Donkey Kong Reviewed by Feesh on January 1st, 1999 |

Ah, good old Donkey Kong. The original game certainly was a classic in anyone's books.
But now Nintendo have decided it's time for D.K to return. Some may call it a cash-in, others a remake. I'd call it one of the most addictive games to be produced for the Game Boy. But that's just me.

Admittedly, it does start off in a retro fashion (but isn't that a bonus?). 4 levels ripped straight from the original game. And then it gets fun.

Donkey Kong grabs poor Pauline and dashes off into the Big City, through planes, boats, jungles and deserts, Mario has to catch up to him in order to win back his love.

In each level, there is a key and a door. You have to connect the former to the latter in order to escape. There's trees, vines, crocodiles, spikes and a whole load of other nasties to block his path.
However, our Mazza has become rather an acrobatic bloke. He can swing, backflip, roll and leap his way across all terrain. Once you master all his movements, moving Mario becomes quite artistic, as he pirouettes all over the platforms.

And what platforms they are! If you're part of the Sonic The Hedgehog generation of platform fans, stay away. Speed is not he key word here. You have to think before you leap. It's certainly more of a puzzler-platformer than anything else.

With more than 100 levels - with an excellent difficulty curve - this game
will last. Battery Back-up gives the player some chance of completing Mario's
quest. It's an addictive, pick-up-and-play sort of game that works so
beautifully on the Game Boy. If you own one - get it.
