New NES Emulator
(posted by ZeroAge - 23:34)

BudFrEaK has released a new NES emulator called Aphrodite. It's not very advanced yet, it only emulates fully mappers 0, 2 and 3, and the sound is not quite good. I hope this one gets better soon. For more info go to Beyond Emulation.

New sites joigning Emucamp!
(posted by Zoop - 17:56)

Two cool sites joigned the Emucamp network today: these are Simply Nes and JAG's Video Game Zone.
The first deal exclusively with the Nintendo first 8-bit system and features a lot of informations about peripheral and games as well as pictures of weird/pirate/prototypes items. Being still in "new layout state", you will probably find broken links but the content under the working ones will surely keep you busy until the rest is online :)
Back on the second site, JAG's Video Game Zone. It covers both Nintendo 8-bit and Sega Master System and provides a bunch of stuff about them from advertisements pictures to game reviews, not mentionning the available music extracts.

Student arrested in Japan!
(posted by Zoop - 17:30)

Asia BizTech wrote an article about a 21-year-old Japanese student who has been recently accused of distributing NES and Gameboy ROM images on the internet. This is at my knowledge the first case of this kind, and unfortunately it may cause problem to the Japanese emulation scene, with is already a bit paranoid about the legal aspects of emulation. Not a good news in any case, and I suggest reading the article linked below.

Along with the other items, the OS/2 port of MAME has been brought to sync with the current version. Here's what's new:

o Updated to MAME core version .36 beta 10
o PONG is available to everybody!!!!!
o Fixed a stupid, STUPID, bug causing a crash when the ROM search path is changed
o Changed the DIVE initialization code slightly to (hopefully) work better with some ThinkPads
o Fixed a bug that caused changes in the joystick settings to not immediately take effect in the middle of a game.
o Fixed a bug causing games with looped samples (like Galaxian) to stop playing the samples when the game is unpaused.
o Got rid of a few ugly error messages in the Debug.Log when the game is paused and sound is enabled.
o Tweaked the Quick List dialog screen to give the window focus to the
o Favorites list by default
o Fixed the startup sequence when using a game name as a command line parameter so that the loading status screen gets the window focus while it is loading

The EmuDX Website has been updated with some information. Quoted from Darkmazda's Domain:

"There should also be an assortment of sound card options (for people with sblive in particular). There's also other stuff that is still in progress. I'm looking into what other games can be included easily now that the program structure has changed total ly, giving us the ability to plug new games in, or at least better than before. If things go well, such as the pengo/phoenix graphics, then I want to get the first big EmuDX release in, along with the screensaver and theme for Windows before Christmas, bu t all that really relies on the availability of the improved graphics & sound in time. If this is not the case, it won't be available until after the new year."

in 2002. You have to wonder if the report takes into account such successes as webTV or Sega's current online gaming library.

Nintendo not happy to rest on its Pokemon laurels, decided to issue a Donkey Kong "collectible card series." Fastest Gaming News mentions a partner in crime by the name of Ahomaro games.

Billy Mitchell and Twin Galaxies are offering $195,000 for record breaking scores on sixteen classic arcade games. The big prize of $100,000 is for
anyone who can beat the 256th Pacman level without losing their quarter.

Bandai, manufacturer of a handheld called the Wonderswan, acquired rights to Squaresoft titles for their handheld. Expect to see a Wonderswan Final Fantasy version in late 2000. GameSpot News has additional details concerning the Wonderswan and other Wonderswan titles.

The Overclocked Wars (Continued)
(posted by uzplayer - 14:31)

Quoted from Retrogames:

"Arcade@home has been shut down until the maintainer receives an apology from OverClocked's Lloyd. This is no great loss in my opinion; ArcadeAtHome's maintainer is responsible for many of the license restrictions in MAME. I'd like to urge Lloyd to stand his ground. UPDATE - it seems ArcadeAtHome is back. Oh well, maybe next time. (Update by atila - Tim Eckel has added *.retrogames.com to his "banlist", if you will. If you click on a link to his site and *.retrogames.com is the referrer URL, you wll see t he above message. If you just type his URL in your address bar, you can reach his site. All I can say is: not nice)"

Gee. Who do you think is gonna win this one? Emucamp backs up David Lloyd and Retrogames on this one 100%. He shouldnt have done this crap in the first place. If one person can ban *.retrogames.com, then I think a thousand people can boycott the site. So I call for a boycott of www.arcadeathome.com until this war is over.

Allowing Dreamcast gamers to use their controllers and VMU's at the arcade, Capcom's Spawn: In The Demon's Hand accomplishs arcade and console integration on the next level; alt hough, not to be confused with Sega's pipe-dream of Dreamcast gamers playing against arcade gamers via a network connection. MacMAME V0.36 beta 11
Brad Oliver has released a new version of MacMAME, catching up with the DOS version released on Sunday. In additional to all the changes found in the DOS release, the Mac version has these specific changes:

- In sync with DOS beta 11. [Brad Oliver]
- Fixed problems with the listbox highlight ring drawing improperly under MacOS 9. [John Butler]
- Added support for playing a splash movie at startup. MacMAME will look for a movie called "MacMAME.mov" and will use it if found.
We recommend the movie by Dave Dries which has been circulating around the 'net as it was specifically designed for this. [John Butler]
- Added some fixes for RAVE mode when using 16-bit video. [Brad Oliver]
- Many changes to the code to make it Carbon-compliant. There are still pieces which won't work under Carbon,
but the bulk of what can be changed at this time has been. [John Butler, Brad Oliver]
- Added NSC805 PPC CPU core based off the 6800 core. [Aaron Giles]

NesToy 2.4b released
(posted by Opi - 04:44)

Digitxin released another version of his great NES utility. New in this version :
- Added a (-nobackup) option to suppress the creaton of backups when ROMs are repaired or resized.
- NesToy can now resize some ROMs that are too small, but just need to be padded with empty space to repair them.
- Fixed a bug where under certain circumstances, NesToy would be unable to perform a rename on ROMs if the were already sorted into the directories defined in nestoy.cfg.
- Implemented a work-around to prevent NesToy from scanning the same ROM twice when (-sub) is used. This caused NesToy to think the ROM was a duplicate and
move it to the duplicates directory.
- NesToy will now always skip over the duplicate and backup directories in a scan unless they are specified directly on the command line. This is not recommended.
- All internal directory handling routines have been rewritten. Make sure to report any bugs or inconsistancies no matter how minor.
- The backup directory can now be changed in nestoy.cfg. Either delete nestoy.cfg and let it create a new one, or manually add the new entries.
- Raised internal directory limit to 100 directories.
- Small change in sorting routines. ROMs with titles like "Dragon Warrior.nes" will now show up in the listings before "Dragon Warrior 2.nes."

Classicgaming.com's game of the week is Pharoahs Curse for the Atari 800 Computer. Taken from the review:

"Pharaoh's Curse is a platform-style game. Basically, you're an Indiana Jones-type character who's trying to reclaim (read: steal) the pharaoh's lost treasures that are trapped inside of his tomb. But wouldn't you know it, the pharaoh has rigged his tomb with killer sock puppets (at least that's what they look like) and will sometimes attack you directly or with the aid of his hench-mummy. It was so good that it was somewhat-imitated by Apogee's Pharaoh's Tomb; in fact, one of the episodes of Pharaoh's To mb was named -- surprise, surprise -- Pharaoh's Curse."

    MAME
    (posted by uzplayer - 09:55)

    - XMAME -
A new version of XMAME (*nix port of MAME) has been released. Apparently the list of what's new is big. Here's a snippet:

o Fixed the x86-asm m68000 cpu core compile problems.
o Fixed problems with mess emulations which use r/w disk images, note that these don't support gzipped or zipped images.
o Fixed possible bufferoveruns with very long rompaths in fileio.c. This was never a security risk since xmame drops root rights before doing any fileio.
o This also changed the behaviour of -rompath it now longer adds a path to the rompath but instead replaces the entire rompath.
o Fixed problems with -verifyroms failing on zippedroms with the wrong names but right checksums, while playing the game works fine.
o Added virtual root support to the -run-in-root-window option, now xmame can be used as a part of xscreensaver ;)
o Wrote a little script to run a random game in the root window for 2 minutes and then run another random game etc. Use this as the extern command for xscreensaver, it is in contrib/tools/xmame-screensaver .
    Usage:
o compile the x11 version of xmame
o install it somewhere in your path
    o copy xmame-screensaver to /usr/games
    o edit ~/.xscreensaver , and add a line: /usr/games/xmame-screensaver

This build also includes an update of MESS for Unix to the latest core release. Click here to get it. Thanks to EmuHQ for the information.

    - OptiMAME -
This is another MAME build where the goal is to hook up authentic arcade controls. This version already has compatibility for certain arcade optical controllers such as 360 degree wheels. Cl ick here to get it. Once again, thanks to EmuHQ for the info.

Meka 0.31 RC1 - Beta testers got the next update
    (posted by Opi - 05:07)

Read what's new in Meka 0.31 Release Candiate 1 [Changes since 0.31 Beta]
    - Updated Colecovision support (finally):
    - Improved keypad emulation. Mapped # and * keys on the keyboard. Their corresponding keys are minus and equals, next to the 0.
    - Fixed garbage sound on the beginning of some games.
    - Improved interrupt emulation.
    - Fixed joypad emulation in some cases.
    - Added Colecovision picture in the graphical user interface.
    - Fixed bad game screen size in GUI in certain cases.
    - Slighty improved dynamic palette system, fixing Moldorian and other games. An error message will still appear in these cases, until a better fix could be applied.

In case you don't know what Meka is, it's the best Sega 8 bit emulator (my opinion), with an high compatible Coleco Vision emu included, programmed by Zoop the founder of Emucamp and head of SMS Power . Visit the Meka homepage to get the last official release. Please register your version to support the author and his efforts.

    Review
    (posted by lilac - 21:27)

For those of you who haven't tried the new Final Fantasy VIII Demo for PC, here's some things to think about while downloading it (67 megabytes takes quite awhile).
First, Squaresoft decided to give Eidos the boot and hired Electronic Arts to take care of the port, which was a great move considering the port of chapter VIII is better in many ways than the port of VII. Minimum requirements are a Pentium-level 233 and 4 megabytes RAM video card without hardware acceleration or a 200 megahertz chip and good 8 megabyte or more video card. This is quite modest by today's standards. Basically if you can play FFVII PC you can do FFVII as well. Please note that ATI rage and S3 ViRGE boards will NOT run this demo, but are expected to run the final when it is released.
In addition, the new game requires DirectX 6.1 or higher and takes better advantage of the new API than the crude FF7 engine. All movies play at a larger resolution than FF7. The large use of texture mapping makes having an AGP card advantageous though. L ighting effects are unfortunely crude just like the PSX version (circular shadows). Some other nice improvements since FF7 have been player customizable remapping of keyboard keys, joystick support, and the ability to turn off effects like fog for slower machines.
Although the game is expected to ship in January I don't think this will be the case as I noted several phrases referring to Playstation controls such as "Memory Card" that should be changed to PC equivalents. The absence of a true exit command on the men u (Alt-F4 is the ONLY way to quit) is distracting as well. My biggest peeve though was that text was displayed at 300x240 resolution, making it look blocky and difficult to read at 640x480 fullscreen resolution. If PC screens had scanlines it would probab ly look ok but its ugly the way it is and hopefully it gets fixed or at least antialiased before the final version arrives next year. Also, those of you who used to watch the movies off the CD in FF7 will not be able to in FF8 - the movies are now compres sed into an archived form.
I've recently been playing FF7 on my Athlon 550, 128 MB PC133 RAM, and Voodoo3 3500 and noticed it stall for a split second on occasion but have yet to see any such tardiness from FF8. (I realize this is a high-end PC and I'd test FF8 on my Pentium 233MMX if I could but it uses an ATI video card. Sorry!)
