Ninja Gaiden
Reviewed by Ashley on December 13th, 1998

If your a fan of the Ninja Gaiden series or of arcade games in general you have to try this game! Its very different from the others in its series but it holds its own as an excellent scrolling fighter.

You have a variety of moves, the basic 3 hit combo of a hook punch, a high roundhouse kick, and a jumping roundhouse style kick, and my favorite the ability to grab your enemy while jumping over them and flip them and they can be thrown through objects such as phone booths etc., along with power ups such as the sword powerup which allows you to whip that ninja-to off your back and slice em up, and in areas that arent self scrolling if you hold up and jump you can jump strait up which is necessary to pass the casino level you have to jump strait up and then grab the bar.

Along with moves such as those you also have some acrobatic ability such as the standard flip jump, the ability to walk to a wall or object and run up it briefly and flip over backwards (like in the mk movie), and grabbing onto bars and kicking in two directions from there or flipping upward to walk on them or grappling along the bottom of them.

Fans of the NES series may notice there are no cinema plot scenes in this version, however there is a very awesome intro and between levels it does have screens that are mainly comical (see below) a different one for each level, but the ending does leave alot to be desired.

The game does feature some very good graphics in some areas of the game especially for a 1988 game especially in the intro and the music is great too especially in the final level (in my opinion).

And you cant forget the famous game over screen with the sawblade! Ryu shakes frantically and when time runs out you hear a scream and the screen fades to red.

And last but not least the enemies. They range from jason wannabes to masked wierdos to fat punks with sticks, sumo wrestlers, wrestlers, midgets with claws, enemy ninjas, tons more plus its fun jumping into a slew of 10 bad guys and winning without dying.

The bosses tend to be a bit too easy but in the last level you have to fight them all over again and then another final boss the best thing is they all have several moves some are even funny to watch and the bosses are normally huge.

So to sum it up i HIGHLY recomend this game! Its always been my personal favorite i even owned the machine at one time it is currently working in raine and mame (i suggest mame because it now has the asm 68k core and it has full sound though the music is slightly wrong but its nothing bad) and enjoy it!
