One of the most famous emulators ever, the Nintendo64 emulator for Windows called UltraHLE, seems to be a hot topic these days. A few weeks ago there was the first "hack" update called Supra HLE. Another one seems to be in the works now. HydraHLE is the name of the project and here's what the man behind it says:

"HydraHLE is basically just a hacked/patched version of the famous UltraHLE emulator. It has the potential to emulate new games that before weren't possible to emulate. Of course this support hasn't been implemented yet because it is still in early beta stage. The first release is already out but it is still a beta. It has various speed, graphics, and sound hacks for some games but I wont have a list of changes until the first full version release in a few month's. The version that is being distrubuted is currently for beta purposes only and I am allowing everyone to be beta testers."

    • Added in-game stereo sound. Previous version had mono only
    • PAL support
    • Verical offset of non-VGA screens fixed
    • Double buffering
    • Up to 1024 ROMs per CD supported
    • Music added on the menu screens

fixo Snes9x news and v1.33a release
    (posted by fixo - 07:10)

Just before the weekend, a new release of Snes9x was made available. This Super Nintendo emulator for multiple platforms is up to v1.33 now for both Windows and Linux and here are some changes:

    • Fixed asm CPU_SHUTDOWN code that I accidentally broke while trying to optimise it! Thanks to all the people who noticed Snes9x's frame skipping had changed between releases. Frames rates should be improved again for more than 50% of games.
    • Re-enabled in-lining of the C SNES memory access routines, improves frame rate by one or two on slower machines.
    • Optimised the asm 65c816 addressing mode emulation code.
    • ........
There's really too many updates in this release (sometimes games specific) too all sum up, head over to the official page linked below for the full list and download. Note however though that in this new release, it seems that Super FX emulation was broken while adding C4 emulation. The team is investigating this as we speak and expect a new release soon.

Set to revolutionize the SMS scene :P". Also implemented is a screenshot feature to the emulator of which some results can be viewed on it's homepage linked below.

    Zoop System-E emulator
    (posted by Zoop - 18:47)

The Mimic homepage has been updated concerning a Sega System-E driver in the work. This rare system that has been around in 1985/1986 is based on the Master System and features games such as Hang On Jr, Transformer, Fantasy Zone 2, Opa Opa, the two last being apparently encrypted :(

Digging up old pictures of mine (21 november 1999):

If someone want to convert that piece of crap code into a MAME drivers and finish it, well.. tell me. In any case I think we can expect some kind of running emulation in Mimic in a bit of time.

    fixo OverClocked turns 1!
    (posted by fixo - 12:11)

The famous online comic strip OverClocked, dealing with two weird guys and emulation, is exactly 1 year old today. A new episode have been posted (#134 already) and though in the last months there haven't been as many release as before, here's what author David says about it's creation:

"At this point in time, to many, the future of OC might seem in jeopardy - there haven't been nearly as many updates as there should have been. Enjoy this latest episode, take a review back through the older ones, and stick with me, 'cause this boat is still afloat and will remain that way for a good time to come!!"
One year of great OC comics so far and let's hope it will stay here forever, just like emulation itself!
