Y's: the Vanished Omens
Reviewed by Shion on April 26th, 1998

Of a popular RPG series the world over and one of the most famous ever in Japan, where anime videos, soundtrack CD's, and even comic books have been released, the first Y's game was released for Sega Master System in 1988. And it is one of the most enjoyable SMS titles I've played.

It's a typical "save-the-kingdom" action role-playing game, where young adventurer Aron (known as Adol Christian in most other versions) is asked by Sara the Seer to find and retrieve the sacred books of Y's, to call down the goddesses of the land that once protected the good people from the totally disgusting creatures that are once again posing a serious threat.

Y's: The Vanished Omens sports lovely, detailed graphics. Sprites are small, but at least they actually move around, unlike in Phantasy Star where all but the characters you control don't, except in battle.

One of the highlights of this game would have to be the music. Probably the best Master System game in that respect (in my opinion anyway), it is fantastic, and gives the game an atmosphere unmatched by most other games on the system.

Kudos go to the deep storyline, and there is little wrong with the gameplay other than the slightly fiddly combat, where to attack your enemies you just run into them. It is annoying at first but you do get the hang of it eventually.

Overall, this is a fabulous Sega title and one of the best RPG's available for the Master System, second only to Phantasy Star in my opinion. So check it out, it's well worth grabbing for hours of quality playing time!
