Story
(From Instruction Manual)
Step into the shadows of the deadliest dwelling on earth. You've arrived at Castlevania, and you're here on business: to destroy forever the Curse of the Evil Count. Unfortunately, everybody's home this evening. Bats, ghosts, every kind of creature you can imagine. You'll find 'em all over the place, if they don't find you first.

Because you've got to get through six monstrous floors before you even meet up with the Master of the House, your Magic Whip will help, and you'll probably find a weapon or two along the way. Once you make it to the tower, you can count on a Duel to the Death. The Count has waited 100 years for a rematch. He's ready. Are you?

Main Characters
Simon Belmont
The Count
A whip-swinging vampire hunter out to destroy The Count and his evil minions.
It's been 100 years since The Count's last reign of terror, and now he wants to do it again.

JAG's Review
ho new way back in 1987 when this game was released for the NES that Castlevania would evolve into one of the biggest franchises in the entire video game industry? Sure, Castlevania games were popular from the start, but I would not have predicted that the series would have gotten so huge. Thank goodness it did, though, as several games in the Castlevania series are in my list of all time greats.

The reasons this particular Castlevania episode for the NES is so good are (1) it has good, solid control, (2) the Gothic graphics were done very nicely, and (3) some of the musical tracks plain out rock. Anyone who has followed the Castlevania series knows that one of its strong points has always been the music, and this version certainly does not disappoint.

Inexperienced vampire hunters beware, the challenge in Castlevania is very high. You'll need to know how to use the different weapons available to you, especially when fighting against a boss. Try saving up your hearts for the bosses, so you'll have plenty of chances left to use your alternate weapons against them. I have found that the best alternate weapon for fighting bosses is the boomerang (a.k.a. the cross), especially for the later levels.
